Geet Gawai: Bhojpuri Folk Songs in Mauritius is a well-researched and documented scholarly work on the Bhojpuri Sanskar Geet as brought to the shores of Mauritius by the Girmitiyas from the Bhojpuri belts of India during the Indentured Labour Route Migration and handed down from generation to generation from Dadis and Nanis to the younger generation. The tradition bearers who have preserved this rich oral musical ensemble, which encapsulates a harmonious blending of the different aspects of the life cycle, rites of passage, and associated customs and traditions, are known as Geetharines. This book is an ode to the Geetharines for having safeguarded, promoted and preserved these precious songs over one and a half centuries against all odds and which establish a strong permanent dynamic bond between India and Mauritius, the Indian diaspora and the world at large, with its inscription at UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
