महाकवि गोस्वामी तुलसीदास काव्य-जगत् के निर्विवाद साहित्य सम्राट हैं, यह सत्य है किन्तु कवि होते हुए उनके अद्वितीय जुझारू समाजसेवी व्यक्तित्व का विस्तार से प्रकाशन हो तो उन्हें साहित्य-सम्राट जैसी ही एक और उपाधि देने में संकोच नहीं होगा। ‘रा’ और ‘म’ दो अक्षर मात्र पर ‘रामबोला’ ने बारह आर्ष ग्रन्थों की रचना देश की परम राजनीतिक-सामाजिक उथल-पुथल की विषमता में की। लेखन-कार्य सुरक्षित बन्द कोठरियों में किया किन्तु अपनों और ग़ैरों के धार्मिक मदान्धता के संकटों में खुले मैदानों में अखाड़ची ताल की ठोक में अकेले चलते हुए महाबीर जी के नगर-भर में एक-दो नहीं, बारह विग्रहों की स्थापना को कवि का असाधारण साहस कहना ग़लत नहीं होगा।

अपने महान् वैभव और अस्मिता को भूली वीर वसुन्धरा की ‘अमृतस्य पुत्र: जाति’ को फिर से जगाने के समाजकाज के लिए रामकाज करनेवाले बल, बुद्धि, विद्या, युक्ति, शक्ति के धनी हनुमान की मूर्ति-प्रतिष्ठा का तुलसीदास ने क्रान्तिकारी कार्य किया। आज इसका कोई स्पष्ट अभिलेख उपलब्ध नहीं है कि ये स्थापनाएँ कहाँ-कहाँ हैं। लेखक को मात्र दस मन्दिर मिले। काशी के एक कोने से दूसरे कोने तक आज इनकी वास्तविक स्थिति का पता लगानेवाला लेखा-जोखा श्री मेहरोत्रा का यह शोध-ग्रन्थ है।

इस ग्रन्थ में उन अखाड़ों, लीलाओं का भी विवेचन है जिन्हें तुलसीदास जी ने नगर के कोने-कोने में मन्दिरों के साथ स्थापित किया था। ये स्थापनाएँ साबित करती हैं कि तुलसीदास एक व्यक्ति या साहित्यकार मात्र ही नहीं, सम्पूर्ण संस्कृति थे। आज हम सब का पुनीत कर्त्तव्य है कि इन सांस्कृतिक धरोहरों की पूर्ण निष्ठा से संरक्षा करें। तुलसीदास जी द्वारा स्थापित बारह अखाड़ों में आज मात्र दो शेष हैं। सम्भवत: राजमन्दिर से उन्होंने पहला रामलीला मंचन आरम्भ किया था जो आज धनाभाव के कारण बन्द है। उस लीला मंचन के भवन अभी तीन वर्ष पूर्व तक जीवित अवशेष थे जिन पर अब किसी का क़ब्ज़ा है। ये पुरातात्त्विक अवशेष राष्ट्र की धरोहर हैं। इस पुस्तक के माध्यम से लेखक ने समाज और सरकार दोनों को इन्हें संरक्षित रखने का आह्वान किया है।

मृत्यु के देवता माने गए यमराज के उपदेशों पर आधारित यमगीता है। कठोपनिषद्, विष्णु पुराण तथा अग्नि पुराण में उपलब्ध यमगीता किसी को भी अज्ञात के भय, भविष्य की चिन्ता और मृत्यु के आतंक से मुक्त करने वाला ग्रंथ है। गीताओं में प्राय: सृष्टि और परमात्मा के रहस्यों की बातें प्रमुख होती हैं, लेकिन यह ग्रंथ जीवन में निराशा से बचने और निरन्तर उन्नति करने के जटिल सिद्धान्त सरल भाषा में बताता है। दुखों-कष्टों एवं असफलताओं से बचने के लिए आध्यात्मिक सिद्धान्तों का भी वर्णन इस गीता में है। इस ग्रंथ में तीन यमगीताओं के सार के साथ ही इनके आधुनिक सन्दर्भ भी हैं।

