- Description: ‘रामो का भतीजा’ को अधिकांश विद्वान दिदेरो की सर्वाधिक महत्त्वपूर्ण साहित्यिक रचना मानते हैं। यह दार्शनिक और नीतिशास्त्रीय होने के साथ ही एक सौन्दर्यशास्त्रीय कृति भी है जो अपने समय के तमाम नैतिक-वैधिक-सामाजिक-सौन्दर्यशास्त्रीय मूल्यों पर, प्रस्तरीकृत रूढ़ियों पर अनूठे कोण और मारक ढंग से सवाल उठाती है, जिरह करती है और बिना फ़ैसला सुनाए दो अवस्थितियों के दोनों पक्षों पर सोचने और सापेक्षत: सही-ग़लत की शिनाख़्त करने के लिए पाठक को तर्क एवं दृष्टि देकर खुला छोड़ देती है। इसीलिए इसे द्वन्द्ववाद की अनुपम कृति भी माना जाता। ‘रामो का भतीजा’ में स्वयं दिदेरो और रामो का भतीजा—दो ही मुख्य पात्र सामने हैं जिनके बीच एक लम्बे संवाद के रूप में रचना अन्त तक की यात्रा पूरी करती है। रामो का भतीजा भी तत्कालीन पेरिस का एक वास्तविक चरित्र है। प्रसिद्ध फ़्रांसीसी संगीत-रचनाकार रामो उसका चाचा है। (भतीजा) रामो एक ग़रीब संगीतकार है जो पेरिस के बोहेमियाई जीवन का एक प्रतिनिधि है—पूरी तरह से अनैतिक, बिना किसी उसूल का, मानवद्वेषी चरित्र, जो घूसखोर, धनलोलुप, प्रतिक्रियावादी पत्रकारों का मित्र है और एक ऐसा परजीवी जो धनी अभिजातों के घरों में घुसने की जुगत भिड़ाने में दक्ष है। रामो समाज के नैतिक मानदंडों को ख़ारिज करता है। वह उन्हें एक ऐसी ताक़त मानता है जो उसके लिए बेगानी है, उसके ख़िलाफ़ है और इसलिए बुरी है। अपनी कामनाओं-वासनाओं-आवश्यकताओं की पूर्ति—जीवन में बस इसी एक चीज़ को वह मूल्य के तौर पर स्वीकार करता है। लेकिन रचना का कौशल यह है कि अपने अनैतिक व्यवहार और मानवद्वेषी अभिव्यक्तियों के ज़रिए रामो अपने आसपास की दुनिया को बेनकाब करता जाता है। वह समाज के पाखंडों के मुखौटों को नोच देता है और उसके सारतत्त्व को सामने ला देता है। वह दार्शनिक (जिसका प्रतिनिधित्व संवाद में दिदेरो करता है) के आदर्शों की निर्जीविता और अमूर्तता को भी उजागर करता है। वह स्पष्टत: देख रहा है कि धन समाज की मुख्य शक्ति बनता जा रहा है, लेकिन दूसरी ओर ग़रीबी भी मौजूद है। इस स्थिति में किसी भी तरह की स्वतंत्रता का बोध भ्रामक है। हर व्यक्ति भाँति-भाँति की मुद्राएँ-मुखौटे ओढ़े हुए है और कोई भी अपने प्रति सच्चा और ईमानदार नहीं है।
