विनोबा की दृष्टि में उच्चतम कोटि का साहित्य मूलत: सत्यान्वेषण की स्वायत्त प्रक्रिया है—अनुभूत्यात्मक अन्वेषण की प्रक्रिया—और इसीलिए, वह उसे विज्ञान और आत्मज्ञान के समकक्ष—बल्कि शायद अधिक महत्त्वपूर्ण दर्जा देते हैं तथा साहित्य की शक्ति को 'परमेश्वर की शक्ति के बराबर' मानते हैं। साहित्यकारों की एकाधिक कोटियों को स्वीकार करते हुए भी वह सर्वाधिक महत्त्व उन साहित्यकारों को देते हैं, जिन्होंने किसी नए मार्ग का अन्वेषण किया होता है।
यह प्रक्रिया, विनोबा के अनुसार, केवल लेखक तक ही सीमित नहीं रहती, बल्कि पाठक या ग्रहीता में भी घटित होती है। वह, इसलिए अर्थ की निश्चितता को उत्तम साहित्य का गुण नहीं मानते। कह सकते हैं कि उत्तर-आधुनिकतावादी साहित्य-चिन्तकों की तरह वह साहित्यिक रचनात्मकता को अर्थ की निरंकुशता से मुक्ति के पक्षधर हैं। विनोबा उन साहित्यिक सैद्धान्तिकों की पंक्ति में आ खड़े होते हैं जो अर्थ या तात्पर्य को पाठकाश्रित मानते हैं। वह मानते हैं कि किसी रचना के न केवल परस्पर विरोधी भाष्य लिखे जा सकते हैं, बल्कि ऐसा भी भाष्य लिखा जा सकता है, जो स्वयं लेखक के अपने मन्तव्य के विरोध में हो और सम्भव है कि न केवल अन्य लोग, बल्कि स्वयं लेखक भी उसे स्वीकार कर ले। साहित्य के सत्य की अनुभूत्यात्मक प्रक्रिया होने के कारण विनोबा अपनी अनुभूति के प्रति निष्ठा को साहित्यकार के लिए अनिवार्य मानते हैं—यही साहित्यकार की नैतिकता है।
विनोबा के साहित्य-चिन्तन से सम्बन्धित लेखों और टिप्पणियों का यह चयन साहित्य-अध्येताओं की ही नहीं, सामान्य पाठक-वर्ग की साहित्यिक समझ को भी निश्चय ही उत्प्रेरित कर सकेगा, ऐसी उम्मीद की जा सकती है।
