भारत के प्रधानमंत्री द्वारा 15 अगस्त, 2014 को देश में स्वच्छता कार्यक्रम पर ज़ोर देते हुए एक विराट स्वच्छता अभियान की नींव रखी गई। इसके तहत उन्होंने लोगों से आह्वान किया कि न तो हम स्वयं गन्दगी फैलाएँ और न किसी को फैलाने दें। देश भर में शौचालयों का निर्माण तथा खुले में शौच न करने की प्रवृत्ति को हतोत्साहित करने के लिए व्यापक पैमाने पर प्रचार अभियान भी इसका हिस्सा था। इस पुस्तक में ‘स्वच्छ भारत मिशन’ की सांगोपांग जानकारी दी गई है। इस अभियान के तहत चिकित्सालयों, शिक्षण संस्थाओं, रेलवे तथा बस स्टैंड की सफ़ाई, पानी और परम्परागत जल-भंडारों आदि सभी स्थानों पर सफ़ाई के महत्त्व तथा पद्धति को स्पष्ट किया गया है। यह पुस्तक स्वच्छ भारत मिशन की निर्देशिका है जिससे आप इस अभियान से जुड़ी हर जानकारी हासिल कर सकते हैं।

ग़ुलामी भले ही विदा हो गई हो, जाति तो मुसलमानों में क़ायम है ही। उदाहरण के लिए, बंगाल के मुसलमानों की स्थिति को लिया जा सकता है। 1901 के लिए बंगाल प्रान्त के जनगणना अधीक्षक ने बंगाल के मुसलमानों के बारे में यह रोचक तथ्य दर्ज किए हैं—‘मुसलमानों का चार वर्गों—शेख़़, सैयद, मुग़ल और पठान—में परम्परागत विभाजन इस प्रान्त (बंगाल) में प्रायः लागू नहीं है। मुसलमान दो मुख्य सामाजिक विभक्त मानते हैं—1. अशराफ़ अथवा शरफ़ और 2. अज़लाफ़। अशराफ़ से तात्पर्य है ‘कुलीन’ और इसमें विदेशियों के वंशज तथा ऊँची जाति के धर्मान्तरित हिन्दू शामिल हैं। व्यावसायिक वर्ग और निचली जातियों के धर्मान्तरित शेष अन्य मुसलमान अज़लाफ़ अर्थात नीच अथवा निकृष्ट व्यक्ति माने जाते हैं। उन्हें कमीना अथवा इतर कमीना या रासिल, जो ‘रिज़ाल’ का भ्रष्ट रूप है, बेकार कहा जाता है। कुछ स्थानों पर एक तीसरा वर्ग ‘अरज़ाल’ भी है, जिसमें आनेवाले व्यक्ति सबसे नीच समझे जाते हैं। उनके साथ कोई भी अन्य मुसलमान मिलेगा-जुलेगा नहीं और न उन्हें मस्जिद और सार्वजनिक क़ब्रिस्तानों में प्रवेश करने दिया जाता है।

इन वर्गों में भी हिन्दू में प्रचलित जैसी सामाजिक वरीयता और जातियाँ हैं।...

मुसलमानों में इन बुराइयों का होना दु:खद है, किन्तु उससे भी अधिक दु:खद तथ्य यह है कि भारत के मुसलमानों में समाज-सुधार हेतु इन बुराइयों के सफलतापूर्वक उन्मूलन के लिए कोई संगठित आन्दोलन नहीं उभरा।...दूसरी ओर, मुसलमान यह महसूस ही नहीं करते कि ये बुराइयाँ हैं। परिणामतः वे उनके निवारण हेतु सक्रियता भी नहीं दर्शाते। इसके विपरीत, अपनी मौजूदा प्रथाओं में किसी भी परिवर्तन का विरोध करते हैं।

मूर्धन्य साहित्यकार जयशंकर प्रसाद का साहित्य सर्वसुलभ है लेकिन उनके ‘तुमुल कोलाहल’ भरे जीवन की कहानी से दुनिया अब तक प्रायः अपरिचित रही है। ऐसे में, प्रसाद के महाप्रयाण के आठ दशक बाद उनकी जीवन-कथा को पहली बार पूरे विस्तार से प्रस्तुत करनेवाले उपन्यास ‘कंथा’ का महत्त्व स्वयंसिद्ध है।

प्रसाद के युग को रचने के लिए इस उपन्यास में लेखक ने जिस भाषा और दृश्यबद्ध शैली को गढ़ा है, वह न सिर्फ़ उसकी विशिष्ट रचनाशीलता का प्रमाण है, बल्कि पाठकों को भी विरल अनुभव प्रदान करनेवाला है।