प्राचीन इतिहास में इक्ष्वाकु वंश में एक से बढ़कर एक यशस्वी, उत्तम प्रजापालक, वचन के धनी, महात्मा नरेशों में 39वीं पीढ़ी के श्रीरामचन्द्र श्रेष्ठतम नरेश ही नहीं, पृथ्वी के अप्रतिम पुरुषोत्तम हुए जिन्होंने मानवता के उत्कर्ष देवों को भी बौना कर दिया। राज्य छोड़कर वनवास करने की, छोटे से समय की, माता के आज्ञापालन की बात एक पुत्र को पुरुषोत्तम और देवोत्तम बना सकती है, यह श्रीराम के आचरण से प्रमाणित हुआ। राम की आयु ग्यारह हज़ार वर्ष की रही हो या मात्र एक सौ ग्यारह वर्ष की, इसमें चौदह वर्ष का छोटा काल-खंड उनकी चरित्रगत सम्पत्ति को अयोध्या के चक्रवर्ती अधिपति के पद से भी ऊँचा उठानेवाला हुआ। कठोर दंडकवन के लिए वनवासी होने की विमाता की आज्ञा शिरोधार्य कर राम ने वन में असम्भव को सम्भव करने की जो उपलब्धियाँ पाईं, उनसे वे पुरुषोत्तम-ईशोत्तम दोनों ही हुए। राम के जीवन का यह काल उन्हें ‘राम' बनाने का उत्कर्ष काल था। जीवन में यह संयोग न होने पर उत्तम प्रजापालन की रघुवंश की परम्परा में एक और श्रेष्ठ राजा की गिनती हो जाती, किन्तु वे देश-देशान्तर के विश्व-राम नहीं होते। पीड़ादायक राक्षसों के साथ अजेय रावण से संसार को मुक्ति दिलाना इस वन प्रदेश में प्रवेश से सम्भव हुआ। विमाता की आज्ञा और पुत्र की शिरोधार्यता में ऐसा क्या था कि विश्व में ऐसा दूसरा इतिहास नहीं हुआ, यह इस ग्रन्थ की विषय वस्तु है। वनवास की कठोर कसौटी से रामराज्य के नाम से वनों में ही अंकुरित हुई थी। माता-पिता के आज्ञा-पालन की साधारण सी बात से कोई इतना असाधारण लोकादर्श हो सकता है, राजा बनने से अधिक महत्त्व कर्तव्यों में है, यह राम-चरित्र बताता है। परम्परागत प्रसंगों से अलग ऐसे अनेक अज्ञात व उपेक्षित प्रसंग यहाँ प्रकाशित हुए हैं जो राम इतिहास पर नई रोशनी डालते हैं। महान इतिहास की नवीन दिशा में राम के समकक्ष शत्रु-नायक पौलस्त्य रावण-कुल के इतिहास का भी विस्तार से यहाँ वर्णन है। यह ग्रन्थ हिन्दी, अंग्रेज़ी और अन्य भाषाओं में प्रकाशित उन सामग्रियों का उत्तर है जो पूर्वग्रह से लिखे गए हैं, जिनमें अध्ययन का अभाव है और विशेषतः युवा वर्ग को भ्रमित करने का प्रयास है।

निर्बलों की सहायता करना ही सबलों का कर्तव्य है। उसी से सुखी समाज की स्थापना हो सकती है। सभी धर्मों के मूल में दया की भावना ही प्रमुख है। बसवेश्वर के एक वचन का यही भाव है—दया के बिना धर्म कहाँ? सभी प्राणियों के प्रति दया चाहिए। दया ही धर्म का मूल है, दया-धर्म के पथ पर जो नहीं चलता कूडलसंगमदेव को वह नहीं भाता।

