प्रभु के प्रति द्वेष भी भक्ति ही है और उस अमर्ष भाव में आकंठ डूबे रावण जैसे व्यक्तित्व के प्रति श्रीराम का क्रोध उनकी कृपा तथा अनुग्रह है। इसलिए तुलसीदासकृत लंकाकांड को कथा समापन के रूप में नहीं लेना चाहिए, वरन् मध्यकालीन लीलाभक्ति की उस अवधारणा से जोड़कर देखना चाहिए, जहाँ शत्रु-मित्र, साधु-असाधु, राक्षस-मानव के बीच स्थिर दीवार को तोड़कर सभी को एक मंच पर बैठाने की तत्परता दिखाई पड़ती है। हिन्दू-अहिन्दू को एक तार से जोड़नेवाली यह भक्ति निश्चित ही भारतीय संस्कृति की विषमता के युग में एक बहुत बड़ी सम्बल थी।
तुलसी अपने इस ‘लंकाकांड’ में ‘रावण वध’ की कथा न कहकर राम एवं रावण के बीच रागात्मक ऐक्य की स्थापना की कथा कहते हैं। रावण के भौतिक शरीर को विनष्ट करके उसकी तेजोमयी चेतना का श्रीराम के शरीर में विलयन भक्ति द्वारा स्थापित रागात्मक समन्वय का सबसे बड़ा साक्ष्य है।

लीला के विवेचन के बिना हिन्दी भक्ति-कविता की समीक्षा सम्भव नहीं है। लीला भक्तिरस का प्राण है। हिन्दी के आलोचकों ने लगभग आठ दशकों से हिन्दी वैष्णव भक्तिकाव्य की समीक्षा शुरू की है, किन्तु उनका ध्यान इस प्राणवान तत्त्व की ओर नहीं जा सका है। प्रायः अंग्रेज़ी साहित्य से सम्बन्ध सिद्धान्तों तथा प्रकृत लोक मान्यताओं के प्रकाश में भक्ति-कविता की अब तक जो समीक्षाएँ हुई हैं, उनसे इस विशाल साहित्य की मूल प्रकृति स्पष्ट नहीं हो सकी है। इसका मुख्य कारण यह है कि भक्तिकाव्य के अध्यात्म एवं लोक का द्वन्द्व केवल लीला एवं मात्र लीला के माध्यम से ही विवेचित होना सम्भव है। उसके मन्तव्य, अर्थ-रचना एवं भावद्वन्द्व को इस लीलाधर के अभाव में देखा जाना इस भारतीय कविता के साथ अन्याय है। भक्तिरस इसी लीलाधर्मिता की निष्पत्ति है। आचार्य पं. रामचन्द्र शुक्ल जैसे भक्ति-कविता के प्रख्यात समीक्षक भी भक्तिकाव्य की इस मूल अवधारणा से अपनी दृष्टि बचाकर दूसरी ओर जाते दिखाई पड़ते हैं।
प्रस्तुत कृति का मूल मन्तव्य लीला तथा भक्तिरस के इसी सारवान तत्त्व की सैद्धान्तिकता की स्थापना करना है ताकि इसके प्रकाश में हिन्दी भक्तिकाव्य की पुनर्व्याख्या करके उसके साहित्य की ही नहीं, भारतीय संस्कृति और अस्मिता के साथ न्याय किया जा सके।

