फ़िल्मों का गीत-संगीत भारतीय जन-जीवन का अभिन्न हिस्सा है। शायद ही ऐसा कोई समय हो जब कहीं-न-कहीं से किसी फ़िल्मी गीत की कोई धुन, कोई बोल, कोई पंक्ति हमारे आसपास न रहती हो। वे हमारा मनोरंजन भी हैं, हमारा फ़लसफ़ा भी, हमारे सुख-दुख की अभिव्यक्ति भी।
दुनिया में कहीं भी फ़िल्में आम ज़िन्दगी में इस तरह शामिल नहीं हैं जैसे हमारे यहाँ। बल्कि हिन्दी गीतों की लोकप्रियता तो उन क्षेत्रों में भी है जहाँ की भाषा हिन्दी नहीं है फिर भी गीत-संगीत के इस जादुई संसार पर ढंग की किताबें कुछ कम ही हैं।
पंकज राग ने ‘धुनों की यात्रा’ शीर्षक अपनी चर्चित किताब में इस तरफ़ क़दम बढ़ाते हुए फ़िल्मी गीतों को लेकर एक दस्तावेज़ी काम किया था। अब इस किताब में वे हिन्दी फ़िल्मी गीतों पर कुछ और ही अन्दाज़ में बात करते हुए उनके माध्यम से भारतीय समाज को भी समझने और समझाने का प्रयास कर रहे हैं।
फ़िल्मी गीतों के इतिहास को अलग-अलग सन्दर्भों और कोणों से देखते हुए वे इस किताब में न सिर्फ़ फ़िल्मी गीतों का विश्लेषण करते हैं, बल्कि उनकी संरचना, स्वीकृति, लोकप्रियता और विषयवस्तु की जानकारी देते हुए भारतीय समाज के उतार-चढ़ाव, उसके ग्राफ़ को भी अंकित करते चलते हैं।