बसवेश्वर की वचन रचना का उद्देश्य ही सुखी समाज की स्थापना था। चोरी, असत्य, अप्रामाणिकता, दिखावा, आडम्बर एवं अहंरहित समाज की स्थापना बसव का परम उद्देश्य था, जो निम्न एक वचन से स्पष्ट होता है—चोरी न करो, हत्या न करो, झूठ मत बोलो, क्रोध न करो, दूसरों से घृणा न करो, स्वप्रशंसा न करो, सम्मुख ताड़ना न करो, यही भीतरी शुद्धि है और यही बाहरी शुद्धि है, यही मात्र हमारे कूडलसंगमदेव को प्रसन्न करने का सही मार्ग है। हठ चाहिए शरण को पर-धन नहीं चाहने का, हठ चाहिए शरण को पर-सती नहीं चाहने का, हठ चाहिए शरण को अन्य देव को नहीं चाहने का, हठ चाहिए शरण को लिंग-जंगम को एक कहने का, हठ चाहिए शरण को प्रसाद को सत्य कहने का, हठहीन जनों से कूडलसंगमदेव कभी प्रसन्न नहीं होंगे।

Many of us think that Bhakti is discovering our Iśţa Devatā—chosen deity — and getting involved in ritualistic worship, visiting places of pilgrimage, and observing vigils and fasts. And we are not really very far from the truth. While Bhakti does recommend these activities for its practice, they are not its only activities, but something more, much more. The core of Bhakti is Love— a feeling of oneness. Though it does start with the IśţaDevatā, the feeling of oneness does not stop there, but keeps expanding till one starts feeling one with this whole Existence. The life of Saṅt Jñāneśwar, also known as Saṅt Jñānadev, and his three saintly siblings, Nivŗttināth, Sopāndev, and Muktābāi, of the late thirteenth century forms a perfect background for understanding and practising this wonderful path of Love. Though born in the community of Brahmins, they were ostracised from society and persecuted. For their tender age, they exhibited indomitable grit not only to bear the tribulations willingly but also to transform the negative feelings instilled by society into divine emotions of compassion and boundless love. This might come as a surprise to many readers. But, this is indeed the very first book on Magh Mela. As of now, the only book relevant to Magh Mela that is available in the market is a reproduction of the chapter on Magh Mahatmaya appearing in Padma Purana. But, that is purely mythological in content and does not deal with many aspects of the Magh Mela as it plays out in Allahabad. Everybody has heard of Kumbh Mela. But, how many of us have heard of Magh Mela? Does it surprise you to learn that Kumbh Mela is nothing but Magh Mela that is celebrated every twelfth year and Ardh Kumbh is nothing but the sixth Magh Mela celebrated between two Kumbh Melas? In other words, a mini version of the Kumbh Mela is celebrated in Allahabad year after year in the form of Magh Mela which goes almost unnoticed and unreported outside of Allahabad and Uttar Pradesh. Magh Mela is an incredible annual phenomenon in Allahabad (Prayag) from time immemorial. It is a monthlong Hindu festival that is celebrated in the month of Magh at Sangam or the confluence of rivers Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical river Saraswati. Magh Mela is marked by (snan) ritual bathing and taking up temporary residence near Sangam in the month Magh and leading an austere life devoted to prayers and rituals (kalpavas) according to their vows. The month of Magh begins with Paush Purnima and ends with Magh Purnima. But, the Magh Mela begins on Makkar Sankranti or Paush Purnima (whichever is earlier) and ends with Maha Shivaratri because of administrative reasons. Lord Vishnu is the presiding deity of Allahabad as well as the month of Magh which is considered to be the most auspicious month for Hindus. Allahabad is also known as Tirthraj Prayag. In other words, Allahabad is the king of pilgrimage sites for Hindus. Separate chapters are devoted to the most auspicious months of the Hindu calendar in the Puranas in the form of Vaishak Mahatmaya, Kartik Mahatmaya and Magh Mahatmaya explaining the significance of each month. The most important ritual for Vaishak is charity (daan). Similarly, the main ritual for Kartik is offerings in the form of earthen lamps (deep daan); and, the main ritual for Magh is ritual bathing (snan). Therefore, Magh Mela is essentially a bathing festival coupled with kalpavas. And, Tirthraj Prayag is the sacred land that has been designated for Magh Mela by Hindu scriptures. That is the secret of Magh Mela.

