- Description: रात बहुत अँधेरी थी। रास्ता पहाड़ी और ऊबड़-खाबड़ था। आकाश पर बदली छाई हुई थी और अभी कुछ देर पूर्व जोर की वर्षा हो चुकी थी। जब जोर की हवा से वृक्ष और बड़ी-बड़ी घास साँय-साँय करती थी, तब जंगल का सन्नाटा और भी भयानक मालूम होता था। इस समय उस जंगल में दो घुड़सवार बढ़े चले जा रहे थे। दोनों के घोड़े खूब मजबूत थे, पर वे पसीने से लथपथ थे। घोड़े पग-पग पर ठोकरें खाते थे, पर उन्हें ऐसे बीहड़ रास्तों में, ऐसे संकट के समय, अपने स्वामी को ले जाने का अभ्यास था। सवार भी असाधारण, धेर्यवान् और वीर पुरुष थे। वे चुपचाप चल रहे थे। घोड़ों की टापों और उनकी प्रगति से कमर में लटकती हुई उनकी तलवारों और बरछों की खर-खराहट उस सनन्नाटे के आलम में एक भयपूर्ण रव उत्पन्न कर रही थी।
