रचनावली का यह पहला खंड—‘अन्तरंग’—उनके इसी ‘अपना आप’ पर केन्द्रित है। यह खंड लेखक के पेचीदा जीवन के बहिरंगी बहुरूपों को दिखाने के साथ–साथ अन्तरंग के गुह्य प्रदेशों के विचित्र रहस्य–लोक के गवाक्ष भी खोलता है। इसका पहला अंश अधूरा ‘आत्मकथ्य’ है। इसके बाद ‘चींटियों की पंक्तियाँ : ज़मीन से काग़ज़ों तक’, ‘देखो बच्चू!’ और मृत्यु से लगभग दो महीने पहले रजिन्दर पॉल द्वारा लिया गया एक ऐसा साक्षात्कार है, जो उनके उदास, असुरक्षित, अस्थिर एवं अकेले आरम्भिक जीवन की प्रामाणिक और दिलचस्प झाँकी प्रस्तुत करता है।
इस खंड के अन्त में 1950 से 1958 तक उनके द्वारा लिखी गई डायरी को रखा गया है। राकेश के अन्तर्विरोधी जटिल चरित्र एवं उनके साहित्य को सही परिदृश्य और उचित सन्दर्भ में समझने के लिए यह खंड महत्त्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभा सकता है।

In response to the rather partisan policies of Mughal emperors, a number of personalities came forward in different parts of Hindustan, to lead people in resisting the tyranny. Rajputs and Sikhs repaid their debt to Marathas by keeping the Mughals, post Aurangzeb, completely embroiled in Punjab and Rajputana, and indirectly paving the way for an almost unchallenged rise of the Marathas. The prolonged resistance witnessed the supreme sacrifices of numerous unsung heroes of medieval history. Through unmatched grit and determination, they succeeded in bringing down the mighty Empire to its knees, eventually leading to its demise.
