अपनी क्रान्तिकारी एवं साम्राज्य विरोधी गतिविधियों के लिए पुलिस-मुठभेड़ के बाद यशपाल 23 जनवरी, 1932 को इलाहाबाद में गिरफ़्तार हुए। इसके लिए उन्हें आजीवन कारावास की सज़ा हुई। अपने कारावास के दौर में वे नैनी, सुल्तानपुर, बरेली, फतेहपुर आदि विभिन्न जेलों में रहे। राजनीतिक बन्दी होने से बी क्लास की सुविधाओं के कारण, जीवन की कोई विशेष आशा न होने पर भी, उन्होंने अपने इस समय को पढ़ने-लिखने और विभिन्न भाषाएँ सीखने में लगाया। उन्होंने कहानियाँ लिखीं और पढ़ी गई सामग्री के विस्तृत नोट्स लिए। दोस्तोवस्की, जुलियस फ्युचिक, ग्राम्शी और भगत सिंह आदि की तरह जेल-जीवन में एक तरह से उनका अधिकतर समय इस रचनात्मक उद्यम में ही बीता। जेल-प्रवास का दौर यशपाल के लिए वस्तुतः ढेर सारे फ़ैसलों का दौर भी था। जीवित बाहर निकलने के बाद भविष्य की चिन्ता तो थी ही, यह भी तय करना था कि अब करना क्या है।
यशपाल की यह डायरी उनकी रचनात्मक तैयारी का साक्ष्य है। इसमें उन अनेक कहानियों का पहला ड्राफ़्ट मिलता है जो बाद में ‘पिंजरे की उड़ान’ और ‘वो दुनिया’ में संकलित की गई। इस सामग्री में महात्मा गांधी की अहिंसा और सत्याग्रह, लेनिन की राजनीतिक पद्धति और फ़्रायड के मनोविश्लेषण जैसे परस्पर-विरोधी विचार-सरणियों तक पहुँचने और चीज़ों को देखने, समझने की यशपाल की चिन्ता को देखा जा सकता है। कुल मिलाकर यह सारी सामग्री उनकी उस रचनात्मक बेचैनी का साक्ष्य है जिससे उबरकर ही वे एक पत्रकार और लेखक के रूप में अपना रूपान्तरण करते हैं। इन्हें उनके जीवन के समान्तर रखकर पढ़ा जा सकता है। ये सिर्फ़ कुछ उदाहरण हैं कि यशपाल की यह जेल-डायरी उन्हें कैसे एक बेहतर रूप में समझने का अवसर देती है।

राजकपूर, नेहरू युग के प्रतिनिधि फ़िल्मकार माने जाते हैं, जैसे कि शास्त्री-युग के मनोज कुमार। इन्दिरा गांधी के युग के मनमोहन देसाई और प्रकाश मेहरा।
आज़ाद भारत के साथ ही राजकपूर की सृजन-यात्रा भी शुरू होती है। उन्होंने 6 जुलाई, 1947 को ‘आग’ का मुहूर्त किया था और 6 जुलाई, 1948 को ‘आग’ प्रदर्शित हुई थी। भारत की आज़ादी जब उफक पर खड़ी थी और सहर होने को थी, तब राजकपूर ने अपनी पहली फ़िल्म बनाई थी। ‘आग’ आज़ादी की अलसभोर की फ़िल्म थी, जब ग़ुलामी का अँधेरा हटने को था और आज़ादी की पहली किरण आने को थी। ‘आग’ में भारत की व्याकुलता है, जो सदियों की ग़ुलामी तोड़कर अपने सपनों को साकार करना चाहता है। राजकपूर की आख़िर फ़िल्म ‘राम तेरी गंगा मैली’ 15 अगस्त, 1985 को प्रदर्शित हुई। इस फ़िल्म में राजकपूर ने उस कुचक्र को उजागर किया है, जो कहता है कि पैसे से सत्ता मिलती है और सत्ता से पैसा पैदा होता है। इस तरह राजकपूर ने अपनी पहली फ़िल्म ‘आग’ से लेकर अन्तिम फ़िल्म ‘राम तेरी गंगा मैली’ तक भारत के जनमानस के प्रतिनिधि फ़िल्मकार की भूमिका निभाई है।
यह राजकपूर जैसे जागरूक फ़िल्मकार का ही काम था कि सन् 1954 और 56 में उसने भारतीय समाज का पूर्वानुमान लगा लिया था और भ्रष्टाचार के नंगे नाच के लिए लोगों को तैयार कर दिया था। ‘जागते रहो’ के समय उनके साथियों ने इस शुष्क विषय से बचने की सलाह दी थी और स्वयं राजकपूर भी परिणाम के प्रति शंकित थे। परन्तु सिनेमा के इस प्रेमी का दिल उस गम्भीर विषय पर आ गया था। जो लोग राजकपूर को काइयाँ व्यापारी मात्र मानते रहे हैं, उन्हें सोचना चाहिए कि बिना नायिका और रोमांटिक एंगल की फ़िल्म ‘जागते रहो’ राजकपूर ने क्यों बनाई?
