अपनी वैचारिक और रचनात्मक यात्रा के अलावा यहाँ निर्मल जी अपने बचपन, पारिवारिक पृष्ठभूमि, इतिहास के कुछ निर्णायक पलों—मसलन बँटवारा और गाँधी जी की हत्या—से जुड़ी अपनी निजी अनुभूतियों को भी शब्द देते हैं। धर्म, इतिहास, मार्क्सवाद, भाषा, अन्तरराष्ट्रीय साहित्य, भारतीय राजनीति, आपातकाल आदि विषयों पर उनके विचारों को जानना उद्घाटनकारी भी है और विचारोत्तेजक भी।
मिसाल के तौर पर हिन्दी-भाषी समाज के संकट पर विचार करते हुए वे कहते हैं कि किसी हिन्दी-भाषी व्यक्ति को अगर केरल की फ़िल्म समझ न आए, यह बात समझ में आती है लेकिन हिन्दी लेखकों या हिन्दी फ़िल्मकारों को समझने में आम जनता को मुश्किल पड़ती है, तो ये एक गहरे सांस्कृतिक संकट का संकेत है।
इसी तरह कई अन्य चीज़ों पर नए ढंग से सोचने के लिए इन साक्षात्कारों में अनेक मौलिक प्रस्थान बिन्दु मिलते हैं। साक्षात्कारों के अलावा इस जिल्द में उन पर बनी फ़िल्मों और विविध मीडिया कार्यक्रमों के दौरान की गई वार्ताओं के अंश भी सम्मिलित कर लिये गए हैं।
