शाइरों और अदीबों की हाज़िरजवाबी, तंज और मजाहिया गुफ़्तगू में भी शाइरी और इल्म की गहरी बातें छिपी होती हैं| ये चीज़ें किसी भाषा के अदब का अनौपचारिक विस्तार ही नहीं होतीं, उस साहित्य और समाज की आत्मा में झाँकने का एक खूबसूरत झरोखा हैं| इस किताब में शामिल लतीफ़ों से लगभग दो सौ सालों के महान शाइरों, संपादको, सियासी शख्शियतों और पत्रकारों का किरदार उभरता है| साथ ही भारतीय उपमहाद्वीप का बौद्धिक परिदृश्य बनता दिखाई पड़ता है

‘अरबी ज़बान’ में ‘अशरा’ लफ़्ज़ के मानी होते हैं—'दस', इसी से ये बात समझ आनी चाहिए कि इदरीस बाबर ने उर्दू में एक ऐसी सिन्फ़ या फ़ॉर्म ईजाद की है, जिसमें सिर्फ़ दस मिसरे होते हैं। दिलचस्प बात ये है कि ‘अशरा’ किसी भी तरह लिखा जा सकता है। ग़ज़ल, नज़्म, आज़ाद नज़्म या फिर नसरी नज़्म के तौर पर भी। इसी लिए इस किताब में आपको ‘अशरे’ के ये सभी रूप दिखाई देंगे। ‘अशरे’ को किसी ख़ास मौज़ू का मोहताज भी नहीं बनाया गया है, एक अशरा जहाँ सियासी हो सकता है तो वहीं दूसरा ‘समाजी’ और 'इस्लाही' या फिर इश्क़-ओ-आशिक़ी से भी उसका तअल्लुक़ हो सकता है। ऐसा नहीं है कि क्लासिकल शायरी में दस मिसरों की ऐसी कोई सिन्फ़ मौजूद नहीं थी, दकन से लेकर शुमाली हिन्दुस्तान तक दस मिसरों की ऐसी नज़्मों को ‘मुअश्शर’ कहा जाता था। मगर इदरीस बाबर की इस नई सिन्फ़ ने ख़ुद को बहर और उस्लूब की क़ैद से आज़ाद करके इसमें कई नए इमकान पैदा कर दिए हैं, इस बात का सुबूत आपको ये किताब पढ़ कर मिल जाएगा। इदरीस बाबर नए शायरों में एक बेचैन और तज’रबा-पसन्द शायर हैं। वह किसी एक कल बैठने को तख़लीक़कार के लिए अच्छा नहीं मानते। इसी वजह से उनके यहाँ अलफ़ाज़ से लेकर अहसास तक हर क़दम पर नैरंगी दिखाई देती है। उर्दू अदब में इदरीस बाबर की ईजाद की हुई इस सिन्फ़ का इस्तक़बाल हुआ है और बहुत से लोग अशरे लिख रहे हैं। आप भी अगर उर्दू अदब में तेज़ी से पनपती इस नई सिन्फ़-ए-सुख़न से वाक़िफ़ होना चाहते हैं तो ये किताब ज़रूर पढ़िए।

