सुखी और दुखी, सहयोगी और विरोधी, उत्कर्ष और पतन, आदर्श और व्यवहार, व्यावसायिक और मानवीय—बहुविध मानव चरित्रों की कथा है यह उपन्यास ‘चौरंगी’। शाहजहाँ होटल के माध्यम से लेखक केवल कलकत्ता का चित्र नहीं, बल्कि सम्पूर्ण मानव व्यवहार का चित्र प्रस्तुत करता है। इस उपन्यास में इतने अधिक विविधरंगी चरित्र हैं कि इसे सहज ही मानव जीवन की महागाथा कहा जा सकता है पर महागाथाओं की तरह इसमें कोई महानायक नहीं है, इसीलिए यह उपन्यास कोई आदर्श भी नहीं रचता। यह केवल परत-दर-परत मानवीय व्यवहार के विभिन्न पहलुओं को खोलता चलता है। यही वजह है कि कई बार एक ही व्यक्ति के चरित्र के दो रूप उभरकर सामने आते हैं। महानगरीय जीवन की महत्त्वाकांक्षाओं के बीच किस तरह से इच्छाएँ और सम्बन्ध दम तोड़ जाते हैं, यह इसमें बख़ूबी देखा जा सकता है। परन्तु कभी भी सब कुछ नहीं टूटता, कभी भी सब कुछ नष्ट नहीं होता। नष्ट होने के बीच बहुत कुछ ऐसा बचा रहता है जो नए निर्माण की आशा को जीवित रखता है। बहुरंगी चरित्रों की इस महागाथा को बाँधे रखनेवाला एकमात्र सूत्र है, सहज मानवीय स्नेह। शाहजहाँ होटल में काम करते हुए नायक को सबसे अधिक ऐश्वर्य जो मिला वह था साथ काम करनेवालों का स्नेह। और यही स्नेह सब कुछ नष्ट हो जाने के बीच भी निर्माण की आशा को बरकरार रखता है।
