A New Beginning is a translation of Nanjil Nadan's collection of short stories entitled Soodiya Poo Soodarka, which won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2010. These stories cover a wide range of topics and illuminate the facility and ease with which the author handles them. He draws us into different worlds, from the world of the Nepali migrant security guard Dhanram Singh, to the heartbreaking story of a particularly devastating drought in Central India, petty bureaucrats making a few pennies from the events they organise to the stories of the little-known household deities of the south. Every story is set in a different milieu, and yet every one of them is about the shared experience and the foibles of the common man or woman, and always told with the unfailing empathy and the gentle sense of irony that is the hallmark of all of Nanjil Nadan's creative work.
