वर्तमान भारत में असमानता को समझने और उससे निपटने के लिए, अरुंधति रॉय ज़ोर दे कर कहती हैं कि हमें राजनीतिक विकास और एम.के. गांधी का प्रभाव, दोनों का ही परीक्षण करना होगा। सोचना होगा कि क्यों बी.आर. आंबेडकर द्वारा गांधी की लगभग दैवीय छवि को दी गई प्रबुद्ध चुनौती को भारत के कुलीन वर्ग द्वारा दबा दिया गया। राय के विश्लेषण में, हम देखते हैं कि न्याय के लिए आंबेडकर की लड़ाई, जाति को सुदृढ़ करनेवाली नीतियों के पक्ष में, व्यवस्थित रूप से दरकिनार कर दी गई, जिसका परिणाम है वर्तमान भारतीय राष्ट्र जो आज ब्रिटिश शासन से स्वतंत्र है, विश्वस्तर पर शक्तिशाली है, लेकिन आज भी जो जाति व्यवस्था में आकंठ डूबा है।

अपने जनवादी सरोकारों और ठोस तथ्यपरक तार्किक गद्य के बल पर अरुन्धति रॉय ने आज एक प्रखर चिन्तक और सक्रिय सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता के रूप में अपना ख़ास मुक़ाम हासिल कर लिया है। उनके सरोकारों का अन्दाज़ा उनके चर्चित उपन्यास, ‘मामूली चीज़ों का देवता’ ही से होने लगा था, लेकिन इसे उनकी सामाजिक प्रतिबद्धता की निशानी ही माना जाएगा कि अपने विचारों और सरोकारों को और व्यापक रूप से अभिव्यक्त करने के लिए, अरुन्धति रॉय ने अपने पाठकों की उम्मीदों को झुठलाते हुए, कथा की विधा का नहीं, बल्कि वैचारिक गद्य का माध्यम चुना और चूँकि वे स्वानुभूत सत्य पर विश्वास करती हैं, उन्होंने न सिर्फ़ नर्मदा आन्दोलन के बारे में अत्यन्त विचारोत्तेजक लेख प्रकाशित किया, बल्कि उस आन्दोलन में सक्रिय तौर पर शिरकत भी की। यही सिलसिला आगे परमाणु प्रसंग, अमरीका की एकाधिपत्यवादी नीतियों और ऐसे ही दूसरे ज्वलन्त विषयों पर लिखे गए लेखों की शक्ल में सामने आया।
‘कठघरे में लोकतंत्र’ इसी सिलसिले की अगली कड़ी है। इस पुस्तक में संकलित लेखों में अरुन्धति रॉय ने आम जनता पर राज्य-तंत्र के दमन और उत्पीड़न का जायज़ा लिया है, चाहे वह हिन्दुस्तान में हो या तुर्की में या फिर अमरीका में। जैसा कि इस किताब के शीर्षक से साफ़ है, ये सारे लेख ऐसी तमाम कार्रवाइयों पर सवाल उठाते हैं जिनके चलते लोकतंत्र–यानी जनता द्वारा जनता के लिए जनता का शासन–मुट्ठी-भर सत्ताधारियों का बँधुआ बन जाता है।
अपनी बेबाक मगर तार्किक शैली में अरुन्धति रॉय ने तीखे और ज़रूरी सवाल उठाए हैं, जो नए विचारों ही को नहीं, नई सक्रियता को भी प्रेरित करेंगे। और यह सच्चे लोकतंत्र के प्रति अरुन्धति की अडिग निष्ठा का सबूत हैं।

