- Description: रेणु के ‘मैला आँचल’ का प्रकाशन अगस्त, 1954 में हुआ और इसके ठीक दस वर्ष पूर्व उनकी पहली कहानी ‘बट बाबा’ 27 अगस्त, 1944 के साप्ताहिक ‘विश्वमित्र’ में प्रकाशित हुई। 1944 ई. से 1972 ई. तक उन्होंने लगातार कहानियाँ लिखीं—प्रारम्भिक कहानियों—‘बट बाबा’, ‘पहलवान की ढोलक’, ‘पार्टी का भूत’ से लेकर अन्तिम कहानी ‘भित्तिचित्र की मयूरी’ तक एक ही कथा–शिल्पी रेणु का दर्शन होता है जो अपने कथा–विन्यास में एक–एक शब्द, छोटे–से–छोटे पात्र, परिवेश की मामूली बारीकियों, रंगों, गन्धों एवं ध्वनियों पर एक समान नज़र रखता है; किसी की उपेक्षा नहीं करता। नई कहानी के दौर में रेणु ने अपनी कहानियों द्वारा एक नई छाप छोड़ी। उनकी ‘रसप्रिया’, ‘लालपान की बेगम’ और ‘तीसरी क़सम’ अर्थात् ‘मारे गए गुलफ़ाम’ छठे दशक की हिन्दी कहानी की महत्त्वपूर्ण उपलब्धियाँ मानी जाती हैं। ‘तीसरी क़सम’ पर राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार से सम्मानित लोकप्रिय फ़िल्म का निर्माण हो चुका है। रेणु की ‘पंचलाइट’ कहानी पर एक टेलीफ़िल्म भी बन चुकी है। ‘रेणु रचनावली’ के पहले खंड में रेणु की सम्पूर्ण कहानियाँ पहली बार एक साथ, एक जगह प्रकाशित हो रही हैं। इन तमाम कहानियों से एक साथ गुज़रने के बाद पाठक यह सहज ही महसूस करेंगे कि रेणु ने एक कहानी की वस्तु या पात्र को परिवेश या नाम बदलकर दुहराया नहीं है। हर कहानी में रेणु का अपना मिज़ाज और रंग होते हुए भी वे एक–दूसरे से अलग हैं और उनके अपूर्व रचना–कौशल की परिचायक हैं।