गहरी से गहरी बात को आसानी से कह देने का जटिल हुनर जाननेवाले राहत भाई से मेरा बड़ा लम्बा परिचय है। मुशायरे या कवि-सम्मेलन में वे कमल के पत्ते पर बूँद की तरह रहते हैं। पत्ता हिलता है, झंझावात आते हैं, बूँद पत्ते से नहीं गिरती। कई बार कवि और शायर कार्यक्रम शुरू होने से पहले मंच पर आसन जमा लेते हैं, लेकिन इस नए कॉरपोरेट ज़माने में चूँकि कवि-सम्मेलन या मुशायरा एक शो या इवैंट की तरह हैं, तो शुरुआत से पहले आम तौर से शायर हज़रात मंच के पीछे खड़े रहते हैं। नाम के साथ एक-एक करके उनको पुकारा जाता है, तब मंच पर आते हैं। जिस शायर के लिए ख़ूब देर तक ख़ूब सारी तालियाँ बजती रहती हैं, उनका नाम है राहत इन्दौरी। एक अध्यापक जैसे सादा लिबास में वे आते हैं, जो बिलकुल शायराना नहीं होता। तालियों के प्रत्युत्तर में वे हल्का सा झुककर सामईन को आदाब करते हैं और बैठने के लिए अपनी सुविधा की जगह देखते हैं, वैसे उन्हें पालथी मारकर बैठने में भी कोई गुरेज़ नहीं होता। एक बेपरवाही भी शाइस्तगी के साथ मंच पर बैठती है, जब राहत भाई बैठते हैं। आम तौर से हथेली को गद्दे से टिका देते हैं। मैं कई बार उनके गाढ़े साँवले सीधे हाथ को, जिसको वे टिकाते हैं, देर तक देखता रहता हूँ, उसकी अँगूठियों को निहारता हूँ और उँगली अँगूठे के पोरों को देखता हूँ कि कितनी ख़ुश होती होगी वह क़लम जब इस हाथ से अशआर निकलते होंगे। ऐसे अशआर जिनकी ज़िन्दगी बहुत तवील है, बहुत लम्बी है।

राहत साहब जब माइक पर आते हैं तो लगता है कि ये ज़मीन से जुड़ा हुआ आदमी कुछ इस तरह खड़ा है कि ज़मीन ख़ुश है और वो जब हाथ ऊपर उठाते हैं तो लगता है कि आसमान छू रहे हैं। वे तालियों से बहुत ख़ुश हो जाएँ या अपने अशआर सुनाते वक़्त तालियों की अपेक्षा रखें, ऐसा नहीं होता। उनका अन्दाज़, उनके अल्फाज़, उनकी अदायगी, ज़बान पर उनकी पकड़, उनकी आवाज़ का थ्रो, उनके हाथों का संचालन, माइक से दूर और पास आने की उनकी कला, शब्द की अन्तिम ध्वनि को खींचने का उनका कौशल, एक पंक्ति को कई बार दोहराकर सोचने का समय देने की होशियारी, एक भी शब्द कहीं ज़ाया न हो जाए इसकी सावधानी, न कोई भूमिका और न उपसंहार, अगर होते हैं तो सिर्फ़ और सिर्फ़ अशआर। बहुत नहीं सुनाते हैं, लेकिन जो सुना जाते हैं, वह कम नहीं लगता। क्योंकि वे जो सुना गए, उस पर सोचने के लिए कई गुना वक़्त ज़रूरी होता है। वे सामईन को स्तब्ध कर देते हैं। वे अपने जादू की तैयारी नहीं करते, लेकिन जब डायस पर आ जाते हैं तो उनका जादू सिर चढ़कर बोलता है। राहत इन्दौरी का होना एक होना होता है। वे अपनी निज की अनोखी शैली हैं, दुनिया-भर के सैकड़ों शायर उनका अनुकरण करते हैं, लेकिन सिर्फ़ कहन की शैली से क्या होता है, शैली के पीछे सोच और समझ का व्यापक भंडार भी तो होना चाहिए।

‘जुगनुओं ने फिर अँधेरों से लड़ाई जीत ली, चाँद, सूरज घर के रौशनदान में रखे रहे' ये शे’र ये बताता है कि उनके अन्दर इतना हौसला है कि कायनात से चाँद-सूरज को उठाकर वे अपने रौशनदान में रख सकते हैं। रौशनदान दोनों तरफ़ उजाला करता है। घर के अन्दर भी और घर के बाहर भी। अगर वे सूरज, चाँद हैं तो। मुझे लगता है कि राहत इन्दौरी एक रौशनदान हैं, जो आभ्यन्तर लोक को भी देदीप्यमान करते हैं तो बहिर्लोक को भी चुँधिया देते हैं। बहुत लम्बी चर्चा की जा सकती है राहत भाई के बारे में वो कवि-सम्मेलनों और मुशायरों के लिए एक राहत हैं, एक धरोहर हैं क्योंकि वे सामईन की चाहत हैं। मैं दुआ करता हूँ कि राहत भाई कवि-सम्मेलन और मुशायरों को स्तरीय बनाए रखने में अपना योगदान दीर्घकाल तक देते रहें...!

