‘माई’, ‘हमारा शहर उस बरस’, ‘तिरोहित’, ‘वैराग्य’ एवं ‘ख़ाली जगह’ जैसी विविध व सशक्त कृतियों की मार्फ़त पिछले पन्द्रह सालों में एक विशिष्ट पहचान बनी है गीतांजलि श्री की हिन्दी कथा-जगत में। ‘अनुगूँज’ में संकलित इन दस कहानियों से ही शुरू हुआ था इस पहचान का सिलसिला। एक नई संवेदना जो विद्रोह और प्रतिरोध को उजागर करते वक़्त भी उनको कमज़ोर बनाती हताशा को अनदेखा नहीं करती, इशारों और बिम्बों के सहारे चित्रण करनेवाला शिल्प, और शिक्षित वर्ग की आधुनिक मानसिकता को दिखाती उनकी बोलचाल की भाषा, ऐसे तत्त्वों से बनती है गीतांजलि श्री की लेखकीय पहचान।

यूँ तो इन कहानियों का केन्द्र लगभग हर बार—एक ‘दरार’ को छोड़कर—बनता है शिक्षित मध्यवर्गीय नारियों से, पर इनमें वर्णित होते हैं हमारे आधुनिक नागरिक जीवन के विभिन्न पक्ष। जैसे वैवाहिक तथा विवाहेतर स्त्री-पुरुष सम्बन्ध, पारिवारिक परिस्थितियाँ, सामाजिक रूढ़ियाँ, हिन्दू-मुस्लिम समस्या, स्त्रियों की पारस्परिक मैत्री इत्यादि। यहाँ सीधा, सपाट कुछ भी नहीं है। हर स्थिति, हर सम्बन्ध, हर संघर्ष में व्याप्त रहते हैं परस्पर विरोधी स्वर। यही विरोधी स्वर रचते हैं हरेक कहानी का एक अलग राग।

निराला के कथा-साहित्य में दो परस्पर विरोधी प्रवृत्तियाँ देखी जाती हैं। एक प्रवृत्ति काल्पनिक इच्छापूर्ति के सपने रचने की है, दूसरी वास्तविक जीवन-संघर्ष को चित्रित करने की। ‘देवी’ और ‘चतुरी चमार’ में कहानी का पुराना ढाँचा टूट गया है। कथानक लेकर चलने वाली, समस्या के समाधान, नायक-नायिका के विवाह से समाप्त होनेवाली कहानियाँ ये नहीं हैं। इनमें परिवेश, पात्र ज्यों के त्यों उठाकर कहानी में रख दिये गए हैं। उनकी कहानियाँ कथा-रचना में यथार्थवादी साहित्य के विकास में नया चरण हैं। —रामविलास शर्मा

आगे सड़े हुए आलू प्रवेश करते हैं। वे सुबह से टोकरे में पड़े हैं, पर बिक नहीं पाए। उनसे पूछा गया कि अब तुम क्या करोगे तो बोले कि हम विद्रोह करेंगे। चाहे आधी रात तक टोकरे में पड़े रहें, बिकेंगे नहीं। हम भी आत्मसम्मान रखते हैं। देखने में वे कुछ बुद्धिजीवी मालूम पड़ रहे थे लेकिन एक सस्ते होटल वाला आया और उन्हें ख़रीद ले गया।

इनके अलावा भी इस किताब में कई पात्र और परिस्थितियाँ हैं जिन्हें परसाई जी की निर्मम लेखनी ने यहाँ संग्रहीत व्यंग्य-कथाओं में उनकी तमाम विडम्बनाओं और विकृतियों के साथ अंकित किया है।