- Description: रामचरितमानस एक चरित-काव्य है जिसमें राम का सम्पूर्ण जीवन वर्णित हुआ है। इसमें चरित और काव्य दोनों के गुण समान रूप से मिलते हैं। इस काव्य के चरितनायक कवि के आराध्य भी हैं इसलिए यह ‘चरित और ‘काव्य'होने के साथ-साथ कवि की भक्ति का प्रतीक भी है। रचना के इन तीनों रूपों में नीचे उसका संक्षिप्त विवेचन किया जा रहा है। ‘चरित’ की दृष्टि से यह रचना पर्याप्त सफल हुई है। इसमें राम के जीवन की समस्त घटनाएँ आवश्यक विस्तार के साथ एक सुसम्बद्ध रूप में कही गई हैं। रावण के पूर्वभव तथा राम के पूर्वाकार की कथाओं से लेकर राम के राज्य-वर्णन तक कवि ने कोई भी प्रासंगिक कथा रचना में नहीं आने दी है। इस सम्बन्ध में यदि वाल्मीकीय तथा अन्य अधिकतर राम कथा ग्रन्थों से रामचरितमानस की तुलना की जाए तो तुलसीदास की विशेषता प्रमाणित होगी। काव्य की दृष्टि से रामचरितमानस एक अति उत्कृष्ट महाकाव्य है। भारतीय साहित्य-शास्त्र में ‘महाकाव्य’ के जितने लक्षण दिए गए हैं वे इसमें पूर्ण रूप से पाए जाते हैं। तुलसीदास की ‘भक्ति’ की अभिव्यक्ति भी इसमें अत्यन्त विशद रूप में हुई है। अपने आराध्य के सम्बन्ध में उन्होंने रामचरितमानस और विनय-पत्रिका में अनेक बार कहा है कि उनके राम का चरित्र ही ऐसा है कि जो एक बार उसे सुन लेता है वह अनायास उनका भक्त हो जाता है। वास्तव में तुलसीदास ने अपने आराध्य के चरित्र की ऐसी ही कल्पना की है।

- Description: आरम्भिक काल में इस्लामी आन्दोलन समाज के कमज़ोर और पीड़ित व्यक्तियों की आकांक्षाओं को व्यक्त करता था। इसलिए यह जाँच–परख दिलचस्पी से ख़ाली नहीं होगी कि उसके आरम्भिक समर्थक कौन से लोग थे। अब्दुल–मुतअल–अस्सईदी नाम के एक मिस्री लेखक ने इस पर शोधकार्य किया है। वे कहते हैं कि नवस्थापित इस्लाम मूलत: युवकों का आन्दोलन था। जिन लोगों की उम्रें दर्ज मिलती हैं, उनमें एक बड़ा बहुमत हिजरत के समय 40 से कम उम्र का था। इन लोगों ने उससे कम–से–कम 8 या 10 साल पहले इस्लाम अपनाया था। पैग़म्बर मुहम्मद ने मक्का के अमीरों की जो तम्बीह की थी कि वे ज़ख़ीराबाज़ी न करें और अपनी दौलत पर न इठलाएँ, वह कुचले हुए लोगों, ग़ुलामों और यतीमों आदि को आकर्षक लगती थी। फिर भी उनके समर्थक सिर्फ़ इन्हीं वर्गों से नहीं आए। वे सभी ख़ाली हाथ लोग या ज़ोरदार क़बीलाई सम्बद्धताओं से वंचित तलछटिए लोग नहीं थे। वास्तव में उनमें से बहुत से लोग अग्रणी क़बीलों के थे। जिस तरह हमारे अपने वक़्त में सामाजिक और राजनीतिक प्रक्रियाओं के प्रति जागरूक मगर वंचित होने के अहसास से भरे मध्यवर्गीय बुद्धिजीवी सामाजिक रूपान्तरण में एक महत्त्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाते हैं, उसी तरह पैग़म्बर मुहम्मद के अनुयायियों ने भी निभाई। ये लोग भी मक्का के समाज के मध्यवर्ती स्तरों से ताल्लुक़ रखते थे जहाँ एक ख़ासी बड़ी सीमा तक शत्रुतापूर्ण वर्गीय सम्बन्ध पैदा हो चुके थे।

जब दिल्ली में मुग़ल सल्तनत अपने पतन की ओर अग्रसर थी और लाहौर पर पठान गवर्नर अब्दुल समद ख़ाँ का सिक्का चलता था, उसने मस्सा रंघड़ द्वारा 'हरि मन्दिर' साहिब की पवित्रता भंग करा दी थी और अमृतसर में सिंहों (सिक्खों) का रहना निषिद्ध घोषित कर दिया था। उसी मस्सा रंघड़ के अंजाम को दर्शाता, सिंहों की वीरता व गुरुभक्ति का प्रदर्शन कराता, सत्य के लिए प्राणों की आहुति देने को तैयार रहने की भावना को प्रकाशित करता कथानक है इस उपन्यास का।
सिक्खों की वीरता, अपनी भूमि से प्यार और उस पर अपनी जान न्योछावर करने का साहस इस कथा के शब्द-शब्द से झाँकता दिखाई देता है। उपन्यास की भाषा इतनी कसी और सधी हुई है कि एक बार शुरू करने के बाद आप इसे पूरा पढ़े बिना नहीं छोड़ सकते।
