अखिल भारतीय भोजपुरी सम्मेलन के दूसरे अधिवेशन 1974 में, अपने अध्यक्षीय भाषा में भिखारी ठाकुर का उल्लेख करते हुए राहुल सांकृत्यायन ने कहा था—हम लोगों की बोली में कितनी ताकत है, कितना तेज है, यह आप लोग भिखारी ठाकुर के नाटकों में देखते हैं। लोगों को क्यों अच्छे लगते हैं भिखारी ठाकुर के नाटक? क्यों दस-दस पन्द्रह-पन्द्रह हजार की भीड़ होती है इन नाटकों को देखने के लिए? लगता है कि इन्हीं नाटकों में जनता को रस मिलता है! जिस चीज में रस मिले, वही कविता है। किसी की बड़ी नाक हो और वह केवल दोष ही सूँघता फिरे तो उसके लिए... क्या कहा जाए। मैं यह नहीं कहता कि भिखारी ठाकुर के नाटकों में दोष नहीं हैं, दोष हैं तो उसका कारण भिखारी ठाकुर नहीं हैं, उसका कारण पढ़े-लिखे लोग हैं। वे लोग यदि अपनी बोली से नेह दिखलाते, भिखारी ठाकुर का नाटक देखते और उसमें कोई बात सुझाते तो ये सब दोष मिट जाते। भिखारी ठाकुर हम लोगों के एक अनगढ़ हीरा हैं। उनमें कुल गुण हैं, सिर्फ इधर-उधर थोड़ा तराशने की जरूरत है ।
यह पुस्तक उसी अनगढ़ हीरे के कृतित्व की समग्रता में पड़ताल करती है। यहाँ यह उल्लेख करना अनुचित नहीं होगा कि इस पुस्तक के लेखक ने ही भिखारी ठाकुर को अपने पी-एच.डी. का विषय बनाकर भोजपुरी के इस अप्रतिम नाटककार-कवि की तरफ अकादमिक जगत का ध्यान आकर्षित किया था। आज साहित्य-संस्कृति के क्षेत्र में भिखारी ठाकुर का नाम अपरिचित नहीं है तो इसमें तैयब हुसैन की भूमिका को अस्वीकार नहीं किया जा सकता। इस पुस्तक में उन्होंने न केवल भिखारी के व्यक्तित्व-कृतित्व की बल्कि भोजपुरी समाज की और उसके सन्दर्भ से वस्तुत: उत्तर भारतीय समाज की सामाजिक-सांस्कृतिक गुत्थियों को खोलने का प्रयास किया है जो निश्चय ही विचारणीय और बहसतलब है।

- Description: किसी कहानी को लोकप्रिय तो पाठक ही बनाता है। जो रचना पाठकों द्वारा पढ़ी ही न जाए, वह लोकप्रिय नहीं होती। किंतु इसका अर्थ यह नहीं है कि जो रचना लेखक को प्रिय न हो, पाठक उसे लोकप्रिय बना देगा। वस्तुतः कहानियाँ लेखक और पाठक दोनों की रुचि से लोकप्रिय बनती हैं। मैंने 1960-70 के दौर में कहानियाँ लिखी थीं। तब तक वे उपन्यास नहीं लिखे गए थे, जिन्होंने अपनी लोकप्रियता के बल पर कहानियों की चर्चा को मंद कर दिया है। इसके पश्चात् उपन्यासों ने कहानियों को अपना अंग ही बना लिया। लिखने को तो अब भी कहानी लिखने बैठ जाता हूँ, लिख भी लेता हूँ, किंतु मेरे लेखन के केंद्र में कहानी नहीं है। फिर भी कह सकता हूँ कि ‘परिणति’, ‘नमक का कैदी’, ‘संचित भूख’, ‘किरचे’, ‘निचले फ्लैट में’ और ‘नींद आने तक’ जैसी कहानियाँ न मुझसे भुलाई गई हैं और न पाठकों द्वारा उनकी उपेक्षा की स्थिति आई है। यदा-कदा उनकी चर्चा होती ही रहती है। वह मेरी किशोरावस्था थी। उसमें समाज के प्रति दायित्वबोध भी था और प्रेम का आकर्षण भी। उनमें मेरे भाई-बहन भी हैं और मेरी सखियाँ भी। वह जीवन का वह महत्त्वपूर्ण मोड़ था, जिसे भुलाना संभव नहीं है। परिणामतः आज आधी शताब्दी के पश्चात् भी वे कहानियाँ मुझे प्रिय हैं। —नरेंद्र कोहली

