- Description: नीनो फ़त्ते ख़ाँ बाज़ार, बहावलपुर ही रह गई होती, तो शायद वैसी ही होती जैसी अब भी वहाँ रह रही हज़ारों औरते हैं। एक हवेली से दूसरी हवेली में दुल्हन बन कर जाती और ढेर सारे पोते-पोतियों की विरासत छोड़ कर दुनिया को विदा कहती। लेकिन 1947 में नीनो दरयागंज पहुँच गई। बसना चाहा। बिखर गई। एक औरत की यह उजड़न सिर्फ़ उसकी कहानी न रह सकी, राजनीति और इतिहास की अनुगूँजों से भरी हुई वह उसकी सन्तानों में, पोते-पोतियों में रिसती चली गई—तीन पीढ़ियाँ एक अन्तहीन अजनबियत के सिलसिले में बँधी हुईं। दिल्ली वाले मुल्तानी मिट्टी तो जानते हैं। मुल्तान के लोग भी थे, उनकी ज़बान भी थी, उनकी तहज़ीब भी थी—यह कोई नहीं जानता। वह सब दिल्लीवाला बनने की जल्दबाज़ी में, पाकिस्तान से आए पंजाबी न कहलाने के डर में धीरे-धीरे खोता जा रहा है। तीन पीढ़ियों का यह आख्यान विभाजन की उस महात्रासदी से आगे बढ़ता है जिसे हम सब जानते हैं। यह उस अनकही दास्तान को खोलता है जिसमें रिफ़्यूजी दिल्ली में बसे और दिल्ली ख़ुद रिफ़्यूजियों से बसी। दोनों ने एक-दूसरे को नया चेहरा दिया—धीरे-धीरे, दर्द के साथ। मुल्तान की खोई गलियों से दिल्ली के ज़ख़्मी दिल तक, कश्मीर की ख़ामोश, बेचैन वादियों से बॉम्बे की धड़कन तक—यह एक विस्तृत और मार्मिक गाथा है ज़बान की, भूगोल की, और कभी न थमने वाली भटकन की। यह कहानी बताती है कि जब वह सब कुछ जो घर कहलाता है, राख हो जाए, तब भी क्या है जो बचा रह जाता है। एक बड़े जमाने और उसे जीने वाले बड़ी कद-काठी के लोगों और इतिहास की शक्ल बदलने वाली बड़ी घटनाओं का आख्यान है यह उपन्यास जो एक तरफ अगर क़िस्सागोई की नई उठान को संभव करता है, तो दूसरी ओर भाषा के संयम और सामर्थ्य को एक नई ऊँचाई देता है।
