The question that the novel poses before the reader is, “Can everything be alright?” Moreover, the intervention of God or Nature at various places is symbolic in asserting that human beings should not try to behave like the Lord of the Universe.

- Description: बेहद सहज और सरल ढंग से क़िस्सागोई की शैली में लिखा गया यह उपन्यास बंगाली समाज के स्वभाव और चरित्र का सच्चा एवं प्रामाणिक चित्र उपस्थित करता है। महानगरीय जीवन की भागमभाग और गहमागहमी से ऊबी–थकी अविवाहित कामकाजी युवती, अरा, जब अपनी बड़ी बहन स्मृति के घर बिलासपुर छुट्टियाँ बिताने पहुँचती है तो उसके सामने धीरे–धीरे जीवन का सर्वथा नया अर्थ खुलता चला जाता है। उसके अभावग्रस्त एकाकी जीवन की थकान दूर होती है और वह जीवन–राग एवं प्रकृति–राग से लबरेज तरोताज़ा होकर कलकत्ता लौटती है। हर जीवन महाजीवन है और ढोने के लिए नहीं, जीने के लिए है—जीवन का यह पाठ अरा को प्रकृति से समृद्ध आदिवासी अंचल छत्तीसगढ़ की गोद में बसे बिलासपुर में मिलता है। महानगरीय जीवन–बोध और प्रकृत आदिवासी जीवन–बोध की टकराहट की अनुगूँज लिए यह छोटी–सी औपन्यासिक कृति एक सूने सितार के तार छेड़ने की तरह है। यह सितार है ‘अरा’ जिसके तार छेड़ता है ‘परदेसिया’ और जिसकी झंकृति पाठक के दिलो–दिमाग़ में देर–देर तक, दूर–दूर तक बनी रहती है। बांग्ला के अग्रिम पंक्ति के कथाकार बुद्धदेव गुहा ने अपनी व्यापक यात्राओं के दौरान पहाड़ों, जंगलों और नदियों को काफ़ी नज़दीक एवं आत्मीयता के साथ देखा है और अपनी रचनाओं के ज़रिए पाठकों में प्रकृति से प्रेम करने की ललक जगाई है। उनके साहित्य में स्त्री–पुरुष प्रेम से लेकर जनसाधारण तक के प्रति रागात्मक सम्बन्धों का विस्तार देखा जा सकता है। यह उपन्यास इस बात की बहुत ही सशक्त तरीक़े से पुष्टि करता है।

- Description: 1960 के आरम्भिक दिनों में मैंने दो मुख्य फ़िल्में (फ़ीचर फ़िल्म) बनाने में मदद की थी और अपने को एक मुख्य फ़िल्म निर्देशन के योग्य मान रहा था। मैं इधर-उधर एक कहानी तलाश रहा था। मेरे मित्र और सहयोगी अरुण कौल ने राजेन्द्र यादव की कहानी ‘सारा आकाश’ का सुझाव दिया। उसकी एक प्रति उनके पास थी, उन्होंने मुझे दे दी। एक शाम मैं उसे एक ही साँस में पढ़ गया और मैं अभिभूत ही था। ‘सारा आकाश’ एक जटिल कथा के रूप में लिखा गया था। लेखक ने सपाट रास्ता नहीं चुना था, इसीलिए इसने मुझे ज़्यादा आकर्षित किया था। दृश्यों को मैंने यथासम्भव वर्णन के निकट रखा है। चूँकि लेखक ने कहानी फ़िल्म के लिए नहीं लिखी थी, अत: उसमें बहुत-सी बातों का विवरण दिया गया है जिनको दृश्यों में रूपान्तरित करना एक चुनौती थी।...ऐसे ही कई स्थान हैं जहाँ नायक अतीत और भविष्य के बारे में बहुत कुछ सोच रहा है। छठे दशक के मध्य में मैंने अनेक यूरोपीय और रूसी फ़िल्में देखी थीं। मुझे ऐसे दृश्य लिखने में इनसे सहायता मिली। पटकथा लिखने के बाद मुझे इसे विक्रम सिंह को दिखाने का अवसर मिला। वे अपने समय में ‘टाइम्स ऑफ़ इंडिया’ के सर्वश्रेष्ठ फ़िल्म आलोचक थे। उन्होंने मेरे प्रयास की सराहना की और मुझे फ़िल्म बनाने के लिए प्रोत्साहित किया। और ‘सारा आकाश’ बन गई। 1970 में ‘फ़िल्मफ़ेयर’ के समारोह में इसे वर्ष की सर्वश्रेष्ठ पटकथा घोषित किया गया। निर्देशन के लिए इसकी सिफ़ारिश राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार के लिए भी की गई। इसके कैमरामैन को सर्वश्रेष्ठ छायाचित्रण के लिए पुरस्कार भी मिला। —बासु चटर्जी

He started by dropping off his widowed mother at her family's home, initially at Elanhippoyil, then heading to Bombay- a solitary voyage into the vast, bewildering world, as SKP describes. This haunting autobiographical novel spans about 60 years of history, reflecting on themes of memory, nostalgia, hardship, dreams, and numbness. It concludes with a monologue: "Forgive me, the representative of the new generation of Athiranippadam, forgive me for trespassing into your land, and consider me merely an antique collector, a non-native!"

- Description: Raghuvar Prasad teaches Mathematics at a local college. He lives in a one-room rental eight miles away from his place of work. He travels to work by jitney, cramming into whatever space is left by other passengers, milk cans, winter blankets and vegetable baskets. The mode of transportation is unreliable; jitneys won't stop for him when they are full. A sadhu atop an elephant befriends him, offering him a ride to the college on his elephant. The Head of the Mathematics Department suggests that Raghuvar Prasad borrow the bicycle which seems to have been abandoned on the college verandah. Raghuvar Prasad tries these variations and wonders whether he shouldn't move closer to the college to save on travel costs. He has just been married. The day his wife Sonsi, arrives in town to begin their domestic life together, Raghuvar Prasad happens to come home mounted on an elephant. She imagines elephants are part of Raghuvar Prasad's usual lifestyle. Vinod Kumar Shukla's apparently slight novel reaches into the depths of feeling Raghuvar Prasad and Sonsi have for one another and for the world of lower-middle-class neighbours among whom they belong. Their possessions are meagre: the single room barely accommodates their bed, the water pot, the kitchen utensils and the tin box in which Sonsi keeps her precious things. But there is a magical place beyond the window that sustains Raghuvar Prasad's and Sonsi's spirit. This window lived in a wall.
