- Description: बहार का मौसम था। ख़ूबसूरत बाग़ से मेरा दोस्त गुले-लाला, रेहान, सुम्बुल, ज़मीरान जैसे तरह-तरह के फूलों से दामन भर रहा था। मैंने उससे कहा- ‘‘बाग़ के फूल हमेशा बाक़ी नहीं रहते और बहार का ज़माना वफ़ादार नहीं होता। जो चीज़ फ़ानी हो, वह दिल लगाने के क़ाबिल नहीं।’’ दोस्त ने पूछा- ‘‘फिर क्या तरीक़ा है?’’ मैंने कहा- ‘‘मैं लोगों की कुशादगी और सहूलत के लिए ‘गुलिस्ताँ’ की किताब लिख सकता हूँ। खि़ज़ा (पतझड़) की हवाओं को इसके पन्नों पर ग़ल्बा हासिल नहीं होगा और ज़माने की गर्दिश इसकी बहार को कभी पतझड़ में न बदल सकेगी। फूलों से भरी थाली तेरे किस काम आएगी? मेरे ‘गुलिस्ताँ’ से एक वरक़ (पन्ना) ले जा। फूल तो कुछ दिनों में मुरझा जाएंगे लेकिन यह ‘गुलिस्ताँ’ हमेशा तरो-ताज़ा रहेगी।’’ वादे के मुताबिक़ मैंने उसी दिन इस किताब के दो बाब (अध्याय) लिख दिये ताकि अच्छी ज़िंदगी बसर करने और बोलचाल के आदाब में लोगों के काम आ सके। हासिले-क़लाम यह कि अभी मौसमे-बहार बाक़ी ही था कि किताब ‘गुलिस्ताँ’ वक़्त पर पूरी हो गई।’’ - शेख़ सादी
