The cross cultural, inter-religious relationship which is at the heart of the novel is unusual and profoundly interesting.

- Description: ‘नेहरू और एडविना’ के चरित्रों को केन्द्र में रखकर लिखा गया यह ऐतिहासिक उपन्यास तथ्य और कल्पना के अद्भुत मेल से रचा गया है। जो घटित हुआ वह तो सत्य है ही, लेकिन जो घटित नहीं हुआ, वह भी इसलिए एक हद तक सच्चा है क्योंकि उसका घटित होना काफ़ी हद तक सम्भव था। फ़्रांसीसी पाठकों को ध्यान में रखकर लिखी गई यह प्रेम कहानी भारतीय जनमानस को भी उसी रूप में उद्वेलित करेगी, इसमें सन्देह नहीं। भारत के इतिहास में बीसवीं शताब्दी की सबसे महत्त्वपूर्ण घटना 1947 का राजनीतिक विभाजन है। यह उपन्यास, इस घटना के अभिकर्ता तमाम महत्त्वपूर्ण पात्रों के भीतर झाँककर इसके कारणों और प्रभावों की दास्तान कहने का प्रयास करता है, और इस तरह दृश्य के अदृश्य सूत्रों का उद्घाटन करता है। सार्वजनिक के भीतर जो कुछ निजी है, वही उसका अन्त:सूत्र भी है, और अपनी मर्मस्पर्शिता में कहीं अधिक प्रभावी भी। इन्हीं अन्त:सूत्रों को उनकी मार्मिक संवेदनीयता के साथ ग्रहण कर इस उपन्यास का कथात्मक ताना-बाना बुना गया है। घटनाएँ प्राय: जानी-सुनी हैं—एक अर्थ में पूर्व परिचित। यही स्थिति पात्रों की है—जाने-माने, साहसी, प्रतापी, योद्धाओं का एक पूरा संसार। पर इन सबने मिलकर जो इतिहास रचा उसमें कौन, कहाँ, कितना टूटा-जुड़ा, बना-बिगड़ा, वह घटनाओं का नहीं संवेदनाओं का इतिहास है । एक बिन्दु ऐसा होता है जो बाहर और भीतर के तनाव का सन्धि-स्थल रचता है, जहाँ अक्सर जो बहुत अन्तरंग है, निजी है उसके अतिक्रमण की अनन्त साधना से बहिरंग की रचना होती है । इसी बिन्दु को पकड़ने की कोशिश है इस उपन्यास में। समय के दो महत्त्वपूर्ण पात्रों की केन्द्रीयता से उठकर समय को फिर से रचने की उसकी घटनात्मकता में नहीं, मार्मिकता में।

- Description: साधारणतया भारतीय स्वतंत्रता संग्राम का कालखंड 1857 से 1947 तक माना जाता है, लेकिन विदेशी शासन का सबल प्रतिरोध इससे 332 वर्ष पहले सन् 1525 में ही प्रारंभ हो गया था, जब कर्नाटक के उलल्लाल नगर की रानी अब्बका चौटा, जो अग्निबाण चलानेवाली भारतवर्ष की अंतिम योद्धा थी, ने बढ़ते पुर्तगाली आधिपत्य को घुटने टेकने पर मजबूर कर दिया था। इस संग्रह में 1525 से 1947 अर्थात् लगभग सवा चार सौ वर्षों तक अनवरत प्रवहमान रहे विश्व के सर्वाधिक लंबे समय तक चले स्वतंत्रता संग्राम का वर्णन किया गया है। सबसे कम आयु में माँ भारती के लिए बलिदान होनेवाले ओडिशा के 12 वर्षीय बाजीराव राठउत के अमर बलिदान को पढ़कर भला कौन किशोर और युवा रोमांचित नहीं होगा! दुर्गा भाभी तमाम बंदिशों को धता बताते हुए किस चतुराई से भगत सिंह को अंग्रेजों की नाक के नीचे से लाहौर से कलकत्ता निकाल ले गईं, यह आज भी मिशन शक्ति की प्रेरणा है। तात्या टोपे की बिटिया मैना देवी ने जनरल आउट्रम के सामने झुकने की जगह जिंदा आग में जलना स्वीकार किया और अजीजन बाई ने यह दिखाया कि समाज का हर तबका चाहे वह तवायफ ही क्यों न हो, देश की आजादी के लिए मर-मिटने को तैयार रहता है। भारतवर्ष के ऐसे ही 75 वीरों और वीरांगनाओं का दाँतों तले उँगली दबाने सदृश अनछुआ वर्णन जो इन अनजाने क्रांतिवीरों के प्रति स्वाभाविक श्रद्धा और सम्मान सृजित करेगा ।

