आधुनिक भारत में जो शीर्षस्थानीय दार्शनिक हुए हैं, उनमें डॉ. दया कृष्ण का विशेष स्थान है। उन्होंने पश्चिमी दर्शनशास्त्र के गहन अध्येता के रूप में शुरुआत की थी पर बाद में उन्होंने भारतीय दार्शनिक और बौद्धिक परम्परा में गहरी पैठ बनाई। उन्होंने अनेक भारतीय विचारों और सिद्धान्तों पर पुनर्विचार किया, कुछ का बदली हुई परिस्थिति में पुनराविष्कार किया। उन्होंने निरी नई व्याख्या से हटकर कई नई जिज्ञासाएँ विन्यस्त कीं और कई पुराने प्रश्नों के नए उत्तर खोजने का दुस्साहस किया। सभ्यताओं और संस्कृतियों के बीच सम्बन्ध और अन्तर पर उन्होंने नई गम्भीरता से विचार किया और उन्हें लेकर इतिहास-लेखन के लिए कुछ मौलिक प्रस्तावना की। हिन्दी में निरन्तर क्षीण हो गई विचार-परम्परा में यह हिन्दी अनुवाद समृद्ध विस्तार करेगा, ऐसी आशा है।

"स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के क्रांतिदूत नेताजी सुभाषचंद्र बोस का जन्म 23 जनवरी, 1897 को उड़ीसा के कटक शहर में हुआ था। बचपन से ही सुभाष पढ़ाई में बडे़ कुशाग्र बुद्धि के थे। इंग्लैंड से पढ़ाई करके लौटने पर सुभाष कलकत्ता के प्रसिद्ध स्वतंत्रता सेनानी देशबंधु चित्तरंजन दास के साथ काम करना चाहते थे। उन दिनों गांधीजी ने अंग्रेजों के खिलाफ असहयोग आंदोलन छेड़ रखा था। उनके साथ सुभाष बाबू उस आंदोलन में सहभागी हो गए और जल्द ही देश के एक महत्त्वपूर्ण युवा नेता बन गए। सन् 1928 में जब साइमन कमीशन भारत आया तो कलकत्ता में सुभाष बाबू ने इस आंदोलन का नेतृत्व किया। सुभाष बाबू गांधीजी और कांग्रेस के तौर-तरीकों से असहमत थे। गांधीजी के विरोध के बावजूद वे कांग्रेस के अध्यक्ष चुने गए, पर कार्यकारिणी का सहयोग न मिलने पर उन्होंने त्याग-पत्र दे दिया। नजरबंदी में ब्रिटिश सरकार की आँखों में धूल झोंककर वे जापान पहुँचे और आजाद हिंद फौज की स्थापना की। उन्होंने नारा दिया—‘तुम मुझे खून दो, मैं तुम्हें आजादी दूँगा।’ उन्होंने भारत की आजादी के लिए सशस्त्र संघर्ष किया। सुभाष की राष्ट्रभक्ति बेमिसाल है। उनकी मृत्यु के बारे में अभी तक रहस्य बना हुआ है। कहा जाता है कि 23 अगस्त, 1945 को उनका विमान दुर्घटनाग्रस्त हो गया था। राष्ट्रनायक सुभाष बाबू आज भी अदम्य प्रेरणा के स्रोत हैं।

भारत की आध्यात्मिकता तथा पश्चिम की विज्ञान और तकनीक—इन दोनों के समन्वय से आनेवाले समय में एक नए भारत का निर्माण होगा, इस दिशा में महान् युगप्रवर्तक स्वामी विवेकानंद ने जोर दिया। ऐसा करना है, तो युवा और आनेवाली पीढ़ी के मानस में परिवर्तन करना होगा। अगर भारत वर्ष का उत्थान करना है तो सबसे पहले भारत के विभिन्न घटकों पर विश्वास आवश्यक है—अपनी धरती पर, अपनी परंपराओं पर, अपनी संस्कृति पर, अपने गौरवशाली अतीत पर। यह एक प्रखर संदेश हमें स्वामीजी से प्राप्त होता है। एक बात उन्होंने हमेशा कही कि एक नया भारत खड़ा हो रहा है। स्वामी विवेकानंद ने युवकों से यह भी अपेक्षा रखी थी—क्या तुम्हें अपने देश से प्रेम है? यदि हाँ, तो आओ, हम लोग उच्चता और उन्नति के मार्ग पर प्रयत्नशील हों। पीछे मुडक़र, मत देखो।

