‘श्रीरामचरितमानस’ लीलान्वयी काव्य है। इनकी मान्यताएँ वाल्मीकि रामायण से न जुड़कर भागवत पुराण से जुड़ती हैं। वाल्मीकि अपनी ‘रामायण’ के ‘लंकाकांड’ में ‘रावण वध’ की समापन कथा कहते हैं, किन्तु तुलसीकृत मानस का ‘लंकाकांड’ रावण का मुक्ति का आख्यान है।
प्रभु के प्रति द्वेष भी भक्ति ही है और उस अमर्ष भाव में आकंठ डूबे रावण जैसे व्यक्तित्व के प्रति श्रीराम का क्रोध उनकी कृपा तथा अनुग्रह है। इसलिए तुलसीदासकृत लंकाकांड को कथा समापन के रूप में नहीं लेना चाहिए, वरन् मध्यकालीन लीलाभक्ति की उस अवधारणा से जोड़कर देखना चाहिए, जहाँ शत्रु-मित्र, साधु-असाधु, राक्षस-मानव के बीच स्थिर दीवार को तोड़कर सभी को एक मंच पर बैठाने की तत्परता दिखाई पड़ती है। हिन्दू-अहिन्दू को एक तार से जोड़नेवाली यह भक्ति निश्चित ही भारतीय संस्कृति की विषमता के युग में एक बहुत बड़ी सम्बल थी।
तुलसी अपने इस ‘लंकाकांड’ में ‘रावण वध’ की कथा न कहकर राम एवं रावण के बीच रागात्मक ऐक्य की स्थापना की कथा कहते हैं। रावण के भौतिक शरीर को विनष्ट करके उसकी तेजोमयी चेतना का श्रीराम के शरीर में विलयन भक्ति द्वारा स्थापित रागात्मक समन्वय का सबसे बड़ा साक्ष्य है।

As of now, the only book relevant to Magh Mela that is available in the market is a reproduction of the chapter on Magh Mahatmaya appearing in Padma Purana. But, that is purely mythological in content and does not deal with many aspects of the Magh Mela as it plays out in Allahabad. Everybody has heard of Kumbh Mela. But, how many of us have heard of Magh Mela? Does it surprise you to learn that Kumbh Mela is nothing but Magh Mela that is celebrated every twelfth year and Ardh Kumbh is nothing but the sixth Magh Mela celebrated between two Kumbh Melas? In other words, a mini version of the Kumbh Mela is celebrated in Allahabad year after year in the form of Magh Mela which goes almost unnoticed and unreported outside of Allahabad and Uttar Pradesh. Magh Mela is an incredible annual phenomenon in Allahabad (Prayag) from time immemorial. It is a monthlong Hindu festival that is celebrated in the month of Magh at Sangam or the confluence of rivers Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical river Saraswati. Magh Mela is marked by (snan) ritual bathing and taking up temporary residence near Sangam in the month Magh and leading an austere life devoted to prayers and rituals (kalpavas) according to their vows. The month of Magh begins with Paush Purnima and ends with Magh Purnima. But, the Magh Mela begins on Makkar Sankranti or Paush Purnima (whichever is earlier) and ends with Maha Shivaratri because of administrative reasons. Lord Vishnu is the presiding deity of Allahabad as well as the month of Magh which is considered to be the most auspicious month for Hindus. Allahabad is also known as Tirthraj Prayag. In other words, Allahabad is the king of pilgrimage sites for Hindus. Separate chapters are devoted to the most auspicious months of the Hindu calendar in the Puranas in the form of Vaishak Mahatmaya, Kartik Mahatmaya and Magh Mahatmaya explaining the significance of each month. The most important ritual for Vaishak is charity (daan). Similarly, the main ritual for Kartik is offerings in the form of earthen lamps (deep daan); and, the main ritual for Magh is ritual bathing (snan). Therefore, Magh Mela is essentially a bathing festival coupled with kalpavas. And, Tirthraj Prayag is the sacred land that has been designated for Magh Mela by Hindu scriptures. That is the secret of Magh Mela.

