मुक्तिबोध की कविताओं के बारे में यदि शमशेर बहादुर सिंह के शब्दों में कहें तो उनकी ‘कविता, अद्भुत संकेतों-भरी, जिज्ञासाओं से अस्थिर—कभी दूर से ही शोर मचाती, कभी कानों में चुपचाप राज़ की बातें कहती चलती है। हमारी बातें हमीं को सुनाती है और हम अपने को एकदम चकित होकर देखते हैं, और पहले से और भी अधिक पहचानने लगते हैं।’
और मुक्तिबोध समग्र के रूप में, ‘हमारी बातें हमीं को’ सुनानेवाली उनकी कविताओं का यह पहला खंड है। इसमें 1935 से लेकर 1956-57 तक की कविताएँ हैं जिनमें प्रारम्भिक काव्य-प्रयासों से लगाकर आधुनिक हिन्दी-कविता में अपना अलग, निजी मुहावरा हासिल कर लेने तक मुक्तिबोध के काव्य-व्यक्तित्व के विकास के सभी चरण एक साथ मौजूद हैं। साथ ही परवर्ती लेखन में अनुभव और सृजन सम्बन्धी जिन उलझनों, अन्तर्द्वन्द्वों और उनकी अभिव्यक्ति का सशक्त और अनोखा रूप सामने आया, उसकी शुरुआत भी प्रारम्भिक रचनाओं तथा तार सप्तककालीन कविताओं में साफ़ देखी जा सकती है। इस दृष्टि से यह खंड मुक्तिबोध-काव्य के प्रेमी पाठकों के लिए निस्सन्देह एक नया अनुभव होगा।

वास्तव में संगीत के प्रसंग से पाण्डे ने इस किताब में सामाजिक-सांस्कृतिक इतिहास की उस दरार पर रोशनी डाली है, जिसका भरना अब तक बाक़ी है। उन्होंने बेहद आत्मीयता से तमाम प्रसंगों का उल्लेख किया है, जिससे पुस्तक ने अकादमिक विवेचना के बजाय एक दिलचस्प अनौपचारिक पाठ की शक्ल ले ली है। ज़ाहिर है, यह पाठक के दिल को छू लेती है।