किसी लेखक की दुनिया कितनी विशाल हो सकती है, इस संग्रह के लेखों से उसे समझा जा सकता है। ये लेख विशेषकर तीसरी दुनिया के समाज में एक लेखक की भूमिका का भी मानदंड कहे जा सकते हैं। अरुंधति रॉय भारतीय अंग्रेजी की उन विरल लेखकों में से हैं जिनका सारा रचनाकर्म अपने सामाजिक सरोकार से उपजा है। इन लेखों को पढ़ते हुए जो बात उभरकर आती है, वह यह कि वही लेखक वैश्विक दृष्टिवाला हो सकता है जिसकी जड़ें अपने समाज में हों। यही वह स्रोत है जो किसी लेखक की आवाज को मजबूती देता है और नैतिक बल से पुष्ट करता है। क्या यह अकारण है कि जिस दृढ़ता से मध्य प्रदेश के आदिवासियों के हक में हम अरुंधति की आवाज सुन सकते हैं, उसी बुलन्दी से वह रेड इंडियनों या आस्ट्रेलिया के आदिवासियों के पक्ष में भी सुनी जा सकती है। तात्पर्य यह है कि परमाणु बम हो या बोध का मसला, अफगानिस्तान हो या इराक, जब वह अपनी बात कह रही होती हैं, उसे अनसुना-अनदेखा नहीं किया जा सकता। वह ऐसी विश्व-मानव हैं जिसकी प्रतिबद्धता संस्कृति, धर्म, सम्प्रदाय, राष्ट्र और भूगोल की सीमाओं को लाँघती नजर आती है। ये लेख भारतीय सत्ता प्रतिष्ठान से लेकर सर्वशक्तिमान अमरीकी सत्ता प्रतिष्ठान तक के निहित स्वार्थों और क्रिया-कलापों पर समान ताकत से आक्रमण करते हुए उनके जन विरोधी कार्यों को उद्घाटित कर असली चेहरे को हमारे सामने रख देते हैं। एक रचनात्मक लेखक के चुटीलेपन, संवेदनशीलता, सघनता व दृष्टि-सम्पन्नता के अलावा इन लेखों में पत्रकारिता की रवानगी और उस शोधकर्ता का-सा परिश्रम और सजगता है जो अपने तर्क को प्रस्तुत करने के दौरान शायद ही किसी तथ्य का इस्तेमाल करने से चूकता हो।

यह मात्र संयोग है कि संग्रह के लेख पिछली सदी के अन्त और नई सदी के शुरुआती वर्षों में लिखे गए हैं। ये सत्ताओं के दमन और शोषण की विश्वव्यापी प्रवृत्तियों, ताकतवर की मनमानी व हिंसा तथा नव-साम्राज्यवादी मंशाओं के उस बोझ की ओर पूरी तीव्रता से हमारा ध्यान खींचते हैं जो नई सदी के कन्धों पर जाते हुए और भारी होता नजर आ रहा है। अरुंधति रॉय इस अमानुषिक और बर्बर होते खतरनाक समय को मात्र चित्रित नहीं करती हैं, उसके प्रति हमें आगाह भी करती हैं : यह समय मूक दर्शक बने रहने का नहीं है।

‘‘वह जंगल जो दण्डकारण्य के नाम से जाना जाता था और जो पश्चिम बंगाल, झारखंड, उड़ीसा, छत्तीसगढ़ से लेकर आन्ध्र प्रदेश के कुछ हिस्सों को समेटता हुआ महाराष्ट्र तक फैला है, लाखों आदिवासियों का घर है। मीडिया ने इसे ‘लाल गलियारा’ या ‘माओवादी गलियारा’ कहना शुरू कर दिया है। लेकिन इसे उतने ही सटीक ढंग से ‘अनुबन्ध गलियारा’ कहा जा सकता है। इससे रत्ती-भर फ़र्क़ नहीं पड़ता कि संविधान की पाँचवीं सूची में आदिवासी लोगों के संरक्षण का प्रावधान है और उनकी भूमि के अधिग्रहण पर पाबन्दी लगाई गई है। लगता यही है कि वह धारा वहाँ महज़ संविधान की शोभा बढ़ाने के लिए रखी गई है—थोड़ा-सा मिस्सी-ग़ाज़ा, लिपस्टिक-काजल। अनगिनत निगम, छोटे अनजाने व्यापारी ही नहीं, दुनिया के दैत्याकार-से-दैत्याकार इस्पात और खनन निगम—मित्तल, जिन्दल, टाटा, एस्सार, पॉस्को, रिओ टिंटो, बीएचपी बिलिटन और हाँ, वेदान्त भी—आदिवासियों के घर-बार को हड़पने की फ़िराक़ में हैं।