- Description: कहते हैं धर्म वेदों में प्रतिपादित है। वेद साक्षात् परम नारायण है। वेद में जो अश्रद्धा रखते हैं, उनसे भगवान् बहुत दूर हैं। वेदों का अर्थ है—भिन्न-भिन्न कालों में भिन्न-भिन्न व्यक्तियों द्वारा आविष्कृत आध्यात्मिक सत्यों का संचित कोष। वास्तव में जीवन को सुंदर व साधक बनानेवाला प्रत्येक विचार ही मानो वेद है। मैक्स म्यूलर का तो यहाँ तक कहना था कि वेद मानव जाति के पुस्तकालय में प्राचीनतम ग्रंथ हैं। वेद संख्या में चार हैं—ऋग्वेद, यजुर्वेद, अथर्ववेद और सामवेद। वेद का शाब्दिक अर्थ है ‘ज्ञान’ या ‘जानना’। ये हमारे ऋषि-तपस्वियों की निष्कपट, निश्छल भावना की अभिव्यक्ति हैं। इनमें जीवन को सद्मार्ग पर प्रशस्त करने का आह्वान है। इतना ही नहीं, वेदों में आत्मा-परमात्मा, देवी-देवता, प्रकृति, गृहस्थ-जीवन, सृष्टि, लोक-परलोक के साथ-साथ नाचने-गाने आदि की बातें भी निहित हैं। इन सबका एक ही उद्देश्य है—मानव-कल्याण। एक ओर जहाँ वेदों में ईश-भक्ति और अध्यात्म की महिमा गाई गई है, वहीं दूसरी ओर कर्म को ही कल्याण का मार्ग कहा गया है। वेद हमारे अलौकिक ज्ञान की अनुपम धरोहर हैं। अत: इनके प्रति जन-सामान्य की जिज्ञासा होना स्वाभाविक है, इसलिए वेदों के गूढ़ ज्ञान को हमने कथारूप में पाठकों के समक्ष प्रस्तुत किया है। इन कथा-कहानियों के माध्यम से सुधी पाठक न केवल इन्हें पढ़-समझ सकते हैं, बल्कि पारंपरिक वैदिक ज्ञान को आत्मसात् कर लोक-परलोक भी सुधार सकते हैं।

इसीलिए श्रद्धाओं की जाँच करनी पड़ती है। विज्ञान के विकास का इतिहास ऐसी ही श्रद्धाओं की जाँच करने का इतिहास है। कोपर्निकस, गैलिलियो ने इन श्रद्धाओं को जाँचा, और जो पाया, उसे व्यक्त करने पर यातना भी सही। क्या समाज सुधार का इतिहास भी ऐसा ही नहीं है? इस पर गौर करें तो हम इस निष्कर्ष पर पहुँचते हैं कि श्रद्धा की जाँच करना और जिन्हें वह श्रद्धा सामाजिक जीवन के लिए अनिष्ट व अनुचित लगती है, उन्हें उन श्रद्धाओं के खिलाफ शांतिपूर्ण संघर्ष के लिए संगठित करने की आजादी आज की बड़ी जरूरत है।
अंधविश्वास उन्मूलन के बारे में सुधीजन एक सलाह और देते हैं कि असहमति जताओ लेकिन विरोध मत करो। लेकिन सामाजिक परिवर्तन के लिए असहमति तक सीमित रहना संभव नहीं है। उसके लिए सक्रिय आंदोलन की जरूरत होती है। सचेत संघर्ष की जरूरत होती है। इस पुस्तक में ऐसे ही संघर्षों का विवरण डॉ. नरेंद्र दाभोलकर ने अपने शब्दों में दिया है। ‘बोलता पत्थर’, ‘लंगर का चमत्कार’, ‘कमर अली दरवेश की पुकार’, ‘अनुराधा देवी की बंद मुट्ठी’ और अन्य ऐसी ही अंधविश्वास-पूर्ण गतिविधियों के विरुद्ध डॉ. नरेंद्र दाभोलकर और उनके संगठन के ये आंदोलन निस्संदेह पठनीय है।
