- Description: रघुवीर सहाय (1929–90) का एक रूप आधुनिक मिज़ाज के प्रतिनिधि का है, दूसरा आधुनिकता के समीक्षक का। उनके रचना-जगत को इन दोनों रूपों में देखना और इन रूपों के बीच एक अँधेरा–सा छोड़ देना आसान भी है, उचित भी। आसान इस कारण है कि आधुनिक मिज़ाज और उसकी अभिव्यक्ति के पर्याय समझे जानेवाले लक्षण रघुवीर सहाय के जीवनवृत्त में उतनी ही सुविधा से पहचाने जा सकते हैं, जितनी सुविधा से हम इन पर्यायों की कठोर नैतिक जाँच रघुवीर सहाय के लेखन कविता और गद्य, दोनों में ढूँढ़ सकते हैं। उचित इसलिए है क्योंकि निरे तार्किक विश्लेषण और उसके आधार पर फ़ैसला ले लेने या सुना देने की प्रवृत्ति से सचेत होकर बचने की चिन्ता रघुवीर सहाय की रचनाओं में गहरे बैठी दिखाई देती है। विश्वास के साथ दुविधा और भय रघुवीर सहाय का प्रतिनिधि स्वभाव है। इसीलिए उन्हें आधुनिकता का प्रतिनिधि और समीक्षक, दोनों कहना सही है। सम्प्रभु राज्य और लोकतंत्र आधुनिकता की इन दो सबसे विराट संरचनाओं को रघुवीर सहाय ने प्रसार माध्यमों के ज़रिए ही सबसे ज़्यादा जाना। इन संरचनाओं के चरित्र और बल से आकार लेते हुए सामाजिक इतिहास में रघुवीर सहाय की अपनी हिस्सेदारी मुख्यत: पत्रकारिता के माध्यम से सम्पन्न हुई। ‘दिनमान’ साप्ताहिक को एक प्रसार–माध्यम से ज़्यादा संवाद–माध्यम बनाना निश्चय ही उनके पेशेवर जीवन का सबसे बड़ा संघर्ष था। रघुवीर सहाय के काव्य का एक बड़ा और महत्त्वपूर्ण हिस्सा इस संघर्ष की पृष्ठभूमि में समझे जाने पर ही खुलता है।

- Description: "जलियाँवाला बाग में हुआ नर-संहार इतिहास का अटूट अंग है। उस दिन हजारों निःशस्त्र भारतीयों का नृशंस रक्तपात हुआ। उसके बाद मार्शल लॉ आरोपित हुआ। यदि जलियाँवाला बाग कांड फाँसी के सदृश था तो उसके बाद का अध्याय कालापानी से कम नहीं था। वह कुकांड भारत के आधुनिक इतिहास का एक ऐसा प्रकरण है, जिसे सरलता से भुलाया नहीं जा सकता, भूलना भी नहीं चाहिए। कालापानी की तरह इसकी याद भी हमारी एक दुखनेवाली नस को निरंतर दबाती है। जलियाँवाला बाग नर-संहार तो एक विरला ही दुःख है। यद्यपि इस विषय पर अंग्रेजी में थोड़ा-बहुत लिखा गया है; परंतु हिंदी व प्रांतीय भाषाओं के लेखकों का ध्यान इस कांड से संबद्ध प्रकरणों अथवा उनके विवेचन की ओर शायद ही गया हो। किंतु हिंदी में पहली बार यह काम किया गया है। अंग्रेजों ने इस नर-संहार की घटना पर परदा डालने के जी-तोड़ प्रयत्न किए। और इसमें वे पूर्णतया असफल भी नहीं रहे। कालांतर में जो थोड़ा-बहुत लिखा गया, वह अंग्रेजी कलम से था। कई तथ्यों का पता स्वतंत्रता के दशकों पश्चात् लगा। उन्हीं तथ्यों को इस पुस्तक में समग्रता के साथ प्रस्तुत किया जा रहा है। पाठकगण इसमें दी गई अनेक उत्पीड़क एवं रोमांचकारी घटनाओं तथा विवरणों को चाव से पढ़कर उनमें निहित मर्म को विचारोत्पादक पाएँगे। "
