मनु शर्मा के तीन उपन्यासों की कड़ी में यह पहला उपन्यास है। ‘घरौंदा’ का कालखंड लगभग 1930 से आरंभ होता है। कथा एक पाँच-छह वर्ष के बालक का पीछा करती है। इस उपन्यास में एक गरीब परिवार कड़कड़ाते जाड़े को कैसे भोगता है, टूटी चारपाई और फटी गुदड़ी केनीचे पड़े एक खाँसते-कूँखते व्यक्ति का उसके इकलौते बालक पर क्या प्रभाव पड़ता है, दिल को छूनेवाला इसका वृत्तांत उपन्यास में है। घरौंदे बनाने और मिटाने वाले बालक जग्गू को क्या मालूम कि उसके सामने एक घरौंदा टूट रहा है। जग्गू इस उपन्यास का नायक है, जो आगे चलकर काल की ठोकरें खाता हुआ ‘जयनाथ’ बन जाता है। वह जीवन के अनेक परिवर्तनों के साथ समाज के बदलते परिवेश का भी साक्षी बनता है—आजाद भारत का सपना, अंग्रेजों का अत्याचारी कुशासन और सांप्रदायिक दंगे। जग्गू के शैशव का प्रतीक यह ‘घरौंदा’ बाल सुलभ जिज्ञासाओं, कुतूहल और एक माँ के लाचारी मन को गहरे तक उद्वेलित करता है। तो क्या यह ऐतिहासिक उपन्यास है? नहीं। ऐतिहासिक उपन्यास में घटनाएँ और चरित्रों के केवल नाम सच होते हैं, बाकि सब काल्पनिक। उसमें कल्पना से परिवेष्ठित सच होता है, इसमें सत्य से परिवेष्ठित कल्पना। तो यह ग्रंथ इतिहास भी है और उपन्यास भी। काव्य के विविध उपाख्यानों के साथ आधी शताब्दी का महाख्यान है—‘घरौंदा’।

Maithili Novel

वैकल्य अर्थात् विकलता। कुष्ठरोग पर आधारित हिंदी में संभवतः यह पहला क्लासिकल और मूल ललित शैली में लिखा गया उपन्यास है। इसने कुष्ठ रोगियों के पुनर्वास और उपचार को लेकर समाज में लोगों की आँखें खोलने का काम किया है। उपन्यास का कथानक अंतर्मन को छू लेता है। विषय बहुत ही हृदयस्पर्शी और दिलचस्प है। यह दो महापुरुषों के मौन संघर्ष की गाथा है। एक वह जो, समाजसेवी हैं, कुष्ठरोगियों के लिए आश्रम व्यवस्था की बात करते हैं, तो दूसरे वह, जो प्रख्यात डॉक्टर हैं, अस्पताल व्यवस्था की बात करते हैं और रोगियों का इलाज घर से ही होना चाहिए—इसका पुरजोर समर्थन करते हैं। कुल मिलाकर कुष्ठरोग को लेकर वैज्ञानिक और सामाजिक दृष्टिकोण के बीच की यह गहरी खाई सशक्त कथ्य के ताने-बाने से बुनी एक करुण-गाथा है। दोनों महापुरुषों की पत्नियों का अपने पति और उनके कार्य के प्रति त्याग और समर्पण की कहानी भी गजब की है। कुष्ठरोग को महारोग के नाम से भी जाना जाता है, जिसके प्रति लोगों के मन में कई प्रकार के भ्रम, भय और अंधविश्वासी भावनाएँ थीं। इस रोग के संसर्ग की स्थिति, टीके का आविष्कार, उपलब्ध दवाइयाँ, देश-विदेश के अनुसंधानकर्ताओं की मान्यताएँ, सरकारी रवैया, रोगियों का देश निकाला, पाप-पुण्य जैसे मुद्दों को लेकर यह उपन्यास वैचारिक द्वंद्व पेश कर जनजागरण की स्थिति पैदा करता है।

राख बनकर बिखरने से पहले ख़ुशबू बनकर महक जाऊँ बस, इसी मौज के साथ लिखने की शुरुआत की थी। वैसे तो जो कुछ कहना था, इस कहानी के माध्यम से कह चुकी हूँ पर ‘मनरंगी’ के बारे में यह ज़रूर बताना चाहूँगी कि यह कहानी किसी नदी की तरह आगे बढ़ती है और नदी के जैसे ही हर पड़ाव पर इसकी तासीर अलहदा है। कहीं यह कहानी पहाड़ों से गुज़रती नदी की तरह अल्हड़ जान पड़ेगी तो कहीं निर्झर की तरह आवेग से खिलखिलाती। कहीं यह गहरी और शांत भी दिखाई देगी। एक नदी के सागर से मिलने के मानिंद यह तो तय है कि कहानी भी अपनी मंज़िल से मिलेगी, पर ख़ास वे रास्ते होंगे जहाँ से यह होकर गुज़रती है। और जैसे नदी को अपने साथ रखने की क़वा’इद में हम अपने पात्रों मे थोड़ी-सी नदी भर लेते हैं वैसे ही अगर अंजुली भर कहानी आपके ह्रदय-पात्र में जगह बना पाई तो मुझे लगेगा कि किताब के पन्नों से निकलकर कहानी अपने मुकाम तक पहुंच गई। किताब आपको कैसी लगी, जानने की प्रतीक्षा में ....
