Shehryar was born on June 16, 1936, in Anwala, District Bareilly. He received his early education in Hardoi. In 1966, he joined the Department of Urdu at Aligarh Muslim University as a lecturer. In 1996, he retired as the Head of the Urdu Department. Shehryar published six collections of poetry. A book titled Haasil-e-Seer-e-Jahaan, comprising five of these collections, was published in 2004. In 2008, Shehryar’s complete works (Kulliyat) were published by Sang-e-Meel Publications in Pakistan, including all six of his poetry collections. Shehryar has been honoured by numerous literary institutions and organisations. Professor Shehryar's name holds great importance in modern Urdu poetry. Shehryar passed away on February 13, 2012, in Aligarh.