हर पहाड़ी, हर नदी और हर जंगल के लिए समझौता हो गया है। हम अकल्पनीय स्तर पर व्यापक सामाजिक और पर्यावरणीय कायाकल्प की बात कर रहे हैं। और इसमें से ज़्यादातर गुप्त है। मुझे क़तई नहीं लगता कि दुनिया के सबसे पुराने और दिव्य जंगल, परिवेश और आदिम समुदाय को नष्ट करने के लिए जो परियोजनाएँ शुरू हुई हैं, उनकी चर्चा भी कोपेनहेगेन में होनेवाले ‘जलवायु परिवर्तन सम्मेलन’ में होगी। माओवादी हिंसा की भयावह कहानियाँ खोजनेवाले (और न मिलने पर उन्हें गढ़ लेनेवाले) ख़बरिया चैनल लगता है, क़िस्से के इस पक्ष में बिलकुल दिलचस्पी नहीं रखते। मुझे अचरज है, ऐसा क्यों?’’

Raghavendra Patil (b.1951) belongs to the postmodernist group of writers in Kannada. Like his predecessors, U.R. Anantamurthy, Yahvant Chittal, Tejasvi and Shantinath Desai, he arrived at the novel through the short story. The Chariot (Teru), which won him the Sahitya Akademi Award, is his second novel. Though Patil belongs to the postmodern era, he does not share the thematic concerns or techniques of Western postmodernism. He is closer to the nativistic movement, which has already produced major writers like Chandrasekhar Kambar and Kum. Veerabhadrappa. He has also inherited some of the qualities of his famous uncle Anandakanda, such as an interest in local history and closeness to rural life. The story that Patil tells in The Chariot spans more than a hundred and fifty years, beginning with the years when the Peshva extended his rule to North Karnataka and ending with the years after the Emergency, and it relates to the Belagavi region, with its epicentre in an imagined but fully realised village named Dharamanatti. The novel offers two images of Teru, which in Kannada means both the chariot and the festival associated with it. The first is centred on an atrocious human sacrifice made in the name of religion by an autocratic ruler, and the second, distanced in time by a century and a half, mirrors the change from the feudal order to a democratic one, where religious superstition and feudal practices have been replaced by scepticism and the politics of power. The novel is remarkable for its innovative technique, which handles myth and reality with equal success.

Vinayak, a Sahitya Akademi-award winning Hindi Novel, as a sequel to the author;s first novel 'Gobar Ganesh', according to the novelist, is the "pratismriti" (remembrance of our national-cultural memories) and the katha or narrative of India as a civilizational state. Its multi-perspectiveal, multi-centric kathana (plot), involving characters representing a cross section of Indian Society, is marked by engaging and interesting debates on such issues as gender-politics, culturalimperialism, casteism, communalism, the Kashmir-question and the condition of Kashmiri Pundits, sustainable development, ecological consciouness, swaraj or decolonization of mind, role of "Breaking India" forces comouflaged as NGO-activism, and the all0embracing nature of the spiritual that subsumes the secular, the significance of purusharthas or cardinal principles of life, etc. A sahridaya or cultivaed reader whould also relish how deftly the narrative echoes the voices of such great masters as Valmiki, Vyas, Krishna, Keats, Rike, Yeats, Eliot, Naipaul, Proust, Prasad and others.

Raghuvar Prasad teaches Mathematics at a local college. He lives in a one-room rental eight miles away from his place of work. He travels to work by jitney, cramming into whatever space is left by other passengers, milk cans, winter blankets and vegetable baskets. The mode of transportation is unreliable; jitneys won't stop for him when they are full. A sadhu atop an elephant befriends him, offering him a ride to the college on his elephant. The Head of the Mathematics Department suggests that Raghuvar Prasad borrow the bicycle which seems to have been abandoned on the college verandah. Raghuvar Prasad tries these variations and wonders whether he shouldn't move closer to the college to save on travel costs. He has just been married. The day his wife Sonsi, arrives in town to begin their domestic life together, Raghuvar Prasad happens to come home mounted on an elephant. She imagines elephants are part of Raghuvar Prasad's usual lifestyle. Vinod Kumar Shukla's apparently slight novel reaches into the depths of feeling Raghuvar Prasad and Sonsi have for one another and for the world of lower-middle-class neighbours among whom they belong. Their possessions are meagre: the single room barely accommodates their bed, the water pot, the kitchen utensils and the tin box in which Sonsi keeps her precious things. But there is a magical place beyond the window that sustains Raghuvar Prasad's and Sonsi's spirit. This window lived in a wall.