- Description: डॉ. नामवर सिंह हिन्दी आलोचना की वाचिक परम्परा के आचार्य कहे जाते हैं। जैसे बाबा नागार्जुन घूम-घूमकर किसानों और मजदूरों की सभाओं से लेकर छात्र-नौजवानों, बुद्विजीवियों और विद्वानों तक की गोष्ठियों में अपनी कविताएँ बेहिचक सुनाकर जनतांत्रिक संवेदना जगाने का काम करते रहे, वैसे ही नामवर जी घूम-घूमकर वैचारिक लड़ाई लड़ते रहे; रूढ़िवादिता, अन्धविश्वास, कलावाद, व्यक्तिवाद आदि के खिलाफ चिन्तन को प्रेरित करते रहे; नई चेतना का प्रसार करते रहे हैं। इस वैचारिक, सांस्कृतिक अभियान में नामवर जी एक तो विचारहीनता की व्यावहारिक काट करते रहे, दूसरे वैकल्पिक विचारधारा की ओर से लोक शिक्षण भी करते रहे। नामवर जी ने मार्क्सवाद को अध्ययन की पद्धति के रूप में, चिन्तन की पद्धति के रूप में, समाज में क्रान्तिकारी परिवर्तन लानेवाले मार्गदर्शक सिद्धान्त के रूप में, जीवन और समाज को मानवीय बनानेवाले सौन्दर्य-सिद्धान्त के रूप में स्वीकार किया था। एक मार्क्सवादी होने के नाते वे आत्मालोचन को भी स्वीकार करके चलते रहे। वे आत्मालोचन करते भी रहे। उनके व्याख्यानों और लेखन में भी इसके उदाहरण मिलते हैं। आलोचना को स्वीकार करने में नामवर जी का जवाब नहीं। यही कारण है कि हिन्दी क्षेत्र की शिक्षित जनता के बीच मार्क्सवाद और वामपंथ के बहुत लोकप्रिय नहीं होने के बावजूद नामवर जी उनके बीच प्रतिष्ठित और लोकप्रिय रहे। इस पुस्तक में नामवर जी के पाँच व्याख्यान संकलित हैं जो उन्होंने पटना में प्रगतिशील लेखक संघ के मंच से विभिन्न अवसरों पर दिए थे। इन व्याख्यानों को सम्पादित करते हुए भी व्याख्यान के रूप में ही रहने दिया गया है, ताकि पाठक नामवर जी की वक्तृत्व कला का आनन्द भी ले सकें। नामवर जी हिन्दी के सर्वोत्तम वक्ता रहे और माने भी गए। उनके व्याख्यान में भाषा के प्रवाह के साथ विचारों की लय है। इस लय का निर्माण विचारों के तारतम्य और क्रमबद्धता से होता है। अनावश्यक तथ्यों और प्रसंगों से वे बचते थे और रोचकता का भी ध्यान हमेशा रखते थे। आज के साहित्य, विचारधारा, सौन्दर्य, राजनीति और आलोचना से जुड़े तथा उनके अन्तरसम्बन्धों के बारे में महत्त्वपूर्ण बातें इन व्याख्यानों में कही गई हैं। हिन्दी आलोचना की यह एक महत्त्वपूर्ण किताब मानी जाएगी।