अपने समय के कुछ मूर्धन्य लेखकों, चित्रकारों और संगीतकारों के साथ बातचीत करने का अवसर मिलना हर तरह से सौभाग्य कहा जाएगा। ऐसी बातचीत में अकसर किसी व्यक्ति की जि‍न्‍दगी, दृष्टि, उलझनों और उत्सुकताओं के अनेक अनजाने पहलुओं से साक्षात् हो पाता है। इनमें से अधिकांश साक्षात्कार ‘आलोचना’ (त्रैमासिक) और ‘पूर्वग्रह’ में प्रकाशित हुए थे। उनका शुरू से ही आग्रह अनौपचारिक आलोचना को भी जगह देने का था और ये उसी का हिस्सा थे। तब जानबूझकर बातचीत का स्वाद बनाए रखने के लिए उसे लगभग जस का तस दे दिया जाता था। इतने बरसों बाद अब शायद इसलिए कहीं-कहीं अटपटापन लगे, पर उस समय के स्वाद का भी पता चले, इसलिए उस सामग्री में नोक-पलक सुधारने की कोशिश नहीं के बराबर की गई है। कई बार बातचीत मैंने अकेले नहीं की है। उसमें नामवर सिंह, विजयदेव नारायण साही, रमेशचन्द्र शाह, राहुल बारपुते, भगवत रावत, गीता कपूर, मंगलेश डबराल, उदय प्रकाश, सुदीप बनर्जी, सत्येन कुमार, ज्योत्स्ना मिलन, मदन सोनी, उदयन वाजपेयी भी शामिल थे। जो परिसंवाद शामिल किया गया है उसमें कुँवर नारायण, नेमिचन्द्र जैन, रघुवीर सहाय, कमलेश, जगदीश स्वामीनाथन, विजय मोहन सिंह भी शामिल थे। इन सभी के प्रति कृतज्ञता। उनकी शिरकत से कई बातचीतें अनेक दृष्टियों का समवाय भी बन पाई हैं। जिनसे बातचीत की गई थी उनमें से जैनेन्द्र कुमार, आचार्य हजारीप्रसाद द्विवेदी, शमशेर बहादुर सिंह, रघुवीर सहाय, निर्मल वर्मा, पण्डित कुमार गन्धर्व और चेस्लाव मीलोष अब इस संसार में नहीं हैं। पहली बातचीत 1976 की है और आखि़री 2006 की। अगर बातचीत को एक निजी विश्लेषण और आकलन मानें तो यह लगभग 30 वर्षों में फैला ऐसा दस्तावेज़ है जो उसे एकत्र करता है।—भूमिका से

नील आर्मस्ट्रांग पहले व्यक्‍त‌ि थे, जिन्होंने सर्वप्रथम चंद्रमा पर अपना कदम रखा। 5 अगस्त, 1930 को संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका के वापाकोनेटा, ओहियो में जनमे आर्मस्ट्रांग की रुचि शुरू से ही चंद्रमा, तारों और अंतरिक्ष में थी, इसलिए उन्होंने इसी को अपने कॅरियर के रूप में अपनाया। कुछ समय नौसेना में काम करने के बाद सन् 1955 में उन्होंने नेशनल एडवाइजरी कमेटी फॉर एयरोनॉटिक्स (एन.ए.सी.ए.) में कार्यारंभ किया। इसी कमेटी का नाम बाद में ‘नासा’ (नेशनल एयरोनॉटिक्स एंड रचेश एडमिनिस्टे्रशन) पड़ा। 16 मार्च, 1966 को जैमिनी-8 अभियान के तहत वे पहले-पहल अंतरिक्ष में गए। इसके बाद अपोलो-2 में बतौर कमांडर वे चंद्रमा की सतह पर उतरे और इतिहास रच दिया। नील ऑर्मस्ट्रांग को सैकड़ों पुरस्कार व सम्मान मिले, लेकिन उनकी अंतरिक्ष जितनी ऊँची पहुँच के आगे वे सब गौण रहे। 82 वर्ष की आयु में 25 अगस्त, 2012 को दिल का दौरा पड़ने से उनका निधन हो गया। एक महान् अंतरिक्षयात्री के साहसपूर्ण, खोजपूर्ण और रोमांचक जीवन की पूरी बानगी है यह पुस्तक।
