स्टीफन हॉकिंग—महेश शर्माहॉकिंग का सहायक उनकी व्हीलचेयर धकेलते हुए स्टेज पर लाया। आवाज का सिंथेसाइजर लाउडस्पीकर से जोड़ा गया। व्हीलचेयर के साथ एक प्रकार का कंप्यूटर लगाया गया है। उसके माध्यम से वे स्थिर बैठे हुए व्याख्यान देने लगते हैं। व्याख्यान शुरू होने पर वे अपनी पलकें हिलाते हैं-चेहरे पर मिश्रित हास्य। दो नर्स़ें उनकी देखभाल के लिए हैं। आवश्यकता पड़ने पर वे वहाँ आकर उनकी सहायता करती हैं। प्रार्थना की जाती है कि व्याख्यान के पश्चात् श्रोतागण प्रश्न एवं जिज्ञासाएँ पूछें। व्याख्यान के दौरान उनकी लार साफ करना, बाल पीछे करना आदि काम सहायक करते रहते हैं।व्याख्यान के दौरान कभी-कभी मजेदार प्रंग पैदा होते रहते हैं। एक बार फर्मोलैब में उनका व्याख्यान था। आमंत्रितों में एडवर्ड कोलबा नामक एक भीमकाय मजबूत आदमी भी था। हॉकिंग का व्याख्यान निचले तल के हॉल में था। वहाँ जाने के लिए लिफ्ट नहीं थी और न ही रैंप था। उसने आगे बढ़कर झट से हॉकिंग को सहज रूप से अपने दोनों हाथों पर उठाया और बिना किसी की परवाह किए उस हलके व्यक्ति को लेकर जल्दी-जल्दी चलने लगा।एक बार व्याख्यान के लिए वे देर से पहुँचे, क्योंकि निकट के हॉल में पॉप संगीत की महफिल जम रही थी और उसमें सम्मिलित होने का मोह वे रोक न सके।

तात्या टोपे भारत के प्रथम स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के एक अद्वितीय रणनीतिकार तथा कुशल सेनानायक थे। सन् 1857 के प्रथम स्वातंत्र्य समर में उनकी भूमिका सबसे महत्त्वपूर्ण, प्रेरणादायक और बेजोड़ थी। तात्या का जन्म महाराष्ट्र में नासिक के निकट पटौदा जिले के येवला गाँव में एक ब्राह्मण परिवार में हुआ था। उनके पिता पांडुरंग राव भट्ट थे। तात्या का वास्तविक नाम रामचंद्र पांडुरंग राव था। अपने आठ भाई-बहनों में तात्या सबसे बड़े थे। सन् 1857 के स्वातंत्र्य समर की शुरुआत 10 मई को मेरठ से हुई। जल्दी ही क्रांति की चिनगारी समूचे उत्तर भारत में फैल गई। उस रक्तरंजित और गौरवशाली इतिहास के मंच से झाँसी की रानी लक्ष्मीबाई, नाना साहेब पेशवा, राव साहब, बहादुरशाह जफर आदि के विदा हो जाने के करीब एक साल बाद तक तात्या संघर्ष की कमान सँभाले रहे और ब्रिटिश सेना को छकाते रहे। वे परिस्थिति को देखकर अपनी रणनीति तुरंत बदल लेते थे। अंतत: परोन के जंगल में तात्या टोपे के साथ विश्वासघात हुआ। नरवर का राजा मानसिंह अंग्रेजों से मिल गया और उसकी गद्दारी के कारण तात्या 8 अप्रैल, 1859 को सोते हुए पकड़ लिये गए। विद्रोह और अंग्रेजों के विरुद्ध युद्ध लड़ने के आरोप में 14 अप्रैल, 1859 को तात्या को फाँसी दे दी गई। कहते हैं, तात्या फाँसी के चबूतरे पर दृढ़ कदमों से ऊपर चढ़े और फाँसी के फंदे को पुष्प-हार की तरह स्वयं अपनी गरदन में डाल लिया। इस प्रकार तात्या मातृभूमि-हित निछावर हो गए।