वेद सनातनविद्या के काव्यात्मक प्रतिपादन हैं। ऋग्वेद संहिता के अनुवाद एवं व्याख्या का प्रयास अनेक भाषाओं में समय-समय पर होता रहा है, किन्तु अभी तक उपलब्ध सभी अनुवादों में काव्यपक्ष की उपेक्षा अथवा पद्यानुवाद की प्रस्तुति के असम्भव प्रयास ही किए गए हैं जो ऋचाओं के साथ पूरा न्याय नहीं करते हैं। वेदों में भावों की सनातनता एक व्यापक ध्वनि के रूप में सूक्तों, संवादों और आख्यानों में विद्यमान है। प्रस्तुत अनुवाद में पादानुसारी किन्तु भावपरक अनुवाद पर विशेष आग्रह सोद्देश्य है ताकि ऋचाओं की काव्यात्मकता का यथासम्भव सम्प्रेषण एवं मूल की अर्थयोजना का क्रम अनुवाद में सुरक्षित रहे।

हिन्दी में तसव्वु़फ या सूफ़ीमत पर दो प्रामाणिक पुस्तकें छपी हैं। एक चन्द्रबली पाण्डेय की, दूसरी डॉ. राममूर्ति त्रिपाठी की। इस्लाम धर्म के अनुयायी विद्वान् की हिन्दी में यह पहली पुस्तक है—सू़फ़ीवाद के आध्यामिक आयाम।

इस पुस्तक में ऐतिहासिक पृष्ठभूमि के साथ-साथ सू़फ़ी सिद्धान्तों का बहुत ही स्पष्ट और प्रामाणिक विवेचन है। प्रोफ़ेसर जाफ़र रज़ा ने अपने प्रतिपादन की पुष्टि क़ुर्आन के उद्धरणों से की है। इसके साथ-साथ विभिन्न सू़फ़ी सम्प्रदायों का ऐतिहासिक, दार्शनिक और साधनापरक विवेचन भी इसमें है।

भगवद्गीता भारत के आध्यात्मिक वाङ्मय की अनुपम विभूति है। यह कम-से-कम दो सहस्र वर्षों से भी अधिक समय से भारतीय चिंतन व आध्यात्मिक साधना की महत्त्वपूर्ण प्रेरणा-स्रोत रही है। विश्व की सभी महत्त्वपूर्ण भाषाओं में गीता के अनुवाद किए जा चुके हैं। हिंदी भाषा भी इसका अपवाद नहीं है; किंतु ये अनुवाद प्रायः गद्य में किए गए हैं। अत : एक पद्यात्मक कृति के रूप में गीता के मूल पाठ में जो लयात्मक सरलता है, वह इन अनुवादों में सुलभ नहीं है। इसी अभाव की पूर्ति के लिए गीता का यह काव्यात्मक अनुवाद ‘भगवद्गीता-काव्य’ प्रस्तुत किया जा रहा है। गीता के मूल संस्कृत पाठ में अंत्यानुप्रास या तुकों की योजना का अभाव है। इसी बात को ध्यान में रखकर प्रस्तुत अनुवाद में छंद व लय का निर्वाह करते हुए भी तुकें मिलाने का प्रयास नहीं किया गया। इससे अनुवादक को गीता के मूल अर्थ की अधिकतम रक्षा में अभीष्ट सफलता मिली है। जीवन की विषम-से-विषम परिस्थिति में गीता ने असंख्य लोगों को मानसिक शांति प्रदान कर उनके जीवन-पथ को आलोकित किया है। आज के भौतिकता-परायण, मानसिक तनावों से ग्रस्त तथा जीवन के वास्तविक अर्थ की खोज में भटकते मनुष्य के लिए गीता का संदेश उतना ही प्रासंगिक है, जितना वह सदैव रहा है। आशा है, गीता का यह काव्यात्मक अनुवाद संस्कृत न जाननेवाले या उसका कम ज्ञान रखनेवाले गीता-प्रेमियों को मूल संस्कृत पाठ को पढ़ने जैसा ही आनंद दे सकेगा।