शाहीन अब्बास को पढ़ते समय उनके यहाँ मौजूद मुश्किल ख़यालों को रवानी से बयान कर देने की ख़ूबी जिस तरह उजागर होती है, वह एक ख़ुशगवार हैरत से दो-चार करवाती है। उनके कलाम में रिवायत और जदीदियत का ऐसा मिलन है जो आम तौर पर शायरी करने वाले दूसरे शायरों के यहाँ इस ख़ूबसूरती से कम ही अपनी जगह बना पाता है। शाहीन अब्बास की ग़ज़ल को पढ़े बग़ैर इस दौर की शेरी समझ को पूरी तरह ख़ुद में उतार पाना ना-मुमकिन-सा काम है। वह अपनी शायरी में शहर के बदलते हुए इनसान, जज़्बों की टूट फूट और सियासत को भी कई बार उस बारीक ऐनक से देखते हैं, जिसकी वजह से उनकी ग़ज़ल में मौजूद इशारे पढ़ने वाले पर ज़्यादा आसानी से वाज़ेह होते चले जाते हैं। वह पिछले तीस-पैंतीस बरस से ग़ज़ल की दुनिया में अपने अनोखे उस्लूब का जादू जगा रहे हैं और उनकी आवाज़ वक़्त के साथ-साथ और मज़बूत होती जा रही है। आसान ज़बान और दुश्वार ख़यालात से बुनी गई उनकी ग़ज़ल ‘इश्क़-ओ-आशिक़ी’ के अलावा वुजूद और ज़हन से जुड़े मसलों की तरफ़ भी बख़ूबी इशारे करती है। वह हर लिहाज़ से एक ना-क़ाबिल-ए-फ़रामोश शायर हैं, जिन्होंने अपने ज़माने में ही अपनी बेहतरीन शेरी और फ़िक्री दुनियाओं के नक़्शे बना लिए हैं। उनको पढ़ कर शेर कहने का सच्चा सलीक़ा सीखा जा सकता है।

कौन आएगा! किसकी आहट पर मिट्टी के कान लगे हैं! ख़ुशबू किसको ढूँढ रही है! शबनम का आशोब समझ और देख कि उन फूलों की आँखें किस का रस्ता देख रही हैं किसकी ख़ातिर क़रया-क़रया जाग रहा है सूना रस्ता गूँज रहा है किसकी ख़ातिर!! तनहाई के हौल नगर मे शब-भर गिरते पत्तों की आवाज़ें चुनता रहता हूँ अपने सर पर तेज़ हवा के नौहे सुनता रहता हूँ

उर्दू शायरी में जिन नए शायरों के दस्तख़त बहुत मज़बूती के साथ अपनी जगह बनाते नज़र आते हैं, उनमें मुबश्शिर सईद का नाम ख़ास तौर पर शामिल है। वह कहीं सूफ़ियाना रक़्स के धीमेपन की तरह पढ़ने वाले को सुकून बख़्शते हैं तो कहीं किसी भड़कते हुए शोले की तरह अपनी लपट में पढ़ने वाले को लपेटने का हुनर रखते हैं। ‘ख़्वाबगाह में रेत’ मुबश्शिर सईद का पहला मजमूआ है और इसने अपनी मुनफ़रिद शैली की बुनियाद पर बहुत कम समय में शोहरत की बुलन्दियाँ तय की हैं। वह धीमे लहजे के शायर हैं और ग़ज़ल के हुनर पर गहरी पकड़ रखते हैं। उनकी शायराना सलाहियत जहाँ पढ़ने वाले को एक तरफ़ उर्दू की नई ग़ज़ल के चेहरे से वाक़िफ़ कराती है, वहीं इस सिन्फ़-ए-सुख़न की इक्कीसवीं सदी में बदलती हुई शक्ल से भी आशना करवाती है।

