आज की प्रतियोगितावादी और मशीनी दुनिया में हमारे सामने अनेक नई समस्याएँ और प्रश्न उठ खड़े हुए हैं। इन्हीं में एक प्रमुख प्रश्न हमारी शिक्षा से भी सम्बन्ध रखता है, क्योंकि यही वह औज़ार है जो हमें लगातार असहिष्णु होती दुनिया में बेहतर मनुष्य बनाने में काम आ सकता है। आख़िर शिक्षा है क्या? उसका उद्देश्य क्या है? शिक्षा के प्रमुख अंग क्या होने चाहिए? आज के बच्चे, आज की शिक्षा पाने के बाद, किस प्रकार के नागरिक बनेंगे?
आज ज़रूरत यह है कि बच्चे और वयस्क ऐसी शिक्षा पाएँ कि वे आपस में एक-दूसरे के नज़दीक होने के साथ-साथ सारे समाज से जुड़ें और सारी मानव जाति एक होकर समता और आत्मीयता से पूर्ण जीवन बिताए।
पुस्तक के लेखक का मानना है कि हम कला और उद्योग को शिक्षा-पद्धति का केन्द्र बनाएँ, क्योंकि वह हमारे समाज को सन्तुलित करने का काम कर सकती है। देवी प्रसाद का यह विचार उनकी उस आन्तरिक समझ से सम्बन्ध रखता है जो तथाकथित आधुनिकता के विकास से जुड़ी हुई है। वे कहते हैं कि व्यक्ति की सृजनात्मकता का ख़ात्मा आज की शिक्षा-व्यवस्था के द्वारा हुआ है जिसने हमें अत्यन्त भयानक और अवसरवादी अवस्था में डाल दिया है।
हमारे समाज में निचले तबक़े के लोगों के लिए कुछ भी ऐसा बाक़ी नहीं रहता जिसकी कोई अहमियत हो। यह इसलिए क्योंकि निर्णय वे लेते हैं जो समाज के ‘पिरामिड’ की चोटी पर विराजमान हैं। इसलिए यह पुस्तक उस पिरामिड को सीधा करने की कोशिश करती है। यह आधुनिकता की व्याख्या को भी बदलने का प्रयास करती है।
यह कहना यथेष्ट होगा कि यह पुस्तक उन लोगों के लिए है जो हमारे पूरे संसार की चिन्ता करते हैं, केवल शिक्षा-व्यवस्था की नहीं। यह एक ऐसे व्यक्ति के लम्बे अनुभव और विचारों को दर्शाती है जो शान्तिवाद की मुहिम में प्रत्यक्ष रूप से लगा हुआ था।

- Description: नवजागरण अपने राष्ट्रीय जागरण व सुधारवादी आन्दोलन के दौरान अनेक सार्थक प्रयासों और अपनी सफलताओं के लिए जाना जाता है। यह वही दौर था जब साम्राज्य विरोधी चेतना एक विराट राष्ट्रीय आन्दोलन का रूप ले चुकी थी, और राष्ट्रवाद अपने पूरे उफान पर था। मगर बावजूद इसके यह दौर अनेक विडम्बनाओं और विरोधाभासों के साथ-साथ कई विवादों का जन्मदाता भी रहा है। सबसे बड़ी विडम्बना इसकी यह रही कि दलित-प्रश्न और स्त्री-लेखन इसके परिदृश्य से पूरी तरह ग़ायब रहे। विशेषकर स्त्री-मुक्ति की छटपटाहट और चिन्ता इसके चिन्तन के केन्द्र में जैसे रहे ही नहीं। स्त्री-शिक्षा के अभाव और पितृसत्तात्मक व्यवस्था की गहरी पैठ के चलते, यह छटपटाहट हिन्दी साहित्य के इस दौर के इतिहास में अपनी उपस्थिति दर्ज कराने से वंचित रह गई। बाद में इस काल के साहित्यिक परिदृश्य और विशेषताओं को हिन्दी के अनेक महानायकों ने रेखांकित और विश्लेषित किया, लेकिन उनकी नज़रों से भी यह छटपटाहट अलक्षित और ओझल ही रही। इन महानायकों के सामने पुरुषों द्वारा रचित वही लेखन रहा, जिसके कारण हिन्दी नवजागरण को अतिशयोक्ति में कभी-कभी ‘हिन्दू नवजागरण’ भी कहा जाता है। ऐसे में यह प्रश्न उठना स्वाभाविक है कि हिन्दी नवजागरण के शुरुआत से लेकर आधुनिक काल (द्विवेदी युग) का पूरा कालखंड स्त्री-लेखन (स्त्रियों द्वारा किया गया लेखन) रहित रहा है? आख़िर ऐसे कौन से कारण थे जिनके चलते स्त्री-लेखन के रूप में, जो भी लेखन प्रकाश में आया, वह पुरुषों द्वारा ही किया गया लेखन था? ये ऐसे प्रश्न हैं जो हिन्दी साहित्य में बड़ी बहस की माँग करते हैं। बड़ी इसलिए कि यह मात्र एक धारणा या भ्रामक प्रचार है कि हिन्दी नवजागरण और उसके बाद के कुछ दशकों के दौरान स्त्री-लेखन नहीं हुआ। ‘अबलाओं का इन्साफ़’ (1927) को इसके उदाहरण के रूप में देखा जा सकता है। यह आत्मकथा गम्भीर स्त्री-प्रश्नों के साथ-साथ उस पुरुषवादी मानसिकता और सोच को पूरी निर्ममता के साथ बेपर्दा और उनके ऊपर जमी गर्द को पोंछती है, जिसे या तो जानबूझकर पोंछा नहीं गया या किसी कारणवश छोड़ दिया गया।

शरीर की आवश्यकता से अधिक कैलोरी वाला या अधिक चर्बीयुक्त भोजन वज़न बढ़ाने में सहायक होता है। यहाँ तक कि केवल 20 ग्राम वाला एक ब्रेड का टुकड़ा यदि अतिरिक्त मात्रा में रोज़ खाया जाए तो वह वज़न बढ़ा सकता है। इसी तरह 20 मिनट पैदल चलनेवाला व्यक्ति कार से जाने लगे या पैदल चलना छोड़ दे तो भी उसका वज़न बढ़ सकता है। दस वर्षों के दौरान ली गई अतिरिक्त 48 किलो कैलोरी से 20 किलो चर्बी शरीर में जमा हो सकती है। बच्चों में चाकलेट और फास्ट-फूड खाने की आदतें भी वज़न बढ़ाने में सहायक होती हैं। आए दिन होनेवाली पार्टियों में जानेवाले लोग अकसर ज़रूरत से ज़्यादा खा जाते हैं, यह अधिक खाना उनका वज़न बढ़ाने में सहायक होता है। कुछ लोग तनाव या समस्याओं के कारण भी ज़्यादा खा जाते हैं। इसी तरह कई लोग अच्छे स्वाद के कारण भी अधिक भोजन करते हैं। कई लोगों में एक ग़लत धारणा प्रचलित है कि स्वस्थ रहने के लिए ख़ूब खाना चाहिए और फिर ख़ूब खानेवाली धारणा उन्हें मोटा बना देती है।
