- Description: ज्योतिष शब्द का नाम आते ही हमारा ध्यान भाग्यफल या फलित ज्योतिष की ओर जाता है। आज टी.वी. चैनलों और अख़बारों में ज्योतिष विद्या और ज्योतिषियों की बाढ़ आई हुई है। लोग सड़क पर, मन्दिर में बैठे ज्योतिषियों से अपने भविष्य और भाग्य का पता लगाते रहते हैं। इस तरह लोक-व्यवहार में, ज्योतिष का अर्थ हो गया है—फलित ज्योतिष, यानी ग्रह-नक्षत्रों के शुभाशुभ फल बतानेवाली विद्या। परन्तु आरम्भ में इस शब्द का यह अर्थ नहीं था। वस्तुत: ज्योतिष खगोल विज्ञान का हिस्सा है। यह सूर्यादि ग्रह और काल का बोध करानेवाला शास्त्र है। आदिमानव से लेकर आज तक मानव को काल-ज्ञान, स्थिति-ज्ञान और दिशा-ज्ञान की जिज्ञासा रही है। उसने इसी जिज्ञासा के समाधान के लिए प्रयत्न किया और इसी से ज्योतिष का उदय हुआ। आकाशीय ज्योतियों अर्थात् सूर्यादि नक्षत्रों तथा ग्रहों आदि की गतियों को जानना और उनकी गणना करना मुख्य रूप से इसके अन्तर्गत आता है। गुणाकर मुळे स्वयं खगोल विज्ञान के विद्यार्थी थे। नक्षत्रों और ग्रहों के बारे में उन्होंने गहन अध्ययन किया था। उन्होंने 'ज्योतिष : विकास, प्रकार और ज्योतिर्विद्’ पुस्तक में ज्योतिष के विकास-क्रम पर तो प्रकाश डाला ही है, ज्योतिष के वैज्ञानिक और तार्किक पक्ष को भी उभारा है। उन्होंने इस पुस्तक में यह भी स्थापित किया है कि फलित ज्योतिष अवैज्ञानिक और अभारतीय है।

- Description: पाश्चात्य विद्वान ऐसा बताते रहे हैं कि विज्ञान एवं टेक्नोलॉजी पाश्चात्य वस्तु है। इस दृष्टिकोण के अन्तर्गत यह ग्रीस में शुरू हुई और कुछ समय बाद पुन: यूरोप में प्रकट हुई, तब से जो उन्नति हुई वह मानव इतिहास में अद्वितीय है। उनके अनुसार, इस उन्नति से बाक़ी विश्व को लाभ हुआ है। वह आगे बताते हैं कि इस समय यूरोप इस ज्ञान को उन देशों में प्रसारित कर रहा है जिनमें इसे जज़्ब करने की क्षमता है। लेकिन आज हमें जो ऐतिहासिक साक्ष्य उपलब्ध हैं, वह इसके विरुद्ध हैं। इतिहास पर एक सरसरी नज़र दौड़ाने से यह स्पष्ट हो जाता है कि विज्ञान एवं टेक्नोलॉजी भारतीय संस्कृति के अंश और उसकी सभ्यता का आधार रहे हैं। अपने इतिहास के हर काल में भारतीयों ने विज्ञान एवं टेक्नोलॉजी में उल्लेखनीय योगदान दिया। यह ज्ञान पूर्णत: उपलब्ध था और विश्व के भिन्न भागों में और भिन्न संस्कृतियों में फैला। पूर्व में चीन और इंडोनेशिया, पश्चिमी एशिया, केन्द्रीय एशिया और यूरोप ने भारत से जो कुछ ग्रहण किया, उससे पर्याप्त लाभ उठाया। अन्धकार युग में और 12वीं से 18वीं सदी के सात सौ वर्षों की अवधि में भारत में संस्कृत, अरबी और फ़ारसी में विज्ञान एवं टेक्नोलॉजी पर दस हज़ार ग्रन्थ लिखे गए। यह फ़ेहरिस्त अन्तिम नहीं है। इसके अलावा इन भाषाओं और अन्य भारतीय भाषाओं में अनेक ग्रन्थ थे। इसलिए जो अब किया जा रहा है, वह