देश की आजादी तथा दु:खी मानवता के उद्धार के लिए गांधीजी जीवन भर संघर्षरत रहे। उनकी यात्रा पोरबंदर से आरंभ होकर राजकोट, इंग्लैंड, डरबन, जोहांसबर्ग, अहमदाबाद और कलकत्ता आदि से गुजरती हुई दिल्ली में समाप्त हुई। वे अंत समय तक देश-निर्माण, सांप्रदायिक सौहार्द, एकता-अखंडता के लिए कार्य करते रहे। अहिंसा गांधीजी का अचूक अस्त्र था, जो एटम बम से भी ज्यादा ताकतवर था। अंग्रेज सरकार उनके सत्याग्रह और अहिंसा से बहुत खौफ खाती थी। उन्होंने खादी को घर-घर पहुँचाया और स्वदेशी को प्रोत्साहन दिया। स्वयं अछूतें के साथ रहकर उनके दु:ख-दर्द को महसूस किया और उन्हें बराबरी का दर्जा दिलाने के लिए संघर्ष किया। उन्हें अनेक बार जेल-यात्रा करनी पड़ी। सत्याग्रह की ताकत ने गांधीजी को महात्मा बनाया और इसके बल पर उन्होंने आजादी के समर में प्रत्येक देशवासी को एक सिपाही के रूप में बदल दिया। सत्यवादिता ने उनमें आत्मिक शक्ति भर दी थी कि उनके एक आह्वान पर लाखों लोग सिर कटाने को तैयार हो जाते थे। गांधीजी के बारे में जितना लिखा-पढ़ा जाए, कम है। कृतज्ञ राष्ट्र ने अपने प्यारे बापू को ‘राष्ट्रपिता’ के सम्मान से विभूषित किया। एक युगपुरुष और महान् व्यक्ति के अंतहीन कार्यों की ब्योरेवार जानकारी देती एक प्रेरणादायी पुस्तक।

In this book an attempt has been made to compare the two legendary writers by comparing the eastern way of thinking with the western way. Shakespeare is amongst the writers Sri Aurobindo holds in high esteem. Sri Aurobindo’s admiration for the great dramatist resulted in obvious Shakespearean influences on him. He adopts for his plays Elizabethan model of drama perfected by Shakespeare’s genius. Shakespeare’s influence is traceable also in Sri Aurobindo’s sonnets. It is said that Sri Aurobindo had Shakespearean literature on his bed-side when he left his mortal remains. Both the great writers were not satisfied by merely holding mirror to the nature but due to their greater and deeper life power, they recreated the human life in its beauty and completeness. Therefore, there is an obvious need to compare and contrast Shakeapeare and Sri Aurobindo so as to bring out affinities that may be there between their creative ideal and vision as well as their poetic and dramatic art, along with the former’s influence on the later. In this book an attempt has been made to fulfill the need and to contribute, in some measure to the appreciation of Sri Aurobindo’s poetry and plays. It also briefly touches upon Indian response to Shakespeare. It focuses mainly on Sri Aurobindo’s numerous insights and critical observations on him. To sum up writings of the two such outstanding writers, who represent two very different ways of thinking. On one hand Shakespeare potrays lot of blood shed, gory tales and a wild kind of poetic justice in his writings, but on the other hand Sri Aurobindo truely follows Indian ethos of non violence or ‘Ahimsa’. The author underlines the stark similarities and differences in both the writer’s exploring their plays and sonnets. The structure of plays and sonnets may be same of both the greatest minds but ethos and personna ingrained in their writings is quite different.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi 2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948) was an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist, and political ethicist, who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British Rule, and in turn inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. The honorific Mahātmā (Sanskrit: "great-souled", "venerable"), first applied to him in 1914 in South Africa, is now used throughout the world. Born and raised in a Hindu family in coastal Gujarat, western India, Gandhi trained in law at the Inner Temple, London, and was called to the bar at age 22 in June 1891. After two uncertain years in India, where he was unable to start a successful law practice, he moved to South Africa in 1893 to represent an Indian merchant in a lawsuit. He went on to stay for 21 years. It was in South Africa that Gandhi raised a family, and first employed nonviolent resistance in a campaign for civil rights. In 1915, aged 45, he returned to India. He set about organising peasants, farmers, and urban labourers to protest against excessive land-tax and discrimination. Assuming leadership of the Indian National Congress in 1921, Gandhi led nationwide campaigns for easing poverty, expanding women's rights, building religious and ethnic amity, ending untouchability, and above all for achieving Swaraj or self-rule. Gandhi's vision of an independent India based on religious pluralism was challenged in the early 1940s by a new Muslim nationalism which was demanding a separate Muslim homeland carved out of India. In August 1947, Britain granted independence, but the British Indian Empire was partitioned into two dominions, a Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan
