Dalpat Chauhan
Dalpat Chauhan is an accomplished writer from the Dalit community in Gujarat. His work reflects the social and literary movements that took place in the 1970s and 80s. Chauhan was an active member of the Gujarat Dalit Panthers and the Dalit Sangharsh Sangh, and he also edited several radical little magazines, including Kalo Suraj, Akrosh, and Sarvanam. These publications played a significant role in pioneering the Dalit Literary Movement in Gujarati. Between 1982 and 1985, when Gujarat experienced anti-reservation riots, Chauhan released anthologies of Dalit Poetry, investigative booklets, and little magazines that condemned the atrocities committed against Dalits and questioned the government's reports on them. Thanks to his tireless literary activism, Gujarati Dalit literature was able to establish a radical literary manifesto in 1987, defining its boundaries and functions for future generations of Dalit writers. Although Chauhan's work has yet to be discovered by non-Gujarati readers, academia and world literary cultures, his contributions to the Dalit Literary Movement have been invaluable.
