‘विषय नर-नारी’ में बिमल मित्र ने जैसे लेखक होने की अपनी पहचान को भी बार-बार रेखांकित किया और जिया है। स्वतंत्र रूप से लेखन को ही अपना जीवन-ध्येय बनानेवाले उस ज़माने के ऐसे लेखकों की रचनाएँ स्वयं लेखन की प्रतिष्ठा हैं जिससे जनसाधारण पाठक के रूप में एक सजीव उपस्थिति की तरह जुड़ा रहता था। इस लिहाज़ से भी साहित्य की थाती में सुरक्षित ऐसी रचनाओं को

उन्होंने कई बार पुरस्कारों और सम्मानों को लेने से इनकार किया, क्योंकि वह उन्हें लेखक होने की हैसियत से ज़रूरी लगा। उन्होंने दशकों-दशक एक सम्पूर्ण रचना के अवतरण की धैर्यपूर्वक प्रतीक्षा की, क्योंकि लेखक होने की उनकी अपनी कसौटी बहुत ऊँची और कठोर रही। लेखक के रूप में अपने युवा दिनों में ही उन्होंने अपने पहले और बड़े उपन्यास को एक प्रतिष्ठित प्रकाशक से छपाई के बीच में ही इसलिए वापस ले लिया कि उन्हें अपनी भाषा से खिलवाड़ स्वीकार नहीं था। उन्होंने जीवन के लगभग तीन दशक कॉपीराइट की सुरक्षा के लिए लोकप्रियता और राजनीतिक पहुँच की धनी ताक़तों से अकेले अदालती लड़ाई लड़ी।

इस पुस्तक में हमने उनके कुछ चुनिन्दा साक्षात्कारों को संकलित किया है जो अलग-अलग कालखंडों में अलग-अलग आयु और भिन्न अनुशासनों के लेखकों, पत्रकारों और विचारकों ने उनसे किए। पाठक इन्हें पढ़कर स्वयं महसूस करेगा कि साहित्य की, लेखक की और नागरिक की मुकम्मल तस्वीर कैसे बनती है।
