एक परिवार की तीन पीढ़ियों के निरन्तर टूटते और ढहते जाने की यह कहानी न केवल आम मुस्लिमों की अवरुद्ध ज़िन्दगी पर रोशनी डालती है बल्कि उस मूल्य व्यवस्था को भी उजागर करती है जो इस त्रासद स्थिति के लिए ज़िम्मेवार है।
मुस्लिम समाज को लेकर सुनी-सुनाई धारणाओं से इतर यह उपन्यास जिस सचाई का साक्षात्कार कराता है वह हतप्रभ करता है, साथ ही अपने एक अभिन्न अंग के प्रति शेष भारतीय समाज के गहरे अपरिचय की कलई भी खोलता है।
ऐसा नहीं कि अपने बन्द दायरे में घुटते-टूटते, इस उपन्यास के किरदारों में कोई इस जकड़न को तोड़ने की कोशिश नहीं करता। लेकिन वह अपनों के बीच ही अकेला पड़ जाता है। नतीजतन इस जमे हुए काले जल में कई बार हलचल होने के बावजूद उसकी सड़ाँध दूर नहीं होती। इस तरह यह उपन्यास बतलाता है कि काला जल सिर्फ वही नहीं है जो किसी एक ताल में सड़ रहा है और जिसकी दुर्गन्ध का अजगर पूरी बस्ती को लपेट रहा है—यह वह जीवन-प्रणाली भी है जिसमें अमानवीय और प्रगतिविरोधी मानों और मूल्यों की असहनीय सड़ाँध ठहरी हुई है।
