यह आम धारणा है कि सिनेमा मनोरंजन का साधन है। हम जैसे कुछ लोगों का मानना है कि सिनेमा न सिर्फ मनोरंजन का साधन है बल्कि एक ऐसा प्रभावशाली माध्यम है जो जनमत निर्माण में सक्षम है। पहली पंक्ति वालों के लिए सिनेमा का कथ्य या उसमें गढ़े गए चरित्रों की सामाजिक/सांस्कृतिक/आर्थिक/धार्मिक पृष्ठभूमि का कुछ विशेष अर्थ नहीं होता। सिनेमा में क्या और कैसे दिखाया गया है—जैसे प्रश्नों के प्रति यह बड़ा तबका उदासीन रहता है। वह उसमें मनोरंजन के तत्वों तक ही स्वयं को सीमित कर लेता है। भावनात्मकता के चरम पर अदा किए गए सम्वाद या हास्य उत्पत्ति के निमित्त रचे गए स्टीरियोटाइप्स को हाथों-हाथ लेता है और इसमें निहित स्वार्थों की अनदेखी कर देता है। वह सिनेमा और बाज़ार, सिनेमा और प्रभुवर्ग, सिनेमा और समाज के अंतर्सम्बंधों से नावाक़िफ़ होता है। उसे यह नहीं पता कि ‘चुलबुल पाण्डेय’ कैसे हिट हो जाते हैं। उसे नहीं पता कि ‘रावण’ कैसे फ्लॉप हो जाता है। उसे नहीं पता कि बड़े-बड़े धन्नासेठों के घर का नौकर भोजपुरी मिश्रित हास्यास्पद हिन्दी क्यों बोलता है। उसे नहीं पता कि हिन्दी फ़िल्मों में दलित नायकों का अकाल सा क्यों है। उसे तो यह भी नहीं पता कि फिल्मों में जो स्त्री होती है, वह सामान्य स्त्रियों से इतना भिन्न क्यों होती है और मुसलमान चरित्र टोपीबाज़ क्यों होता है। ‘हिन्दी सिनेमा में हाशिये का समाज’ में इन्हीं प्रश्नों और सामाजिक-धार्मिक तथा आर्थिक-राजनीतिक जटिलताओं को उद्घाटित करने वाले लेखों को संकलित किया गया है। पुस्तक में योगदान देने वाले सभी लेखक फिल्म विशेषज्ञ हैं और वे सिनेमा के अंतःपुर की कथाओं-व्यथाओं से परिचित हैं। पुस्तक पठनीय होने के साथ ही सिनेमा जगत के मनोविज्ञान को समझने में सहायक भी है।

रघुवीर सहाय (1929–90) का एक रूप आधुनिक मिज़ाज के प्रतिनिधि का है, दूसरा आधुनिकता के समीक्षक का। उनके रचना-जगत को इन दोनों रूपों में देखना और इन रूपों के बीच एक अँधेरा–सा छोड़ देना आसान भी है, उचित भी। आसान इस कारण है कि आधुनिक मिज़ाज और उसकी अभिव्यक्ति के पर्याय समझे जानेवाले लक्षण रघुवीर सहाय के जीवनवृत्त में उतनी ही सुविधा से पहचाने जा सकते हैं, जितनी सुविधा से हम इन पर्यायों की कठोर नैतिक जाँच रघुवीर सहाय के लेखन कविता और गद्य, दोनों में ढूँढ़ सकते हैं। उचित इसलिए है क्योंकि निरे तार्किक विश्लेषण और उसके आधार पर फ़ैसला ले लेने या सुना देने की प्रवृत्ति से सचेत होकर बचने की चिन्ता रघुवीर सहाय की रचनाओं में गहरे बैठी दिखाई देती है। विश्वास के साथ दुविधा और भय रघुवीर सहाय का प्रतिनिधि स्वभाव है। इसीलिए उन्हें आधुनिकता का प्रतिनिधि और समीक्षक, दोनों कहना सही है। सम्प्रभु राज्य और लोकतंत्र आधुनिकता की इन दो सबसे विराट संरचनाओं को रघुवीर सहाय ने प्रसार माध्यमों के ज़रिए ही सबसे ज़्यादा जाना। इन संरचनाओं के चरित्र और बल से आकार लेते हुए सामाजिक इतिहास में रघुवीर सहाय की अपनी हिस्सेदारी मुख्यत: पत्रकारिता के माध्यम से सम्पन्न हुई। ‘दिनमान’ साप्ताहिक को एक प्रसार–माध्यम से ज़्यादा संवाद–माध्यम बनाना निश्चय ही उनके पेशेवर जीवन का सबसे बड़ा संघर्ष था। रघुवीर सहाय के काव्य का एक बड़ा और महत्त्वपूर्ण हिस्सा इस संघर्ष की पृष्ठभूमि में समझे जाने पर ही खुलता है।