अब्बास ताबिश की ग़ज़लों में एक साधा हुआ रूमान है, जिसकी हदें इंसानी रूह और इंसानों की दूर-दूर तक फैली हुई दुनिया के तमामतर मसलों पर निगाह डालती हैं। वे पाकिस्तान से हैं और उर्दू शायरी की उस रवायत में हैं जिससे पाकिस्तान के साथ-साथ हिन्दुस्तान के लोग भी बख़ूबी परिचित हैं, और जिसके दीवाने दोनों मुल्कों में बराबर पाए जाते हैं। अहसास के उनके यहाँ कई रंग हैं, यानी ये नहीं कहा जा सकता कि वे सिर्फ़ इश्क़ के शायर हैं, या सिर्फ़, फ़लसफ़े की गुत्थियों को ही अपने अशआर में खोलते हैं, या सिर्फ़ दुनियावी समझ और ज़िन्दगी को ही अपना विषय बनाते हैं। उनके यहाँ यह सब भी है—मसलन यह शेर, ‘हम हैं सूखे हुए तालाब पे बैठे हुए हंस, जो तआल्लुक़ को निभाते हुए मर जाते हैं।’ इस शे’र में निहाँ विराग और लगाव हैरान कर देनेवाला है, उसको कहने का अन्दाज़ तो लाजवाब है ही। अपनी बात को कहने के लिए वे अपने अहसास को एक तस्वीर की शक्ल में हम तक पहुँचाते हैं जो पढ़ने-सुनने वाले के ज़ेहन में नक़्श हो जाता है। ‘मैं कैसे अपने तवाज़ुन को बरकरार रक्खूँ, क़दम जमाऊँ तो साँसें उखड़ने लगती हैं’। इस शे’र में क्या एक भरा-पूरा आदमी अपने वजूद की चुनौतियों को सँभालने की जद्दोजहद में हलकान हमारे सामने साकार नहीं हो जाता? अब्बास ताबिश की विशेषताओं में यह चित्रात्मकता सबसे ज़्यादा ध्यान आकर्षित करती है। मिसाल के लिए एक और शे’र, ‘ये जो मैं भागता हूँ वक़्त से आगे-आगे, मेरी वहशत के मुताबिक़ ये रवानी कम है’। अब्बास ताबिश की चुनिन्दा ग़ज़लों का यह संग्रह उनकी अब तक प्रकाशित सभी किताबों की नुमायंदगी करता है। उम्मीद है हिन्दी के शायरी-प्रेमी पाठक इस किताब से उर्दू ग़ज़ल के एक और ताक़तवर पहलू से परिचित होंगे।

अली अकबर नातिक़ की नज़्म जितनी मुनफ़रिद और बाँकी है, उतनी ही उनकी ग़ज़ल में ताज़गी और नुदरत है। वह एक ऐसे अदीब हैं जो एक ही समय में नस्र और नज़्म पर एक जैसी क़ुदरत रखते हैं। ग़ज़ल में उनका रुझान ज़्यादातर फ़ितरत से फूटने वाली सुन्दरता की उन निशानियों को क़ैद करने की तरफ़ है, जिन पर अक्सर शायरों का ध्यान नहीं जाता। ज़बान का असर उनके यहाँ जादुई तरकीबों और नित-नए इस्तिआरों की दुनिया आबाद करता हुआ नज़र आता है। वह अपनी ग़ज़ल से कम पहचाने गए हैं, और उनके पढ़ने वालों के लिए ये एक ऐसा ज़ाविया है, जिस पर ध्यान दिए बिना आप अली अकबर नातिक़ की तख़्लीक़ी दुनिया का सुराग़ ठीक-ठीक नहीं लगा सकते। वह अपनी ग़ज़लों में निहायत मुश्किल और पथरीली ज़मीनों पर चलते हुए फ़िक्र और बयान के ऐसे ख़ूबसूरत फूल खिलाने का हुनर जानते हैं कि पढ़ते हुए उनके हुनर पर हज़ार हैरत होती है। उर्दू शायरी के मुआसिर शायरों में अली अकबर नातिक़ पहले भी किसी तार्रुफ़ के मोहताज नहीं रहे हैं, मगर ये किताब उनकी तारीफ़ के एक नए पहलू से पढ़ने वालों को रू-शनास कराती चलती है।

