क्रिस्टोफर कोलंबस का जन्म सन् 1449 में जेनोआ (इटली) में हुआ था। उसके पिता एक जहाजी थे, इसलिए बचपन से ही वह समुद्र एवं जलपोतों से लगाव रखता था। इन सबके चलते भूगोल व मानचित्रों के प्रति उसकी जिज्ञासा अत्यंत तीव्र हो गई थी। कोलंबस ने पृथ्वी के नक्शे पर एशिया की स्थिति का जो अनुमान लगाया था, वह गलत निकला और वह समुद्री यात्रा के द्वारा एशिया के बजाय अमेरिका पहुँच गया। इस यात्रा के दौरान किसी को यह जानकारी नहीं थी। इसी कारण एशियाई मार्ग की खोज का श्रेय कोलंबस के बजाय वास्को डि गामा को मिला। वास्को डि गामा कोलंबस की अमेरिका यात्रा के 6 वर्ष बाद सन् 1498 में अफ्रीका का चक्कर लगाता हुआ दक्षिण भारत के कोचीन बंदरगाह पर पहुँचा था। 14 वर्षों तक कोलंबस पुर्तगाल की राजधानी में रहा, लेकिन वहाँ के शासकों ने उसके साथ धोखा किया और उसको शहर से बाहर न जाने का आदेश दिया। परंतु कोलंबस अपने पुत्र डिएगो के साथ वहाँ से निकल भागा। 12 अक्तूबर, 1492 को कोलंबस ने एक नए द्वीप को खोज निकाला। इस स्थल को कोलंबस ने ‘इंडिया’ नाम दिया, जो आज संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका के 48 राज्यों में से एक ‘इंडियाना’ के नाम से प्रसिद्ध है। इस पुस्तक में कोलंबस के जीवन और उसके साहसिक समुद्री अभियानों का वर्णन, जो सुधी पाठकों को जानकारीपरक एवं रुचिकर लगेगा।

‘गैडफ्लाई’ क्रान्तिकारी विचारों के वाहक के रूप में अत्यन्त लोकप्रिय रहा है। इसका मुख्य पात्र आर्थर बर्टन है जिसके जीवन में आस्था, आदर्श, साहस, प्रेम, क्रान्ति और त्रासदी का अपूर्व मेल दिखाई देता है। उन्नीसवीं सदी के मध्य के उथल-पुथल भरे इटली में वह ऐसा युवक है, जो क्रान्तिकारी विचारों से परिचित होने पर पादरी बनने की पढ़ाई और धर्म से किनारा कर लेता है; और पत्रकार बनकर स्वयं क्रान्तिकारी विचारों का प्रचार करने लगता है। वह अपने पिता के दोहरेपन को भी स्वीकार नहीं करता। रोमांच और दार्शनिकता से भरपूर यह कहानी अन्तत: एक रक्तरंजित परिणति को प्राप्त करती है जहाँ आर्थर बर्टन को उसके विचारों के कारण जान गँवानी पड़ती है। उसकी प्रेम-कथा इस परिणति की त्रासदी को और गहरा बनाती है। लेकिन उसके विचार और संघर्ष दूसरों के लिए प्रेरक बन जाते हैं। वास्तव में, मानवीय स्वतंत्रता और गरिमा को ख़त्म करने वाले सामाजिक मानदंडों का जिस स्पष्टता से इस उपन्यास में विरोध किया गया है उसने इसको सार्वकालिक महत्त्व का बना दिया है।

भारत रत्न बाबासाहब डॉ. बी.आर. आंबेडकर को भारतीयसंविधान के सिद्धांत निर्माता और दलित अधिकारों के मुर प्रवक्ता के रूप में जाना जाताहै। उन्होंने कम उम्र से ही भेदभाव का अनुभव किया, जिसका उन्होंने अपने बाद के लेखनमें स्पष्ट रूप से वर्णन किया। एक जगह वे लिखते हैं—‘‘स्कूल में रहते हुए मैं जानताथा कि जब सामान्य वर्ग के बच्चे प्यासे होते हैं, तो वे पानी के नल के पास जा सकतेहैं, उसे खोल सकते हैं और अपनी प्यास बुझा सकते हैं, लेकिन मेरी स्थिति अलग थी। मैंनल को नहीं छू सकता था और जब तक नल को कोई सामान्य जन मेरे लिए नहीं खोल देता, तब तकमेरी प्यास बुझाना संभव न था।’’ 1920 में उन्होंनेएक साप्ताहिक मराठी अखबार शुरू किया, जिसमें जातिगत भेदभाव की कड़ी आलोचना की गई। उन्होंने1937 और 1946 में अंग्रेजों द्वारा दिए गए चुनाव लड़ने के लिए दो राजनीतिक दलों कीस्थापना की, हालाँकि इन्हें संसाधन-संपन्न कांग्रेस पार्टी के खिलाफ बहुत कम सफलतामिली। 1947 में भारत स्वतंत्र हुआ, तो प्रधानमंत्री नेहरू ने उन्हें पहले कानून औरन्यायमंत्री बनने के लिए आमंत्रित किया। संविधान 26 जनवरी, 1950 को लागू किया गया था।डॉ. आंबेडकर ने इसकी सराहना की कि इसकी सीमाएँ हैं। बाबासाहब के अनंत संघर्ष कीमर्मांतक कहानी, जिसमें उनके बाल-संघर्ष को मुखरता से अभिव्यक्त किया गया है।

‘क्रान्तिकारी कवि निराला’ हिन्दी के महाप्राण कवि निराला के काव्यगत विकास-क्रम को उनके वैयक्तिक संघर्ष के सन्दर्भ में देखते हुए उनके जीवन, तत्कालीन परिस्थितियों और उनकी कविता की विशिष्टताओं का विवेचन करती है। गौरतलब है कि यह पुस्तक उस समय लिखी गई थी, जब हिन्दी आलोचना में निराला के कृतित्व को लेकर कोई सुसंयोजित काम नहीं हुआ था। गिराला और उनके समय के साथ-साथ यह पुस्तक छायावाद तथा उससे पहले की काव्य-प्रवृत्तियों पर भी टिप्पणी करती चलती है, विशेषतया छायावाद पर। डॉ. बच्चन सिंह कहते हैं कि छायावादी काव्य-सर्जना का सम्बन्ध कवि की निजी प्रेरणा से रहा और यह पारम्परिक कवि-प्रतिभा से भिन्न चीज थी। छायावादी या रोमैंटिक कवि के लिए उसके रचनात्मक क्षणों का महत्त्व सर्वोपरि होता है। इसीलिए निराला की कविता को समझने के लिए भी उनके व्यक्ति को जानना जरूरी है। इसी से हम यह जान पाते हैं कि प्रगतिवादी नहीं होते हुए भी उनकी कविता इतनी प्रगतिपरक कैसे है, और प्रयोगवादी न होते हुए भी कविताओं में इतने रूपात्मक प्रयोग वे कैसे कर सके। निराला के परिचय से लेकर यह पुस्तक उनकी कविता के निर्णायक पड़ावों से होती हुई उनकी रचना-प्रक्रिया के विश्लेषण तक जाती है। संलग्न परिशिष्ट में संकलित ‘राम की शक्तिपूजा’ और निराला की अंतिम कविता की समीक्षा इसे और संग्रहणीय बना देती है। निराला और उनकी कविता को जानने-समझने के लिए इस पुस्तक का विशेष महत्व है।
