He is young, virtuous, and loving but too orthodox to be the husband of a woman with Thethikutty's views. Feeling frustrated, Thethikutty leaves him once and forever and reaches her paternal home. Unni lives the life of a piety, is branded as an eccentric and dies. Thethikutty, meanwhile, finds no peace anywhere. At last, in the Himalayas, she meets her old friend and Unni's half-sister, the sixty-year-old Mrs K.M.K. Nair (Thankam). She finds her unborn son in Mrs. Nair's son and hands over her wedding pendant to her daughter with the request to cherish it with due regard.

- Description: पिछले तीन-चार दशकों में साम्प्रदायिकता का ज़हर तेजी से फैला है। परिणाम यह हुआ कि आज देश की राजनीति साम्प्रदायिक विचारधारा के इर्द-गिर्द संगठित हो गई है। साम्प्रदायिक हिंसा का तांडव देश को बेचैन बनाए हुए है। विभूति नारायण राय का चर्चित उपन्यास ‘शहर में कर्फ़्यू’ इसी विकराल समस्या से टकराता है। ‘शहर में कर्फ़्यू’ साम्प्रदायिक दंगे की चपेट में आए एक शहर के कर्फ़्यूग्रस्त मुहल्ले और ख़ासकर उससे पीड़ित एक परिवार की तीन दिनों की व्यथा-कथा है। यह कर्फ़्यू कुछ लोगों के लिए जीवन-मरण का सवाल है तो कुछ अन्य के लिए राजनीतिक नफ़ा-नुक़सान का खेल। दो जून की रोटी के लिए रोज़ चौदह घंटे खटनेवाले बीड़ी मज़दूर परिवार की बहू सईदा की बीमार बेटी की मौत इलाज के अभाव में हो जाती है। हर तरह से लाचार इस परिवार पर क्या क़हर टूटता है और उसे कैसे-कैसे दहशत भरे अनुभवों से गुजरना पड़ता है, लेखक ने इस सब का चित्रण अत्यन्त गहरी संवेदनशीलता के साथ किया है। अभावग्रस्त माँ सईदा अपनी मृत बेटी को याद करने की कोशिश करती है तो उसे ‘जो चीज़ याद आ रही थी वह भूख, धूल और बहती नाक का ऐसा मिला-जुला समिश्रण था जिससे फ़िल्मी माँ के वात्सल्य का कोई माहौल नहीं बन पा रहा था।’ कंट्रास्ट के द्वारा लेखक ने सईदा की नारकीय व्यथा को मर्मभेदी बना दिया है। उपन्यास में कई मार्मिक स्थल हैं। इनसानों के गली-मुहल्ले में दिन-दहाड़े एक बच्ची का बलात्कार ऐसा ही स्तब्ध करने वाला प्रसंग है। ऐसा पाशविक कृत्य किसी भी समाज का सबसे बड़ा कलंक है। ऐसे प्रसंगों की रचना में लेखक ने विलक्षण संवेदनशीलता के साथ वैचारिक सन्तुलन साधने में असाधारण दक्षता का परिचय दिया है। ‘शहर में कर्फ़्यू’ के माध्यम से लेखक ने समाज और राजनीति में लगातार सक्रिय साम्प्रदायिक विचारधारा के ख़तरों के प्रति जागरूक और सावधान किया है और उसे सिरे से ख़ारिज कर अपनी पक्षधरता की मुखर घोषणा भी की है। आकस्मिक नहीं कि कई दक्षिणपंथी संगठनों द्वारा इस उपन्यास की प्रतियाँ जलाई गई थीं। इससे प्रमाणित है कि उपन्यास ने सिर्फ़ वैचारिक उत्तेजना ही नहीं पैदा की है बल्कि सही जगह पर चोट भी की है। —कृष्ण कुमार सिंह

छाको एक धुरी है, जिस पर घूम रही है एक भरी-पूरी दुनिया। एक समूची क़ौम की ज़ेहनियत और ज़िन्दगी। बीच में जो विभाजन की रेखा दिखाई देती है, वह हिन्दुस्तान और पाकिस्तान के बीच से होती हुई दोनों देशों के शासकवर्ग और जनता के वर्ग-हितों की भी सुस्पष्ट पहचान कराती है, और अन्तत: मनुष्य के अस्तित्व के प्रश्न में बदल जाती है।
मिट्टी की गन्ध जिस तरह से पूरी कृति में समाई हुई है, उसके आगे देश-प्रेम की भारी-भरकम शब्दावली वाली कितनी ही परिभाषाएँ बेकार हैं। सरहदों और सीमाओं में बँधी नागरिकता का एक प्रति-विमर्श रचते हुए यह उपन्यास ज़िन्दगी और ज़मीन के कहीं गहरे, लगभग शाश्वत रिश्ते की ओर इशारा करता है। यही वह रिश्ता है जो आख़िरकार मानव-सभ्यता के विकास का बीज बनता है।
‘एक चूहे की मौत’ जैसे अत्यन्त लोकप्रिय उपन्यास के लेखक का यह उपन्यास नागरिकता और देश की मौजूदा बहसों के सन्दर्भ में और भी प्रासंगिक हो जाता है।

- Description: हिन्दी और बांग्ला में समान रूप से लोकप्रिय कथाकार विमल मित्र के उपन्यास राजाबदल में न कोई राजा है और न कोई राज्य; सिर्फ एक स्कूल है—बलरामपुर हाई स्कूल और उस स्कूल के संस्थापक हैं—गौर पंडित। एक बाप जिस तरह अपने बेटे के निर्माण में अपना सर्वस्व लगा देता है उसी तरह गौर पंडित अपने खून-पसीने से सींच-सींचकर स्कूल का यह बिरवा खड़ा करते हैं। इसके लिए उन्होंने भीख माँगी, पत्नी के जेवर बेचे और क्या-कुछ नहीं किया! लेकिन जैसे-जैसे स्कूल का विस्तार होता गया, गौर पंडित के अधिकार कम होते गए और एक दिन उन्हें स्कूल की कमिटी से हट जाना पड़ा। अपने जीवन के अन्तिम दिनों में उन्होंने हैरानी से देखा कि मालिक बदलने के साथ-साथ जैसे स्कूल का सब-कुछ बदल गया है, भला और बुरा सब-कुछ। और तब जैसे वे तड़प उठे; उन्हें लगा कि उनका मानस-पुत्र पतन के रास्ते पर जा रहा है। वे इस सारी स्थिति को सह नहीं सके और एक अनिर्वचनीय पीड़ा मन में लिये गाँव से विदा हो जाते हैं। चलते समय बार-बार एक प्रश्न उनके मन में उठता है : राजा बदलने के साथ क्या राज्य भी पूरी तरह बदल जाता है? क्या राज्य के लोग तक बदल जाते हैं? इतना ही नहीं, उनका भला-बुरा, शुभ-अशुभ सब कुछ बदल जाता है? गौर पंडित के इस प्रश्न में लेखक ने आज की एक महत्त्वपूर्ण सामाजिक-सांस्कृतिक समस्या को रूपायित किया है। सर्वथा रोचक और भावभीना उपन्यास।
