Three Men in A Boat, published in 1889, is a humorous account by English writer Jerome K. Jerome of a two-week boating holiday on the Thames from Kingston upon Thames to Oxford and back to Kingston. The book was initially intended to be a serious travel guide, with accounts of local history along the route, but the humorous elements took over to the point where the serious and somewhat sentimental passages seemed a distraction from the comic novel. One of the most praised things about Three Men in a Boat is how undated it appears to modern readers—the jokes have been praised as fresh and witty.

"कार्यालयीय हिंदी ’70 के दशक के बाद की नवउदारवादी नीतियों, वृहद् नव-पूँजीवाद और बदलते बाजारूपन ने हिंदी को कई तरह की ‘करणत्रयी’ का शिकार बना दिया। एक ओर हिंदी भूमंडलीकरण, वैश्‍वीकरण तथा बाजारीकरण की गिरफ्त में आई तो दूसरी तरफ सत्ता और स्वार्थ के खेल ने इसे अंग्रेजीकरण, अरबीकरण तथा फारसीकरण में जकड़ दिया। परिणाम हुआ—हिंदी में कई तरह की विकृतियाँ व विकार पैदा हो गए। इस नए डिजिटल युग में ये सारे संकट हिंदी के सामने गैर-जमानती वारंट की तरह खड़े हो गए। भूमंडलीकरण अर्थात् पश्‍च‌िमीकरण एवं औपनिवेशिक प्रभाव के चलते हिंदी में ढेरों खामियाँ पसर गईं। इसके वाक्य-विन्यास, मुहावरे, हिज्जे, अंदाज और आवाज ने हिंदी को भ्रष्‍ट बना दिया। कुल मिलाकर हिंदी का पारंपरिक अनुशासन टूट रहा है। मोबाइल फोन और फेसबुक आदि यांत्रिक संचार साधनों पर भेजे जाने वाले संदेशों ने हिंदी व्याकरण और वाक्य-संरचना आदि को फिलहाल छिन्न-भिन्न कर ही दिया है, कार्यालयों में भी हिंदी-प्रयोग के प्रति अन्यमनस्कता-उदासीनता देखी जा रही है। अतः इन सब समस्याओं को दृष्‍टि में रखते हुए विशिष्‍ट भाषा और शिल्प-शैली में लिखी गई इस पुस्तक में कार्यालयों में हिंदी प्रयोग एवं राजभाषा के उपयोग को विश्‍वस्त, समृद्ध तथा सुगम-सरल बनाया गया है। विश्‍वास है, हिंदी जगत् इससे लाभान्वित होगा। "

अपने समय के कुछ मूर्धन्य लेखकों, चित्रकारों और संगीतकारों के साथ बातचीत करने का अवसर मिलना हर तरह से सौभाग्य कहा जाएगा। ऐसी बातचीत में अकसर किसी व्यक्ति की जि‍न्‍दगी, दृष्टि, उलझनों और उत्सुकताओं के अनेक अनजाने पहलुओं से साक्षात् हो पाता है। इनमें से अधिकांश साक्षात्कार ‘आलोचना’ (त्रैमासिक) और ‘पूर्वग्रह’ में प्रकाशित हुए थे। उनका शुरू से ही आग्रह अनौपचारिक आलोचना को भी जगह देने का था और ये उसी का हिस्सा थे। तब जानबूझकर बातचीत का स्वाद बनाए रखने के लिए उसे लगभग जस का तस दे दिया जाता था। इतने बरसों बाद अब शायद इसलिए कहीं-कहीं अटपटापन लगे, पर उस समय के स्वाद का भी पता चले, इसलिए उस सामग्री में नोक-पलक सुधारने की कोशिश नहीं के बराबर की गई है। कई बार बातचीत मैंने अकेले नहीं की है। उसमें नामवर सिंह, विजयदेव नारायण साही, रमेशचन्द्र शाह, राहुल बारपुते, भगवत रावत, गीता कपूर, मंगलेश डबराल, उदय प्रकाश, सुदीप बनर्जी, सत्येन कुमार, ज्योत्स्ना मिलन, मदन सोनी, उदयन वाजपेयी भी शामिल थे। जो परिसंवाद शामिल किया गया है उसमें कुँवर नारायण, नेमिचन्द्र जैन, रघुवीर सहाय, कमलेश, जगदीश स्वामीनाथन, विजय मोहन सिंह भी शामिल थे। इन सभी के प्रति कृतज्ञता। उनकी शिरकत से कई बातचीतें अनेक दृष्टियों का समवाय भी बन पाई हैं। जिनसे बातचीत की गई थी उनमें से जैनेन्द्र कुमार, आचार्य हजारीप्रसाद द्विवेदी, शमशेर बहादुर सिंह, रघुवीर सहाय, निर्मल वर्मा, पण्डित कुमार गन्धर्व और चेस्लाव मीलोष अब इस संसार में नहीं हैं। पहली बातचीत 1976 की है और आखि़री 2006 की। अगर बातचीत को एक निजी विश्लेषण और आकलन मानें तो यह लगभग 30 वर्षों में फैला ऐसा दस्तावेज़ है जो उसे एकत्र करता है।—भूमिका से
