आचार्य शुक्ल कोरे साहित्य समालोचक नहीं थे। वे गम्भीर अर्थों में साहित्य के समालोचक थे, जहाँ साहित्य के अन्तर्गत जीवन की चिन्ता, समाज की चिन्ता और पूरी संस्कृति की चिन्ता रहती थी। यह हिन्दी आलोचना का सौभाग्य है कि उसकी प्रतिष्ठा एक ऐसे समालोचक द्वारा हुई जो शुद्ध साहित्यिक आलोचक नहीं था, सिर्फ़ अलंकार और रस की मीमांसा करनेवाला काव्य-विवेचक नहीं था, बल्कि साहित्य को व्यापक सामाजिक सन्दर्भों में देखनेवाला और साहित्य की सामाजिक सार्थकता की प्रतिष्ठा करनेवाला आलोचक था। आचार्य रामचन्द्र शुक्ल दुनिया के अनेक महान आलोचकों के समान ही भारत के पहले गम्भीर समालोचक दिखाई पड़ते हैं। आचार्य शुक्ल अपना चिन्तन साहित्य की सामाजिक सार्थकता और साहित्य में ‘लोक मंगल’ के व्यापक सन्दर्भ में करते हैं, तो स्वभावतः उनके व्यापक, विराट व्यक्तित्व की ओर हमारा ध्यान जाता है। उनके समग्र कृतित्व का संकलन हिन्दी साहित्य की परम्परा के सर्वश्रेष्ठ के पुनर्जीवन की तरह है।
आठ खंडों में प्रकाशित ‘रामचन्द्र शुक्ल रचनावली’ के पहले खंड में उनकी सर्वाधिक चर्चित और कालजयी कृति ‘हिन्दी साहित्य का इतिहास’ संकलित है। रचनावली के सम्पादक नामवर सिंह ने इसकी भूमिका में आचार्य शुक्ल की इस कृति के महत्त्व और उसकी विशेषताओं पर विस्तार से चर्चा की है।

- Description: आज से हज़ारों वर्ष पूर्व भी मनुष्य अपने घर के चारों ओर फूल, घास व कमल के तालाब आदि लगाता रहा होगा। बेबीलोन के ‘हैंगिंग गार्डन’ विश्व के सात आश्चर्यों में एक माने गए हैं। आज जब हम गृह वाटिका की बात करते हैं तो हमारे सामने उद्यान कला का एक दीर्घ इतिहास साकार हो उठता है। रूप योजना कैसी भी क्यों न रही हो, घर के भीतर, आसपास, रास्तों, दीवारों को, फूलों की झाड़ियों, लताओं, वृक्षों द्वारा सजाने की परम्परा बहुत पुरानी रही है। गुफाओं में रहनेवाले मानव ने जब घर बनाकर स्थिर जीवनचर्या शुरू की तो उसे सजाने-सँवारने का काम भी शुरू कर दिया। जीवन में जब स्थिरता आ जाती है तो मानव-मन कला-सौन्दर्य की ओर झुक जाता है। प्राचीन भारतीय उद्यानों में लतामंडप, पुष्पित लताओं, झाड़ियों वाली वीथियाँ, कुंज, सुगन्धित पुष्प व कमल फलों के जलाशयों का वर्णन मिलता है। वासन्ती लता, लवंग-लता, नवमल्लिका जैसी सुगन्धित लताओं एवं वृक्षों के झुरमुट से घिरी वीथियाँ एवं वाटिकाएँ, जहाँ गृहवासी अपने परिवार के सदस्यों के साथ आमोद-प्रमोद के क्षण व्यतीत करता था। मुग़लकालीन उद्यान सीढ़ीदार होते थे, साथ-साथ उनमें पानी की नहरें व फुहारें अवश्य होते थे। मध्य एशिया से सर्द एवं फलों से भरे प्रदेश से आए मुग़ल बादशाहों ने वहाँ की स्मृति को याद रखते हुए और भारत की गर्मी से बचने के लिए जल की योजना वाटिकाओं में ख़ूब बनाई। उद्यान की योजना का रूप, आकार चाहे अलग रहा हो परन्तु मूल में एक प्रवृत्ति ही काम करती रही—वह थी प्रकृति की सुन्दर आकर्षक विविध प्रकार की वनस्पतियों, पौधों, झाड़ियों, वृक्षों, लताओं को आकर्षक रूप में लगाना, उसे सँजोना और प्राकृतिक भूदृश्यों को अपनी कल्पना के पुट द्वारा अपने घर के भीतर प्रस्तुत करना। उद्यान कला के भी मूलभूत सिद्धान्त लगभग सभी जगहों पर एक जैसे ही होते हैं। इन्हें जानने व समझने के बाद पौधों की देखभाल का कार्य काफ़ी सरल हो जाता है। उद्यान कला एक वैज्ञानिक विषय है, परन्तु शौक़ के रूप में अपनाए जाने पर यह आनन्द व अनुभव का विषय बन जाता है।

- Description: अमीर खुसरो फरसी, अरबी, तुर्की, संस्कृत तथा हिंदी के विद्वान् थे। उनका मूल नाम अबुल हसन था। 'खुसरो' उनका उपनाम था, जो आगे चलकर इतना चर्चित हुआ कि लोग उनका असली नाम ही भूल गए |जलालुद्दीन खिलजी ने उनकी कविता से प्रसन्न होकर उन्हें 'अमीर' का खिताब दिया, तब से वे 'अमीर खुसरो' कहे जाने लगे । खुसरो ने दस वर्ष की उम्र में ही काव्य-रचना शुरू कर दी थी। उन्होंने दर्शन, धर्मशास्त्र, इतिहास, युद्धविद्या, व्याकरण, ज्योतिष, संगीत आदि का गहन अध्ययन किया। उनकी पुस्तक 'लैला मजनू' से पता चलता है कि उनकी एक पुत्री तथा तीन पुत्र थे। खुसरो में देशप्रेम कूट-कूटकर भरा था। उन्हें अपनी मातृभूति भारत पर बड़ा गर्व था। उन्होंने एक स्थान पर कहा है-'मैं हिंदुस्तान की तूती हूँ। अगर तुम वास्तव में मुझसे जानना चाहते हो तो हिंदवी में पूछो, मैं तुम्हें अनुपम बातें बता सकूँगा।' खुसरो ने कई लाख शेर लिखे । इनकी कृतियों की संख्या ९९ बताई जाती है, परंतु अभी तक ४५ कृतियों का ही पता चला है। अमीर खुसरो एक बहुत अच्छे गायक और संगीतशास्त्री भी थे। संगीत के वाद्य और गेय दोनों ही क्षेत्रों में इनका योगदान रहा है। कई भाषाओं के प्रकांड विद्वान् और आपसी सद्भाव के प्रतीक अमीर खुसरो के जीवन-प्रसंग और उनके रचनासंसार से परिचित करानेवाली अनुपम पुस्तक।