राजकपूर और आम आदमी का रिश्ता सभी परिभाषाओं से परे एक प्रेमकथा है, जिसमें आज़ाद भारत की दास्तान है। राजकपूर की साढ़े अठारह फ़िल्में आम आदमी के नाम लिखे प्रेम-पत्र हैं। सारा जीवन राजकपूर ने प्रेम के ‘ढाई आखर’ को समझने और समझाने की कोशिश की। राजकपूर भारतीय सिनेमा के कबीर हैं।
राजकपूर का पहला प्यार औरत से था या सिनेमा से—यह प्रश्न उतना ही उलझा हुआ है, जितना कि पहले मुर्ग़ी हुई या अंडा।
उनके लिए प्रेम करना कविता लिखने की तरह था। प्रेम, औरत और प्रकृति के प्रति राजकपूर का दृष्टिकोण छायावादी कवियों की तरह था। औरत के जिस्म के रहस्य से ज़्यादा रुचि राजकपूर को उसके मन की थी। वह यह भी जानते थे कि कन्दराओं की तरह गहन औरत के मन की थाह पाना मुश्किल है, परन्तु प्रयत्न परिणाम से ज़्यादा आनन्ददायी था।
प्रेम और प्रेम में हँसना-रोना, राजकपूर की प्रथम प्रेरणा थी, तो सृजन-शक्ति का दूसरा स्रोत उनकी अदम्य महत्त्वाकांक्षा थी। ‘आग’ के नायक की तरह राजकपूर जीवन में कुछ असाधारण कर गुज़रना चाहते थे। जलती हुई-सी महत्त्वाकांक्षा उनका ईंधन बनी।
पृथ्वीराज उनकी प्रेरणा के तीसरे स्रोत रहे हैं। उन्हें अपने पिता के प्रति असीम श्रद्धा थी और वे हमेशा ऐसे कार्य करना चाहते थे, जिनसे उनके पिता की गरिमा बढ़े।
ऐसे थे राजकपूर और यह है उनकी प्रामाणिक और सम्पूर्ण जीवनगाथा।

ज़ोहरा सहगल की यह आत्मकथा मंच और फ़िल्मी पर्दे पर उनकी लगभग सौ साल लम्बी मौजूदगी का एक बड़ा फलक पेश करती है। भारत और इंग्लैंड दोनों जगह समान रूप से सक्रिय रहीं ज़ोहरा सहगल इसमें अपने बचपन से लेकर अब तक की ज़िन्दगी का दिलचस्प ख़ाका खींचती हैं।
1930 में ज़ोहरा आपा ड्रेस्डेन, जर्मनी में मैरी विगमैन के डांस-स्कूल में आधुनिक नृत्य का प्रशिक्षण लेने के लिए गईं। नवाबों की पारिवारिक पृष्ठभूमि से आईं एक भारतीय युवती के लिए यह फ़ैसला अस्वाभाविक था। लेकिन कुछ अलग हटकर करने का नाम ज़ोहरा सहगल है। 1933 में वे वापस आईं और 1935 में उदयशंकर की अल्मोड़ा स्थित प्रसिद्ध नाट्य दल से जुड़ीं। कामेश्वर सहगल भी इसी कम्पनी में थे जिनसे 1942 में उनकी शादी हुई।
इस दौर के अपने सफ़र के बाद ज़ोहरा सहगल इस आत्मकथा में पृथ्वी थिएटर और पृथ्वीराज कपूर से जुड़े अपने लम्बे और गहरे अनुभव के दिनों का लेखा-जोखा देती हैं। पृथ्वी थिएटर में अपने चौदह साल उन्होंने भारतीय रंगमंच के एक महत्त्वपूर्ण अध्याय के बीचोबीच बिताए। इप्टा का बनना और फिर निष्क्रिय हो जाना भी उन्होंने नज़दीक से देखा। इस पूरे दौर का बहुत पास से लिया गया जायज़ा इस आत्मकथा में शामिल है।
इसके बाद इंग्लैंड में बीबीसी टेलीविज़न, ब्रिटिश ड्रामा लीग, और अनेक धारावाहिकों तथा फ़िल्मों के साथ अभिनेत्री के रूप में उनका जुड़ाव, और इस दौरान ब्रिटिश रंगमंच की महान हस्तियों से उनकी मुलाक़ातों के विवरण, ‘मुल्ला नसीरुद्दीन’ जैसे भारतीय धारावाहिकों में काम करने के अनुभव, इस आत्मकथा को एक ख़ास दिलचस्पी से पढ़े जाने की दावत देते हैं। साथ में ज़ोहरा आपा का चुटीला अन्दाज़, उसके तो कहने ही क्या!