इदरीस बाबर ने अपनी ग़ज़ल के ज़रिये नई शायरी को दरयाफ़्त किया है। उनकी किताब ‘यूँ ही’ की तमाम ग़ज़लों की ख़ासियत ये है कि वह ग़ज़ल के पुराने और घिसे-पिटे मज़ामीन को दोहराती नहीं हैं, बल्कि जदीद ज़िन्दगी से जुड़े इंसानी मामलात को अपना मौज़ू बनाती हैं। अपनी ग़ज़ल में वह उर्दू से वाबस्ता नफ़ासत और नज़ाकत को नज़र अन्दाज़ करते हुए ऐसे अलफ़ाज़ के इस्तेमाल करने में भी कोई बुराई महसूस नहीं करते, जिनको बहुत पहले मेयारी ज़बान के तसव्वुर ने बाहर का रास्ता दिखा दिया था। उनके अन्दर का ग़ज़ल-गो हर तरह से समाज की बदलती हुई ज़हनी करवट, सियासी निज़ाम में धँसी हुई इनसानी चीख़ और रोज़मर्रा की ज़िन्दगी में इश्क़ करते, भटकते, बेरोज़गार और बा-सलाहियत नौजवान की बे-चैनी से वाक़िफ़ है। इदरीस बाबर के लिए कहा जा सकता है कि ग़ज़ल में ज़बान और बयान के जितने तज'रबे उन्होंने ज़फ़र इक़बाल के बाद किये हैं, वह अपने पहले शेरी मजमूए में किसी और शायर ने शायद ही किये हों। इस तरह वह जदीदतरीन ग़ज़ल में वाक़ई अनोखे लहजे के एक बा-कमाल शायर के तौर पर ख़ुद को मनवाने की भरपूर ताक़त रखते हैं। उनकी इस किताब से आपको उनके नएपन का महज़ कुछ पन्ने पलटते ही अन्दाज़ा हो जाएगा।

अम्बरीन हसीब अम्बर की शायरी में एक अलग तरह का फ़िक्री जहान नज़र आता है। वह एक तरफ़ हुस्न की जानिब से शायरी में अपना मुक़द्दमा पेश करती नज़र आती हैं और नाज़ और अदा कही जाने वाली महबूबा की ज़िन्दगी के असली मसलों से हमें रू-ब-रू करवाती हैं तो वहीं दूसरी तरफ़ वह इतिहास की धूल में दफ़नाई हुई औरत के सवालों को भी दौर-ए-हाज़िर के दामन पर सब्त करती हुई मालूम होती हैं। ‘याद का चेहरा’ ग़ज़ल और नज़्म का एक ऐसा गुलदस्ता है जिसमें सिर्फ़ तख़य्युल के फूल ही नहीं हैं, बल्कि आज की औरत के चुभते हुए तंज़ के काँटे भी हैं। वह ज़ुल्म और जब्र से आँखों में आँखें डाल कर मुकालमा करने की रवादार हैं। मोहब्बत में भी वह अगर एक तरफ़ ईसार और क़ुर्बानी के जज़्बे को अहम तस्लीम करती हैं तो वहीं अपना हक़ माँगने से भी पीछे नहीं हटती हैं। वफ़ा उनके लिए मर्द को तन्हाई से जहान-ए-रंगीं तक लाती है, मगर ख़ुद के जहान-ए-रंगीं से तन्हाई तक पहुँचने को नज़रअन्दाज़ नहीं करती। उनकी शायरी की इस ख़ूबसूरत किताब को उन्हीं के अल्फ़ाज़ में कुछ यूँ पेश किया जा सकता है— तंज़ रुसवाई सितम शिकवे गिले हैं यही शायद वफ़ाओं के सिले मुझको दुनिया की नहीं है आरज़ू मेरे होने की ख़बर मुझको मिले

