- Description: यह आत्मकथा बिना आत्मदया या किसी क़िस्म की आत्मश्लाघा के हमारे सामाजिक यथार्थ को सामने लाती है। दलित लेखकों की परम्परागत कथा से अलग, यह ऐसा आत्म–वृत्तान्त है जो समाज के छोटे–छोटे अपराधों पर परवरिश पाते एक समूह का प्रतिनिधित्व करता है ‘‘मैं तब मराठी की पहली कक्षा में ही पढ़ रहा था। तब जिस किसी पुस्तक का पहला पृष्ठ खोलता उस पर लिखा होता, ‘भारत मेरा देश है। सारे भारतीय मेरे बन्धु हैं। मुझे इस देश की परम्परा का अभिमान है।’ मुझे लगता है कि अगर यह सब कुछ सही–सही है तो फिर हमें बिना अपराध के पीटा क्यों जाता है? माँ को पुलिस क्यों पीटती है? उसकी साड़ी खींचकर यह क्यों कहती है ‘चल साड़ी खोल के दिखा, तूने चोरी की है न!’ मुझे लगता है अगर भारत मेरा देश है, तो फिर हमारे साथ ऐसा बर्ताव क्यों किया जाता है? अगर सभी भारतीय भाई–भाई हैं, तो फिर हम जैसे भाइयों को काम क्यों नहीं दिया जाता? हमें खेती के लिए ज़मीन क्यों नहीं दी जाती? रहने के लिए हमें अच्छा मकान क्यों नहीं मिलता? अगर हम सब भाई हैं, तो मेरे भाइयों को, घर का खर्चा चलाने के लिए या पुलिस को रिश्वत देने के लिए, चोरी क्यों करनी पड़ती है?’ ऐसे कई प्रश्न हैं, जिन्हें यूँ ही ख़ारिज नहीं किया जा सकता। बिना किसी दुराव–छिपाव के लेखक सहजतापूर्वक बारी–बारी से कई सवालों से जूझता है। बेबाक और अहम साहित्यिक कृति होने के साथ–साथ यह एक महत्त्वपूर्ण व संग्रहणीय दस्तावेज़ है।
