धरती पर जीवन की कड़ियों को जोड़नेवाला अनमोल पानी ग़ायब होने की कगार पर है। पानी पर लिखी ये चन्द बातें एक स्मरण पत्र भी हैं और चेतावनी भी। स्मरण हमारी नायाब जल परम्पराओं का, जल संरक्षण के बेजोड़ तरीक़ों का और जीवन से जुड़े पानी के अनेक प्रसंगों का। याद करें पानी से जुड़े संस्कारों और पग-पग पर पानी की बातों को। दर्जनों सरकारी महकमों, सैकड़ों संगठनों, हज़ारों आन्दोलनों और लाखों लोगों के जल संरक्षण के प्रयास खरे नहीं उतर पाए, क्योंकि उन प्रयासों में न ज़िद थी, न जुनून और न जुझारूपन। आज भारत के अधिकांश हिस्से जलसंकट की गिरफ़्त में हैं। देश की आबादी 120 करोड़ पहुँच चुकी है, साथ ही जलस्रोत घटकर एक-चौथाई पर आ सिकुड़े हैं। देश और दुनिया की बढ़ती विकास दर का पानी से सीधा ताल्लुक़ है। यदि पानी न रहा तो हमारे समूचे विकास पर ही पानी फिर सकता है। इस पुस्तक में लिखी बातें पानी को लेकर लेखक की चिन्ताएँ हैं, कोशिश है यह सबकी चिन्ता हो। ऐसा भी नहीं कि पानी की बातें पहले नहीं कही गई होंगी, ज़रूर कही गई होंगी, पर अब वक़्त के इस दौर में इसके मायने अहम हैं। भारतीय समाज, पानी से गहरे जुड़ा समाज था। हमारी परम्पराएँ, संस्कार, रीति-रिवाज और आदतें पानी से जुड़ी थीं। दुर्भाग्य से यह उत्कृष्ट परम्परा टूटकर बिखर गई और आज हम एक भयावह भविष्य के सामने खड़े हैं। यह पुस्तक इसी आसन्न संकट के मद्देनज़र हमें जगाने की कोशिश है।

Very few English novels are available about the North East, written especially by those who are from other regions of India. Why? Is it that this part of the country does not attract the thoughts and minds of the readers? It is indeed a sad commentary that so far not many of us have attempted to gain insight into the lives and living of our brethren who are our own countrymen. My humble effort in 'A Soldier's Dilemma' has been to narrate a story in which a lady soldier, the main protagonist is in search of her father, a scientist. Right from her childhood the girl has been empowered by her parents to meet and face challenges with aplomb and fortitude. Will she succeed now? It is a racy, suspenseful novel filled with action and intrigue. All the events take place in Nagaland with the brave men and women of this beautiful and refreshingly touching region actively participating in them. Having had the opportunity to serve in almost all remote regions in the country, my two year stint in Nagaland convinced me that they do require far more of our attention with affection.

ग़ुलामी भले ही विदा हो गई हो, जाति तो मुसलमानों में क़ायम है ही। उदाहरण के लिए, बंगाल के मुसलमानों की स्थिति को लिया जा सकता है। 1901 के लिए बंगाल प्रान्त के जनगणना अधीक्षक ने बंगाल के मुसलमानों के बारे में यह रोचक तथ्य दर्ज किए हैं—‘मुसलमानों का चार वर्गों—शेख़़, सैयद, मुग़ल और पठान—में परम्परागत विभाजन इस प्रान्त (बंगाल) में प्रायः लागू नहीं है। मुसलमान दो मुख्य सामाजिक विभक्त मानते हैं—1. अशराफ़ अथवा शरफ़ और 2. अज़लाफ़। अशराफ़ से तात्पर्य है ‘कुलीन’ और इसमें विदेशियों के वंशज तथा ऊँची जाति के धर्मान्तरित हिन्दू शामिल हैं। व्यावसायिक वर्ग और निचली जातियों के धर्मान्तरित शेष अन्य मुसलमान अज़लाफ़ अर्थात नीच अथवा निकृष्ट व्यक्ति माने जाते हैं। उन्हें कमीना अथवा इतर कमीना या रासिल, जो ‘रिज़ाल’ का भ्रष्ट रूप है, बेकार कहा जाता है। कुछ स्थानों पर एक तीसरा वर्ग ‘अरज़ाल’ भी है, जिसमें आनेवाले व्यक्ति सबसे नीच समझे जाते हैं। उनके साथ कोई भी अन्य मुसलमान मिलेगा-जुलेगा नहीं और न उन्हें मस्जिद और सार्वजनिक क़ब्रिस्तानों में प्रवेश करने दिया जाता है।