उसी परम्परा का पुनरुद्धार है जिसे औपनिवेशिक राज में भंग कर दिया गया था। आज़ादी के विगत वर्षों ने देश को, जो कभी सिर्फ़ यूरोप को कच्चा माल देता था, विश्व की तीसरी सबसे बड़ी वैज्ञानिक और तकनीकी शक्ति के रूप में रुपान्तरित किया है। भारत आणविक, अन्तरिक्ष, सागरीय और अटलांटिक क्लब में प्रवेश कर चुका है। विज्ञान के विख्यात अध्येता ए. रहमान की यह पुस्तक स्वतंत्र भारत में विज्ञान और तकनीकी प्रगति के विभिन्न आयामों को रेखांकित करती हुई हमें इस प्रगति का एक सम्पूर्ण तथ्यात्मक विवरण उपलब्ध कराती है।

- Description: भास्कराचार्य प्राचीन भारत के सबसे महत्त्वपूर्ण गणितज्ञ-खगोलविद् हैं। ईसा की बारहवीं सदी में (1114 ई.), आज से लगभग नौ सौ साल पहले जन्मे भास्कराचार्य ने भारतीय गणित व ज्योतिष को लगभग चरम पर पहुँचा दिया था। विद्वानों का मानना है कि उसके बाद भारत में गणित व ज्योतिष का विकास बहुत कम हुआ। उनकी ‘लीलावती’ पुस्तक के बारे में आज भी गाँवों में बुज़ुर्ग लोग बात करते मिल जाते हैं। इस प्रसंग में एक दिलचस्प घटना का उल्लेख लेखक ने पुस्तक के शुरू में किया भी है। भारत की देशीय वैज्ञानिक चेतना के पैरोकार तथा अन्वेषक गुणाकर मुळे ने गहन अध्यवसाय तथा शोध के बाद भास्कराचार्य के जीवन, व्यक्तित्व तथा कृतित्व से सम्बन्धित कुछ दुर्लभ तथ्यों की खोज कर इस पुस्तक की रचना की, और गणित के क्षेत्र में सदियों पहले किए गए उनके कार्यों को सरल-सुगम भाषा में प्रस्तुत किया है। पुस्तक का एक महत्त्वपूर्ण पक्ष यह है कि इसमें केवल भास्कराचार्य ही नहीं, बल्कि उनके आविर्भाव से पहले भारत में गणित के विकास और उनके बाद की स्थिति की भी विस्तृत विवेचना की गई है जिससे यह पुस्तक भारतीय गणित ज्योतिष के इतिहास का एक विस्तृत सूचनात्मक ख़ाका भी हमें देती है। पुस्तक में भास्कराचार्य की जीवनगाथा के सूत्रों को जोड़ने के अलावा उनकी उपलब्ध पुस्तकों—‘लीलावती’, ‘बीजगणित’, ‘सिद्धान्त शिरोमणि’ तथा ‘करण कुतूहल’—पर विस्तृत अध्याय हैं जिनसे हमें इन पुस्तकों की विषय-वस्तु की सम्यक् जानकारी मिलती है और साथ में है विस्तृत परिशिष्ट। जिससे हमें भारतीय गणित-ज्योतिष के बारे में अद्यतन सूचनाएँ तथा गणित-ज्योतिष के आधुनिक इतिहासकारों आदि का परिचय प्राप्त होता है। मसलन परिशिष्ट के एक अध्याय में बताया गया है कि राजा सवाई जयसिंह द्वारा बनवाई वेधशालाओं के बाद भारत में आकाश के अध्ययन अवलोकन के लिए निर्मित साधनों में कितनी प्रगति हुई है। कहना न होगा कि भारत में गणित-ज्योतिष के विकास-क्रम पर यह एक सम्पूर्ण-ग्रन्थ है। साथ ही यह भी उल्लेखनीय है कि यह स्वर्गीय गुणाकर जी की उन कुछ पुस्तकों में एक है, जिन पर वे अपने अन्तिम दिनों में काम कर रहे थे; हमारा सौभाग्य कि यह पुस्तक उनके ही हाथों पूरी हो चुकी थी।
