इनमें बेचैन कर देनेवाली ऐन्द्रिकता है—‘ताज़े आटे की गर्मी थी उसकी ख़ुशी/वसन्त उसके लिए अब उखड़े नाखून की तरह है’। एक विरल करुणा और क्रोध। इनमें जीवन के प्रति समर्थन और लालसा है जैसे कि ‘ऐसा ही होता है’ कविता में, जो साधारण मनुष्य के दैनंदिन प्रेम को ऐतिहासिक परिप्रेक्ष्य प्रदान करती है। ‘गंध’ शीर्षक कविता स्वयं बोधिसत्व की कविताओं में अलग से उल्लेखनीय है। यह एक बड़ी कविता है, हमारे जीवन की दारुण विपत्ति, विडम्बना एवं निजी और सामाजिक के सीमा–प्रदेश पर निरन्तर विद्यमान द्वन्द्व की कविता।

एक बात और—ये कविताएँ गहरे राजनैतिक आशय एवं नैतिक संकल्प की कविताएँ हैं। बोधिसत्व का ही शब्द लेकर कहें तो यह वह कविता है ‘जो समाज के हारे–गाढ़े काम दे’।

विनोद कुमार शुक्ल समकालीन कविता के संसार में उन थोड़े से ऐसे कवियों में शुमार हैं जिन्होंने समकालीन कविता की दिशा और दृष्टि को काफ़ी हद तक नियंत्रित किया है। उनकी इस हैसियत को हिन्दी में लगभग सभी कवियों ने स्वीकार किया है।

काव्याभिव्यक्ति में मित कथनों का जितना सार्थक प्रयोग वे करते हैं, उतना शमशेर ही कर पाते थे। शब्दों को कम से कम ख़र्च करके कैसे अर्थ के भंडार को समेटा जाए इसे सीखने के लिए विनोद कुमार शुक्ल की कविता काम की चीज़ है।

वे विचारधारा के पुल से होकर रास्ता तय करने वाले कवि नहीं हैं, बल्कि वे कविता की नदी को ख़ुद तैर कर पार करने वाले कवि हैं। कम से कम उनके लम्बे कवि-कर्म का संघर्ष यही प्रतिमान हमारे सामने रखता है। वे हिन्दी कविता के संसार में उन थोड़े से कवियों में हैं जिन्होंने चालू मुहावरे को तोड़कर अपनी कविता में संवेदना और काव्य-शिल्प के लिए अनोखा आयाम चुना है। अपनी काव्यभाषा के चुनाव में वे जितने विरल, संयमी और जागरूक कवि हैं, उतने कम ही कवि रहे हैं। यह उनकी चुनिन्दा कविताओं का संकलन है।
