মানুষ নামক প্রাণীটির সবচেয়ে বড় বৈশিষ্ট্য হল তার বৈচিত্র। এতরকম চেহারা, এত ভাষা, এত খাদ্য, এত পোষাক, এত ধর্ম ও প্রথা জগতে আর কারও নেই। এটা যেমন একদিকে মানুষের অনন্ত সৃজনী প্রতিভার পরিচয় বহন করে, অন্যদিকে মানুষের ভেতর নানা ভেদাভেদ, কলহ, হিংস্রতা, এমনকি যুদ্ধ ও হত্যা সৃষ্টি করে। একজন মানুষ অন্য মানুষের কাছে বিজাতীয় হয়ে যায়। সৃষ্টির আদিম যুগ থেকেই বিজাতীয়তা মানব সমাজে একটা বিষম সমস্যা। এই সব নিয়েই এই উপন্যাসটি।মানুষের বৈচিত্র্য, ভেদাভেদ ও বিজাতীয়তার দ্বন্দ্ব নিয়ে রচিত এক অনন্য উপন্যাস — যেখানে সৃষ্টির আদিকাল থেকে চলে আসা মানবিক সংঘাতের গভীর অনুসন্ধান।

‘বিশ্বাস’এর কাছে নতজানু হয়ে থাকেন মানুষ। সে ‘বিশ্বাস’ই তার ইবাদত। তার ইহকাল-পরকালের মুক্তি। বিপুলা-বিরাট পৃথিবীর মনুষ্য-জীবনে সে ইবাদতের আঙ্গিকও ভিন্ন ভিন্ন। প্রকৃতি যখন রুষ্ট হয়ে ওঠে, অসহায় মানুষ তখন ঈশ্বরের ইবাদতে রত হন। এ আখ্যান তেমনই এক ‘ইবাদত’কে ঘিরে। খরায় পুড়ে যাচ্ছে মাটি। চাষ-আবাদ বন্ধ। মানুষ আকাশের দিকে তাকিয়ে আছেন, কখন মেঘ উঠবে। ঝরবে বৃষ্টি। কিন্তু কোত্থাও সে বৃষ্টির দেখা নেই! অসহায় মানুষ তখন ‘ইসতিসকার নামাজ’ নামের এক বিশেষ নামাজে দাঁড়ান। সে ইবাদত কোনও ‘ব্যক্তি ইবাদত’ নয়, সে ইবাদত ‘সমগ্রের ইবাদত’। খরাগ্রস্থ সমস্ত জনপদের মানুষ সে বিশেষ নামাজে উপস্থিত হন। একবার নয়, একাধিকবার। তারপরে কি দেখা মেলে সেই ‘রহমতের বৃষ্টির’? সে ইবাদতের ভিতর কোথাও কি কোনও ত্রুটি থেকে যায়? কিংবা কোনও পাপ? ঈশ্বর যে পাপকে পছন্দ করেন না। প্রকৃতিও কি সে পাপের ইশারা শোনে? সে ‘পাপ’কে কেন্দ্র করে আখ্যান অন্য এক মাত্রা নেয়। মানুষ, ঈশ্বর, ধর্ম আর পাপ সেখানে একাকার হয়ে যায়। এ যেন অন্য এক শাশ্বত সত্যকে খোঁজা। সে সত্যের সন্ধান পাওয়া কি এতই সহজ? কেউ কি তাকে আড়াল করে রাখে? প্রকৃতি সে আড়ালকে উন্মোচন করে দেয়। লেখক তাঁর সুনিপুণ শৈলিতে সেসবকে জীবন্ত করে তোলেন। ভাষার বুনন আর গদ্যের নতুন আঙ্গিকে আখ্যানটি এক চিরকালীন ভাষ্য হয়ে ওঠে। স্থানীয় উচ্চারণে, বাক্যগঠনে আর শব্দ ব্যবহারে যে উপভাষা তৈরি হয়, তার অবলম্বনে সার্থকতার সঙ্গে অনবদ্য পারঙ্গমতায় এ আখ্যান লিখেছেন লেখক।
