विश्व साहित्य के महान उपन्यासों को किशारों के लिए संक्षिप्त-रूपान्तरित संस्करणों की शृंखला में यह मार्क ट्वेन के प्रसिद्ध उपन्यास ‘द एडवेंचर्स ऑफ़ हकलबरी फ़िन’ का रूपान्तरण है। 1884 में प्रकाशित यह उपन्यास अपने रंगभेद-विरोध तथा भाषा-प्रयोगों के लिए कुछ लोगों की आलोचना का निशाना भी बना, लेकिन इसे मार्क ट्वेन की श्रेष्ठतम रचनाओं में एक माना जाता है।
उपन्यास की कहानी के केन्द्र में हकलबरी फ़िन नाम का एक किशोर है जिसे उसके दोस्त हक कहते हैं। नशेड़ी पिता द्वारा पाला गया हक अपने दोस्त जिम, जो एक ग़ुलाम है, के साथ मिसिसिपी नदी की रोमांचक यात्रा पर निकल जाता है। समाज के बन्धन उसे नहीं भाते। प्राकृतिक और सभ्य जीवन-शैली के बीच उसका रुझान प्राकृतिक की ओर है।
मिसिसिपी नदी की यात्रा के दौरान वह जीवन के अनेक सबक़ सीखता है और धीरे-धीरे उसका व्यक्तित्व भी निखरता जाता है। रंगभेद और 19वीं सदी के सभ्य अमेरिकी समाज के दोहरे चरित्र पर तीखी दृष्टि डालनेवाले इस उपन्यास को बाल साहित्य की धारा को एक नए स्तर पर ले जानेवाली रचना कहा जाता है।