- Description: ख़तरे की चेतावनी के बिना ऊपर आकाश से पैराशूट के खुलने के साथ गिर रहे परमाणु बम को कुछ लोग मुँह बाए देख रहे थे। उन्होंने सोचा कि शायद जहाज़ अमेरिकी युद्धबन्दियों के लिए खाद्य-सामग्री गिरा रहे हैं। ये पंक्तियां उस पल के बारे में हैं जब अमेरिका का बोक्सकार नामक जहाज नागासाकी के ऊपर परमाणु बम गिरा रहा था। इस उपन्यास की लेखिका उस समय स्कूल में पढ़ती थीं और उस दिन सैकड़ों छात्रों और मजदूरों के साथ उस स्थान से कुछ ही दूरी पर श्रमदान में लगी हुई थीं। परमाणु-विस्फोट की भुक्तभोगी लेखिका के इस आत्मकथात्मक उपन्यास में नागासाकी पर गिराए गए परमाणु बम के फौरी तथा बाद के समय में सामने आए प्रभावों-अनुभवों का यथार्थ विवरण प्रस्तुत किया गया है। जहाँ आवश्यक था वहाँ उन्होंने सर्वेक्षण-रपटों और अन्य दस्तावेजों का प्रयोग भी इसमें किया है। मुख्यतः नौ अगस्त, 1945 की सुबह से लेकर उसके बाद की लगभग दो महीनों की अवधि के दौरान जापान के नागासाकी शहर और उसके आसपास के क्षेत्रों में हुए घटनाक्रम का यह वास्तविक लेखा-जोखा युद्ध के विरुद्ध एक चेतावनी है जो आज के समय, जब युद्ध के लिए एक अजीब सी व्याकुलता विश्व में देखी जा रही है, खास तौर पर प्रासंगिक है। इस उपन्यास को पढ़ना एक पीड़ादायी अनुभव है लेकिन इससे गुजरना भी जरूरी है।

- Description: ब्रिटिश उपनिवेश द्वारा भारत से बाहर ले जाए गए मज़दूरों को तत्कालीन कम्पनियाँ और उनके एजेंट दो नामों से पुकारते थे। दक्षिण भारत, बिहार और प. उत्तर प्रदेश के ग़ैर-आदिवासी मज़दूरों को 'कुली' और झारखंड के सदान और आदिवासियों को 'हिल कुली', 'धांगर' और 'कोल' कहा जाता था। ये और कोई नहीं ग्रेटर झारखंड की उरांव, मुंडा, संताल, खड़िया और सदान जातियाँ थीं। ब्रिटिश संसद और ब्रिटिश उपनिवेशों में मौजूद दस्तावेज़ों में झारखंड के आदिवासियों के आप्रवासन के ठोस प्रमाण उपलब्ध हैं। कालान्तर में मॉरीशस, गयाना, फ़िजी, सूरीनाम, टुबैगो सहित अन्य कैरीबियन तथा लैटिन अमेरिकी और अफ़्रीकी देशों में लगभग डेढ़ सदी पहले ले जाए गए ग़ैर-आदिवासी गिरमिटिया मज़दूरों ने बेशक लम्बे संघर्ष के बाद इन देशों को भोजपुरी बना दिया है और वहाँ के नीति-नियन्ताओं में शामिल हो गए हैं। लेकिन सवाल है कि वे हज़ारों झारखंडी जो सबसे पहले वहाँ पहुँचे थे, कहाँ चले गए? कैसे और कब वे गिरमिटिया कुलियों की नवनिर्मित भोजपुरी दुनिया से ग़ायब हो गए? ऐसा क्यों हुआ कि गिरमिटिया कुली ख़ुद तो आज़ादी पा गए लेकिन उनकी आज़ादी हिल कुलियों को चुपचाप गड़प कर गई। एक कुली की आज़ादी कैसे दूसरे कुली के ख़ात्मे का सबब बनी? क्या थोड़े आर्थिक संसाधन जुटते ही उनमें बहुसंख्यक धार्मिक और नस्ली वर्चस्व का विषधर दोबारा जाग गया और वहाँ उस अनजान धरती पर फिर से ब्राह्मण, क्षत्रिय, भूमिहार और वैश्य पैदा हो गए? सो भी इतनी समझदारी के साथ कि 'शूद्र' को नई सामाजिक संरचना में जन्मने ही नहीं दिया? इस उपन्यास का मूल प्रश्न यही है। कोन्ता और कुन्ती की इस कहानी को कहने के पीछे लेखक का उद्देश्य पूरब और पश्चिम दोनों के ग़ैर-आदिवासी समाजों में मौजूद नस्ली और ब्राह्मणवादी चरित्र को उजागर करना है जिसे विकसित सभ्यताओं की बौद्धिक दार्शनिकता के ज़रिए अनदेखा किया जाता रहा है।
