आज हिन्दी आलोचना में जो पारिभाषिक शब्द प्रचलित हैं, उनके मुख्यतः तीन स्रोत हैं। उनमें सबसे प्रमुख स्रोत हमारा संस्कृत काव्यशास्त्र है, जिसकी समृद्धि तद्युगीन विश्वसाहित्य में अतुलनीय है। हिन्दी आलोचना की समृद्धि के पीछे उसकी अपनी यही विरासत है। दूसरा स्रोत यूरोप का साहित्यशास्त्र है, जिससे हमारे लगभग साढ़े तीन सौ वर्ष से सम्बन्ध हैं। पिछले कुछ दशकों में उदारीकरण और भूमंडलीकरण के चलते यूरोप से अनेक नए पारिभाषिक शब्द हिन्दी में आए हैं, जिन्हें हिन्दी ने पूरी उदारता से ग्रहण किया है। इसी के साथ हिन्दी आलोचना ने अनेक शब्द स्वयं भी विकसित किए हैं।
इस समृद्धि के बावजूद हिन्दी आलोचना में प्रचलित बहुतेरे पारिभाषिक शब्दों की अवधारणा को रेखांकित करनेवाली पुस्तक की कमी लगातार महसूस की जा रही थी। समकालीन हिन्दी आलोचना की इस अनिवार्य आवश्यकता को पूरी करनेवाली यह अकेली पुस्तक है—हिन्दी साहित्य के सुधी अध्येताओं के लिए अनिवार्यतः संग्रहणीय।
