दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय की जापानी साहित्य की छात्राओं द्वारा अनूदित और उनीता सच्चिदानन्द द्वारा सम्पादित पुस्तक है। नोबेल पुरस्कार से सम्मानित जापान के अग्रणी साहित्यकार कावाबाता यासुनारी का कहानी-संग्रह ‘हथेली भर कहानियाँ’ कथा साहित्य के क्षेत्र में एक अनोखा प्रयोग है। इसे कथा-साहित्य का ‘हाइकू’ कहें तो गलत न होगा। ‘हथेली भर कहानियाँ’ का कोई प्लॉट नहीं, शुरू या अंत नहीं, बस जीवन की सामान्य अनुभूतियों की एक अविरल धारा है जो हर मुश्किलें लाँघती, चलती ही जाती है लेकिन मनुष्य इन अनुभूतियों से सदा अनभिज्ञ रहता है।

नोबेल पुरस्कार विजेता अर्थशास्त्री प्रोफेसर अमर्त्य सेन की एक दार्शनिक रचना है—‘विषमता’। उनकी कई एक विश्व-प्रसिद्ध पुस्तकों के बीच इस रचना का शुमार उनकी सोच की कुंजी के बतौर होता है। निस्संदेह यह प्रोफेसर सेन की कुछ सर्वाधिक कठिन पुस्तकों में से भी एक है। कठिन यह इस अर्थ में नहीं है कि कोई लंबी-चौड़ी उलझी हुई लफ़्फ़ाज़ी इसमें की गई है, बल्कि इस अर्थ में कि स्वतंत्रता, समानता, विविधता आदि अवधारणाओं का प्रयोग यहाँ इतने व्यापक संदर्भों में हुआ है कि उनका आदी होने में किसी को भी काफी मेहनत करनी पड़ेगी। समानता और स्वतंत्रता के बीच का विवाद इस सदी का एक महत्त्वपूर्ण दार्शनिक विवाद रहा है। शीतयुद्ध के चार दशकों ने तो इसे विश्व राजनीति के केंद्रीय विवाद का ही रूप दे दिया था। इस पुस्तक में प्रोफेसर सेन इस विवाद की तह में जाते हैं। समानतावादियों और स्वतंत्रतावादियों के मतों का विश्लेषण करते हुए प्रोफेसर सेन यह सिद्ध करते हैं कि इन दोनों के बीच विवाद दरअसल इस बात पर है ही नहीं कि मनुष्यों के बीच समानता होनी चाहिए या नहीं। विवाद तो इस बात पर है कि मनुष्यों के बीच समानता किस चीज की होनी चाहिए। इस केंद्रीय प्रश्न ‘समानता किस चीज की?’ का जवाब खोजने के क्रम में प्रोफेसर सेन मनुष्यों के बीच मौजूद भारी विविधताओं को केंद्र में रखते हैं। अपंग व्यक्ति, गर्भवती स्त्री, कालाजार प्रभावित इलाकों में रहनेवाले आदिवासी या स्वेच्छया सारी सुख-सुविधाओं का त्याग कर जनता की सेवा करनेवाले सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता–सभी उनकी नजर में रहते हैं और मनुष्य की किसी भी गढ़ी-गढ़ाई परिभाषा से वे ठोस रूपाकार वाले मनुष्यों का कुछ खास भला होते नहीं देखते। उनका केंद्रीकरण आमतौर पर भिन्न-भिन्न लक्ष्यों के लिए प्रयास करने की मानवीय स्वतंत्रता पर और खासतौर पर विविध मूल्यों को अर्जित करने की अलग-अलग व्यक्तियों के सामर्थ्य पर है। स्वतंत्रता और समानता को लेकर आपके विचार चाहे जो भी हों और प्रोफेसर सेन के विचारों से उनकी कोई संगति बैठती हो या न बैठती हो पर इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं कि इस विश्लेषण से गुजरने के बाद आपकी सोच का दायरा पहले से बढ़ चुका होगा।

अठारह बरस की उम्र में अरुंधति रॉय जिस माँ को छोड़कर भागीं, उनकी मौत से जज़्बाती तौर पर वह इस क़दर बिखर गईं कि उनकी यादों को सहेजते हुए उन्होंने यह असाधारण आख्यान लिखना शुरू किया। यह शानदार संस्मरण अन्तरंग है और प्रेरक भी, बहुत बार परेशान करने वाला और हैरानी की हद तक दिलचस्प भी। बचपन से लेकर वर्तमान तक, आयमनम से लेकर दिल्ली तक के सफ़र की यह गाथा हमें उन हालात से भी रूबरू कराती है, जिसने उन्हें वह इनसान और लेखक बना दिया, जो वह आज हैं।