In this book an attempt has been made to compare the two legendary writers by comparing the eastern way of thinking with the western way. Shakespeare is amongst the writers Sri Aurobindo holds in high esteem. Sri Aurobindo’s admiration for the great dramatist resulted in obvious Shakespearean influences on him. He adopts for his plays Elizabethan model of drama perfected by Shakespeare’s genius. Shakespeare’s influence is traceable also in Sri Aurobindo’s sonnets. It is said that Sri Aurobindo had Shakespearean literature on his bed-side when he left his mortal remains. Both the great writers were not satisfied by merely holding mirror to the nature but due to their greater and deeper life power, they recreated the human life in its beauty and completeness. Therefore, there is an obvious need to compare and contrast Shakeapeare and Sri Aurobindo so as to bring out affinities that may be there between their creative ideal and vision as well as their poetic and dramatic art, along with the former’s influence on the later. In this book an attempt has been made to fulfill the need and to contribute, in some measure to the appreciation of Sri Aurobindo’s poetry and plays. It also briefly touches upon Indian response to Shakespeare. It focuses mainly on Sri Aurobindo’s numerous insights and critical observations on him. To sum up writings of the two such outstanding writers, who represent two very different ways of thinking. On one hand Shakespeare potrays lot of blood shed, gory tales and a wild kind of poetic justice in his writings, but on the other hand Sri Aurobindo truely follows Indian ethos of non violence or ‘Ahimsa’. The author underlines the stark similarities and differences in both the writer’s exploring their plays and sonnets. The structure of plays and sonnets may be same of both the greatest minds but ethos and personna ingrained in their writings is quite different.

Ramachandra's honesty, self-reflection, and the conflict between his traditional Vaishnava beliefs and modern education make this book remarkable. During the nationalist struggle, he was attracted to extremist ideas but found his own path again through personal struggles. It's astonishing that someone who was a great scholar in Sanskrit, Telugu, Kannada, and Prakrit, had to experience hunger and travel across India to find work to feed himself in the 1930s and 40s. The book is filled with unbelievable incidents, such as his mentor Veturi Prabhakara Sastry experiencing extreme hunger while the author survived on very little food. Similarly, he survived on Ganga water for almost a month while waiting in Kanpur for a conman who had promised a business partnership. He did a variety of jobs, including working as a cataloguer in manuscript libraries, a hotel worker, and a Havaldar clerk in the military, before finally settling in a newspaper. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi 2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948) was an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist, and political ethicist, who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British Rule, and in turn inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. The honorific Mahātmā (Sanskrit: "great-souled", "venerable"), first applied to him in 1914 in South Africa, is now used throughout the world. Born and raised in a Hindu family in coastal Gujarat, western India, Gandhi trained in law at the Inner Temple, London, and was called to the bar at age 22 in June 1891. After two uncertain years in India, where he was unable to start a successful law practice, he moved to South Africa in 1893 to represent an Indian merchant in a lawsuit. He went on to stay for 21 years. It was in South Africa that Gandhi raised a family, and first employed nonviolent resistance in a campaign for civil rights. In 1915, aged 45, he returned to India. He set about organising peasants, farmers, and urban labourers to protest against excessive land-tax and discrimination. Assuming leadership of the Indian National Congress in 1921, Gandhi led nationwide campaigns for easing poverty, expanding women's rights, building religious and ethnic amity, ending untouchability, and above all for achieving Swaraj or self-rule. Gandhi's vision of an independent India based on religious pluralism was challenged in the early 1940s by a new Muslim nationalism which was demanding a separate Muslim homeland carved out of India.