इन वर्गों में भी हिन्दू में प्रचलित जैसी सामाजिक वरीयता और जातियाँ हैं।...

मुसलमानों में इन बुराइयों का होना दु:खद है, किन्तु उससे भी अधिक दु:खद तथ्य यह है कि भारत के मुसलमानों में समाज-सुधार हेतु इन बुराइयों के सफलतापूर्वक उन्मूलन के लिए कोई संगठित आन्दोलन नहीं उभरा।...दूसरी ओर, मुसलमान यह महसूस ही नहीं करते कि ये बुराइयाँ हैं। परिणामतः वे उनके निवारण हेतु सक्रियता भी नहीं दर्शाते। इसके विपरीत, अपनी मौजूदा प्रथाओं में किसी भी परिवर्तन का विरोध करते हैं।

Annihilation of Caste is an undelivered speech written in 1936 by B. R. Ambedkar, an Indian academic turned politician. He wrote Annihilation of Caste for the 1936 meeting of a group of liberal Hindu caste reformers in Lahore. After reviewing the speech’s controversiality, conference organizers revoked Ambedkar’s invitation. He then self-published the work. The work is considered a classic and is being re-evaluated time and again.

भारतीय संस्कृति सदैव पर्यावरण की पोषक रही है। इसमें पर्यावरण के अवयव तथा जल, आकाश, सूर्य, चन्द्र, वनस्पति एवं कतिपय जीव-जन्तुओं को पूज्य मानने की मान्यताएँ रही हैं जो पर्यावरण के 'संरक्षण से जुड़ी हैं। पर्यावरण का सम्बन्ध केवल संस्कृति से ही नहीं है अपितु संस्कारों तथा सरोकारों से भी है। हमारी संस्कृति में स्वच्छता को भक्ति का स्थान दिया गया है। वृक्ष, वन एवं वनस्पति पृथ्वी के आभूषण और प्रकृति के उपहार हैं और धरती तो माँ है। जब तक मानव प्रकृति का भाग रहता है, प्रकृति उनका संरक्षण करती है। प्रकृति स्वतः पेड़ लगाती रहती है, हमें तो उनका संरक्षण करना है। इस कृति के द्वारा पर्यावरण संरक्षण के प्रति चेतना जगाने का प्रयास किया गया है।

Field Marshal Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw, fondly known as Sam Bahadur, was one of the greatest war heroes and military leaders India has produced. He became a household name in India and was hailed as a legendary soldier and an inspiration to his fellow citizens for crafting India's greatest military victory in the 1971 Indo-Pak war as Chief of Staff (1969-73) of the Indian armed forces. Spanning four decades, he served the country gloriously through five wars—World War II, The Indo-Pakistani War of Partition (1947), the Sino-Indian War (1962), and the India-Pakistan wars (1965 and 1971). The first Indian Army officer to be promoted to the five-star rank of Field Marshal, Sam Bahadur continues to be the most admired war hero of our army chiefs. He will remain an example of self-sacrifice, personal bravery, and steadfast devotion to duty that began before India's independence, and will deservedly live in the annals of the military history of India forever.
