‘मेट्रोमैन’ के नाम से विख्यात ई. श्रीधरन असंभव को संभव बना देनेवाले मानवीय प्रयासों के शानदार पर्याय बन चुके हैं। पिछले छह दशकों में देश की यातायात प्रणाली का आधुनिकीकरण और विस्तार कर उसे वैश्विक मानदंडों के अनुरूप बनानेवाले प्रौद्योगिकीविद् के रूप में उनका कोई सानी नहीं है। केरल के पलक्कड़ जिले के एक सुदूर गाँव करुकपुथुर में जन्मे प्रतिभासंपन्न श्रीधरन की खासियत उनके द्वारा पूरी की गई विकास परियोजनाओं की संख्या और उनकी पहुँच ही नहीं रही है, बल्कि यह भी उनकी विशेषता रही है कि कैसे उन्होंने एक के बाद एक, हर अभियान में समय की कसौटी पर परखे और हमेशा से सँजोकर रखे गए शाश्वत मूल्यों की पुनः-पुनः पुष्टि की और खुद को भ्रष्टाचार से अछूता रखते हुए लोककल्याण के लक्ष्य के साथ पूरी पारदर्शिता से कार्य किया। देश में सबसे ज्यादा प्रतिभाशाली समझे जानेवाले आई.आई.टी. स्नातक या प्रशासनिक सेवकों वाला प्रभामंडल श्रीधरन के पास नहीं है। महज सिविल इंजीनियरिंग में एक आम डिग्रीवाले श्रीधरन की सफलता का राज अपने व्यक्तिगत और पेशेवर जीवन में नैतिक मूल्यों को लेकर दृढ प्रतिबद्धता है। इसी ने उन्हें अपने कार्यक्षेत्र में उच्चतम उपलब्धियों तक पहुँचाया। अथक परिश्रम, लगन, कार्यनिष्ठा, यानी सभी प्रकार के प्रबंधन गुणों का पर्याय हैं ई. श्रीधरन। इनसे प्रेरणा लेकर आज के युवा भी कर्तव्य-पथ पर अग्रसर हो सकें, इसी में इस पुस्तक के प्रकाशन की सफलता है।

The world of tribes in India is still undiscovered and it often appears mysterious to the common man. Their peculiar belief system, worship of myriad spirits, animals, plants, hills, rivers and mountains compound the mystery. Even today, their world view, lifestyle, ritual and value system remain beyond the grasp of the mainstream society. Tribes are often dismissed as just animists, without a philosophy. Scholars so far have been dwelling mostly on the anthropological aspects of the tribes. This book is the first systematic effort to deal with the tribes from the point of view of philosophy. The work goes beyond what appears about the tribes on the surface level, and delves into their world of cosmology, metaphysics, aesthetics, epistemology and eschatology, man-animal-nature relations, gods, spirits, body and soul. Though the book is a work of philosophy, it chooses to avoid dry and cumbersome _ philosophical process; but in the final analysis succeeds to bring forth the philosophy of the tribal community in a manner appealing even to the general readers. A large number of legends and folktales have been interpreted philosophically in order to give sensible meaning to them vis-a-vis Vedic philosophy and Christian philosophy; and it is therefore that the book promises to be an exotic journey into the world of the tribes.

आज़ादी के छह दशक बाद भी ग्रामीण विकास की जटिल चुनौतियाँ विश्व के विशालतम लोकतंत्र हमारे देश के लिए चिन्ता का विषय रही हैं। सुखद है कि इस दिशा में महात्मा गांधी राष्ट्रीय ग्रामीण रोज़गार गारंटी अधिनियम (मनरेगा) 2005 ने कम ही समय में अपनी प्रासंगिकता एवं दीर्घकालिक उपयोगिता प्रमाणित कर दी है। मनरेगा से बन रहे सामाजिक सुरक्षा के परिवेश ने करोड़ों ग्रामीण भारतीयों के जीवन में बड़े बदलाव की सम्भावना पैदा कर दी है। यह बदलाव मनरेगा के साथ अन्य महत्त्वपूर्ण योजनाओं एवं कार्यक्रमों के रचनात्मक एवं नवाचारी समावेश द्वारा बड़े स्तर पर लाना सम्भव हो रहा है। अब मनरेगा के तहत सुयोग्य श्रेणियों के व्यक्तिगत लाभुकों की ज़मीन में भी भूमि एवं जल संरक्षण एवं सिंचाई कूप जैसी अत्यन्त उपयोगी विभिन्न परिसम्पत्तियों के निर्माण के प्रावधान ने इन सम्भावनाओं को और गहन कर दिया है। मनरेगा ने पंचायती राज संस्थाओं के सुदृढ़ीकरण का भी एक महत्त्वपूर्ण ज़रिया दिया है क्योंकि लागत के हिसाब से 50 प्रतिशत कार्यों का कार्यान्वयन ग्राम पंचायतों द्वारा किया जा रहा है। मनरेगा के तहत ग्रामसभा को मिली विशिष्ट हैसियत ने हमारे विशाल लोकतंत्र में जन-जन की प्रत्यक्ष भागीदारी का अनूठा प्रयोग सम्भव बना दिया है। पारदर्शिता और सामाजिक अंकेक्षण हो या फिर शिकायत निवारण और ओम्बड्‌समैन प्रणाली, हर मामले में ठोस एवं नए के माध्यम से मनरेगा एक अद्‌भुत कार्यक्रम बन गया है। मनरेगा के क्रियान्वयन के अब तक के अनुभवों के आधार पर वर्ष 2013 में ग्रामीण विकास मंत्रालय ने नए दिशानिर्देश जारी किए हैं। मुझे प्रसन्नता है कि प्रस्तुत पुस्तक में उन दिशानिर्देशों को समाहित किया गया है। ग्रामीण भारत में बड़े बदलाव की वाहक इस योजना का लाभ हर वांछित तक पहुँचाने के लिए इसके प्रावधानों व कार्यप्रणाली के बारे में समुचित जानकारी आवश्यक है। —भूमिका से