शिवराज सिंह चौहान — 5 अप्रैल, 1959 को मध्यमवर्गीय परिवार में जन्म श्री शिवराज सिंह चौहान अपनी सादगी, सहजता और कर्मठता के लिए राजनीति में अलग पहचान रखते हैं। उन्हें विरासत में राजनीति नहीं मिली। दर्शनशास्त्र में स्वर्ण पदक के साथ स्नातकोत्तर की शिक्षा पानेवाले शिवराज को आपातकाल का विरोध करने के कारण स्कूली जीवन में ही जेलयात्रा करनी पड़ी। अपने आरंभिक राजनीतिक काल में ही वे एक कुशल वक्ता के रूप में स्थापित हो गए थे। उनकी यह विशेषता उनके भाषणों में देखी जा सकती है। विद्यार्थी काल से सार्वजनिक जीवन में सक्रिय रहनेवाले शिवराज ने अखिल भारतीय विद्यार्थी परिषद से अपनी यात्रा आरंभ करते हुए भारतीय जनता युवा मोर्चा में प्रदेश व राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर नेतृत्व प्रदान किया। 1990 में पहली बार बुधनी विधानसभा से भारतीय जनता पार्टी से विधायक निर्वाचित हुए और अगले ही वर्ष विदिशा लोकसभा से उपचुनाव लड़कर सांसद चुने गए। उसके बाद 1996, 1998, 1999 व 2004 में लगातार सांसद निर्वाचित हुए। 2005 में पार्टी ने उन्हें मध्य प्रदेश के मुख्यमंत्री पद की जिम्मेदारी सौंपी। वे मध्यप्रदेश में सबसे लंबे समय तक मुख्यमंत्री रहनेवाले राजनीतिज्ञ हैं। शुरुआती राजनीतिक जीवन में पैदल यात्रा करने के कारण वे 'पाँव-पाँववाले भैया' कहलाए तो मुख्यमंत्री के रूप में जन कल्याणकारी कार्यक्रमों के चलते प्रदेश की जनता ने उन्हें अपना “मामा' मान लिया सांसद रहते हुए 2003 के विधानसभा चुनाव को छोड़कर कभी भी चुनावी पराजय का सामना नहीं करना पड़ा। मध्य प्रदेश विधानसभा में दिए गए अपने भाषणों में उन्होंने सदन की गरिमा और मर्यादा को हमेशा बनाए रखा। विरोधियों पर कटाक्ष और तर्कपूर्ण हमलों के साथ ही उनके प्रति आदरभाव में कभी कोई कमी नहीं आने दी। उन्होंने प्रदेश के विविध पहलूओं के अलावा समसामयिक विषयों पर अपने विचार प्रस्तुत किए, जिनमें विकास की उनकी दृष्टि व अवधारणा समाहित रहती है तो सामाजिक मुद्दों पर उनका दृष्टिकोण व सोच उजागर होती है।

Kasturba Gandhi (née Kapadia) was born on April 11, 1869, at Porbandar, Gujrat. She married Gandhiji at the tender age of thirteen.
