कहानीकार, उपन्यासकार और सम्पादक के रूप में अपने सरोकारों, दृष्टिकोण, भाषा और पठनीयता के लिए सर्व-स्वीकृत अखिलेश ने इस पुस्तक में अपने बचपन के क़स्बे के ज़रिए वास्तविकता, रहस्य, स्मृति, विचार और कल्पना का ऐसा जादू उपस्थित किया है कि सब कुछ एक नए अर्थ में आलोकित हो उठता है।
अपनी इस कथित ग़ैर-कथात्मक रचना के आधारभूत रसायन में उन्होंने विभिन्न तत्त्वों का प्रयोग इस बारीकी से किया है कि यह कृति उपन्यास, कहानी, संस्मरण, आत्मकथा और यहाँ तक कि सामाजिक अध्ययन और आलोचना भी एक साथ हो जाती है। लगभग तीन दशक पहले का वह क़स्बा जो लेखक के जीवन का हिस्सा था, उसकी स्मृति का हिस्सा होकर एक दूसरा क़स्बा हो जाता है और रचना में उतरते वक़्त वृहत्तर भारतीय समाज में हो रहे आर्थिक, सामाजिक, सांस्कृतिक और राजनीतिक बदलावों का आईना बन जाता है।
यह कहना ग़लत नहीं होगा कि ऐसी रचनाएँ किसी भाषा में कभी-कभार ही सम्भव हो पाती हैं।