Everyone regarded Anna as one of the most remarkable figures produced by Tamil Nadu. His greatness stems from the widespread acclaim he received from prominent leaders of his era. His various talents demonstrate his capabilities as an effective administrator, deep thinker, prolific writer, insightful journalist, and above all, a humanitarian that leaves us in awe of his literary contributions. In addition to being a remarkable orator, his political acumen further defines him as the genius of his century. In summary, Anna is a true phenomenon.

Dr. Geetha Nagabhushana's work primarily focuses on the struggles of the distressed, exploited, and naïve individuals from slums or the lowest strata of the Hindu caste system. Her unique storytelling provides a glimpse into real-life experiences that resonate deeply with us, rather than simply presenting fictional characters. The Kannada dialect used in "Baduku" deserves special recognition for its authenticity and cultural richness. Throughout the novel, the hardships faced by those in the lowest tiers of the Varna system are depicted without any apologies. The portrayal of women's struggles in "Baduku" serves as a critique of patriarchal society. The novel offers a comprehensive view of society, addressing various forms of atrocity and oppression, including issues related to class, caste, and gender, as well as the challenges faced by both urban and rural downtrodden communities. There is no fair treatment found in any of these intersections.

Tanvi realises how the definition of love keeps changing and emotions were the last parameters she considered while deciding her life. As the destiny could play, her best friend dies on the very day of her marriage, and she starts inculpating herself for the misfortune, which leads to a fractured married life. She defies everyone and goes on a road trip to Leh. In the land of lamas she tries to understand life from the lens of spirituality and starts discerning threads of coincidences. The journey helps her to understand ‘Those Unsaid Words’ which cannot be said, cannot be written, cannot be gesticulated; can only be felt.

Prema Jayakumar provides the English translation of S.K. Pottekkar's acclaimed Malayalam novel, ' Oru Deshanthinte Katha, ' published by Sahitya Akademi in 2015. The narrative centres on Sreedharan, a boy from Athiranippadam, portraying villagers' lives through the perspectives of the narrator and other characters. Set during British India, the story begins with Sreedharan's return to his hometown after more than 40 years. He is dropped near a petrol overhead tank on the site of his teenage love's house. He recounts the lives of the residents of Athiranippadam. The novel is segmented into five parts: childhood, early youth, teenage years, and a final section called "marmarangal." It features a story told by Velu Mooper, who witnesses events after Sreedharan's father's death, following his extensive travels to North India, Africa, and Europe. Throughout the story, he encounters individuals who leave lasting impressions from different stages of life, including Emma from Switzerland, a Bengali Babu, his half-brothers Kunhappu and Gopalettan (who caused him suffering by contracting syphilis), the mother goddess psyche of a Tamil Brahmin woman, with whom he longs, a girl who loved him unrequitedly before dying of tuberculosis, pranks with the " Supper Circuit Set, " lost loves, profound loneliness, his father's legendary life, and his journeys across continents. He started by dropping off his widowed mother at her family's home, initially at Elanhippoyil, then heading to Bombay- a solitary voyage into the vast, bewildering world, as SKP describes. This haunting autobiographical novel spans about 60 years of history, reflecting on themes of memory, nostalgia, hardship, dreams, and numbness. It concludes with a monologue: "Forgive me, the representative of the new generation of Athiranippadam, forgive me for trespassing into your land, and consider me merely an antique collector, a non-native!"

Post Box No. 203, Nala Sopara by Chitra Mudgal is an extremely moving, sensitive, urgent novel about the life of a transgender, Vinod is an all-rounder in school, a promising mathematician, in love with a girl, the object of envy by friends. Forceful separation from his family by a gang of hijras pushes him into the darkest dungeons of society. His childhood is destroyed due to the reluctance of his family to disclose his identity to society but he refuses to give up his dreams of living normal life. The novel also projects a beautiful relationship between mother and son. Read on to find what happens to his zeal... a thought-provoking and riveting tale of love, separation, pain, grit, couragem friendship, conspiracy, barbarity and undying hope.