उस्ताद विलायत ख़ाँ अप्रतिम सितार वादक थे। उनके बजाने-गाने की कई कथाएँ भी किंवदन्तियों की तरह प्रचलित हैं। वह ओज, सरसता, सूक्ष्मतम ध्वनि तरंगों और माधुर्य के धनी थे। जिन्होंने उनको सुना है—आमने-सामने बैठकर—वे तो उनके ‘बजाने की छवि’ को भी याद करते हैं, सिर्फ़ उनके सुरों को ही नहीं। यहाँ हम लेखक और संगीतविद् शंकरलाल भट्टाचार्य द्वारा मूल रूप से बांग्ला भाषा में उस्ताद विलायत ख़ाँ की आत्मकथा के तैयार किए गए वार्तालेख के साथ उन पर एकाग्र तीन आलेखों को सुपरिचित आलोचक और अनुवादक रामशंकर द्विवेदी के अनुवाद में प्रस्तुत कर रहे हैं। पहले दो आलेख, क्रमश: दो संगीत-पारखियों नीलाक्ष दत्त और आशीष चट्टोपाध्याय के हैं, तीसरा बांग्ला के विख्यात कवि जय गोस्वामी का है। तीनों आलेख अपने-अपने ढंग से विलायत ख़ाँ के सितार के गुणों को तो उभारते ही हैं, उनके व्यक्तित्व की भी एक झलक प्रस्तुत करते हैं। नीलाक्ष दत्त के आलेख में तो स्वयं विलायत ख़ाँ के सितार की बनावट-बुनावट, और उसे बजाने की तकनीक की भी चर्चा है। इन आलेखों में उन कई सामान्य श्रोताओं की भी एक मर्मभरी उपस्थिति है, जो मानो उनके सितार के पीछे 'पागल' ही तो थे।
सामान्य श्रोताओं से लेकर गुणी संगीत पारखियों, समीक्षकों, लेखकों-कवियों-कलाकारों, बुद्धिजीवियों तक में संगीत के प्रति यह जो अनुराग रहा है, वह इस आत्मकथा को पढ़कर भी जाना जा सकता है। कहना न होगा कि ‘कोमल गांधार' पठनीय ही नहीं, बल्कि संग्रहणीय पुस्तक भी है।

ऊँचे अधिकारी अपने इन्द्रासन से हटते ही किस प्रकार नगण्य हो जाते हैं, छोटे-छोटे दफ़्तरों के छोटे-छोटे अधिकारियों के हाथों किस प्रकार प्रताड़ना सहते हैं, मृत पति की पेंशन लेने किस प्रकार एक महिला को क़दम-क़दम पर हृदयहीन लालफ़ीताशाही का सामना करना पड़ता है, ये सब अनुभव मार्मिकता के साथ शिवानी के ‘वातायन’ में मिलते हैं। इनको निबन्ध की संज्ञा देने से इनका ठीक परिचय नहीं मिलता। ये झाँकियाँ हैं—केवल बाहरी नहीं, अन्तर की भी। लखनऊ के दैनिक ‘स्वतंत्र भारत’ में प्रति सप्ताह ‘वातायन’ को पढ़ने के लिए लोग कितने लालायित रहते हैं, इनको पढ़ने के बाद कितने फ़ोन और पत्र आते हैं लेखिका और सम्पादक दोनों के पास, यह इनकी लोकप्रियता का प्रमाण है।
शिवानी की प्रतिभा का यह नया आयाम है। इनमें गहरी पकड़ है जो उनकी कहानियों व उपन्यासों में मिलती है। साथ ही इनमें लेखिका के प्राचीन संस्कृत साहित्य के ज्ञान और सुसंस्कृत व्यक्तित्व का भी पुट है। इनसे हिन्दी पत्रकारिता में स्तम्भ-लेखन का स्तर ऊँचा हुआ है। अंग्रेज़ी में चार्ल्स डिकेंस, मार्क ट्वेन, रडयार्ड किपलिंग, चेस्टर्टन आदि के उत्कृष्ट निबन्ध और कथाएँ समाचार-पत्रों के माध्यम से ही पहली बार प्रस्तुत हुई थीं। हिन्दी की पत्र-पत्रिकाएँ विविध और विशाल पाठक वर्ग तक पहुँचती हैं और लेखक को नियमित और रेडीमेड श्रोता-मंडल देती हैं, परन्तु पत्र-पत्रिकाएँ एक बार पढ़कर फेंक दी जाती हैं, जबकि पुस्तकें साथ रहती हैं। ‘वातायन’ में शिवानी ने साहित्य-निधि दी है।
