बहुत छोटी-छोटी बातें होती हैं—रोटी, तवा, धुआँ, पट्टी, कोहरा या पानी की एक बूँद। लेकिन, उनके बड़ेपन की तरफ़ कोई हमें ले जाता है, तो हम अनायास ही एक ताल से ऊपर उठ जाते हैं, नितान्त निर्मल होते हुए। गुलज़ार की शायरी इसी निर्मलता की तलाश की एक शीश जान पड़ती है। वे बहुत मामूली चीज़ों में बहुत ख़ास तरह से अभिव्यक्त होते हैं। उदासी, ख़ुशी या मिलन-बिछोह अथवा बचपन...। लगभग सभी नितान्त निजी इन स्पर्शों को वे शब्दों के ज़रिए मन से मन में स्थानान्तरित करने की क्षमता रखते हैं।
एक विशेष प्रकार की सूमनियत के बावजूद ये विराग में जाकर अपना उत्कर्ष पाते हैं। इसलिए उदास भी होते हैं तो अगरबत्ती की तरह ताकि जलें तो भी एक ख़ुशबू दे सकें औरों के लिए।
गुलज़ार की यह सारी मौलिकता और अपनापन इसलिए भी और-और महत्त्वपूर्ण जान पड़ती है क्योंकि वे अपनी संवेदनशीलता और शब्द फ़िल्मों में लेकर आए हैं।
बेशुमार दौलत और शोहरत की व्यावसायिक चकाचौंध में जहाँ लोकप्रियता का अपना पैमाना है, वहाँ साहित्य की संवेदनात्मक, मार्मिक तथा मानव हृदय से जुड़े हर्ष-विषाद की जैसी काव्यात्मक अभिव्यक्ति गुलज़ार के हाथों हुई, वह अपने आप में एक अद्वितीयता का प्रतीक बन गई है।
