- Description: Wanderlust and the desire to know the land and society more had been fueling my wish to visit Kailas. There were many curiosities. All our major rivers have their source in the region. The largest reservoir of fresh water on earth is situated there. The celestial swans are found there. I recall that how in my childhood, my Grandmother used to describe Kailas as being akin to a dreamland. According to her, Shri Krishna has said in the Gita – Meruru shikhirinamaham – ‘Among mountains I am Kailas!’ It was Sage Mandhata who first set foot on this sacred soil. Adi Shankaracharya shed his mortal body here. Guru Nanak meditated here and Swaminarayana, the founder of the sect that bears his name, saw the vision of god here. The Ramayana and the Mahabharata mention Kailas. This is where Ravana had worshipped Lord Shiva. He wanted to take Kailas with him. Shiva guilefully dissuaded him from doing so. Arjuna performed penance here and received the Pashupata Astra from Shiva. Yudhishthir proceeded heavenwards via this route. One by one, all the family members fell by the roadside; only the faithful dog kept company. Bhasmasur, the Rakshas, a devotee of Shiva was reduced to cinders here. Today the dark shadow of civilisation has begun to fall even on Mansarovar. This lake is shrinking. The sacred water body, that once stretched across 410 square kilometres, is now shrunk to only 10 square kilometres. Consider this the rage of Nature. Had Kalidasa been alive, he would have been deeply saddened to see his beloved Himalaya in this state. Is it the same Himalaya that is described in Raghuvamsham and Kumar Sambhavam? Civilisation has reached a point where the divine dimensions of Himalaya are disturbed.

- Description: आरम्भिक काल में इस्लामी आन्दोलन समाज के कमज़ोर और पीड़ित व्यक्तियों की आकांक्षाओं को व्यक्त करता था। इसलिए यह जाँच–परख दिलचस्पी से ख़ाली नहीं होगी कि उसके आरम्भिक समर्थक कौन से लोग थे। अब्दुल–मुतअल–अस्सईदी नाम के एक मिस्री लेखक ने इस पर शोधकार्य किया है। वे कहते हैं कि नवस्थापित इस्लाम मूलत: युवकों का आन्दोलन था। जिन लोगों की उम्रें दर्ज मिलती हैं, उनमें एक बड़ा बहुमत हिजरत के समय 40 से कम उम्र का था। इन लोगों ने उससे कम–से–कम 8 या 10 साल पहले इस्लाम अपनाया था। पैग़म्बर मुहम्मद ने मक्का के अमीरों की जो तम्बीह की थी कि वे ज़ख़ीराबाज़ी न करें और अपनी दौलत पर न इठलाएँ, वह कुचले हुए लोगों, ग़ुलामों और यतीमों आदि को आकर्षक लगती थी। फिर भी उनके समर्थक सिर्फ़ इन्हीं वर्गों से नहीं आए। वे सभी ख़ाली हाथ लोग या ज़ोरदार क़बीलाई सम्बद्धताओं से वंचित तलछटिए लोग नहीं थे। वास्तव में उनमें से बहुत से लोग अग्रणी क़बीलों के थे। जिस तरह हमारे अपने वक़्त में सामाजिक और राजनीतिक प्रक्रियाओं के प्रति जागरूक मगर वंचित होने के अहसास से भरे मध्यवर्गीय बुद्धिजीवी सामाजिक रूपान्तरण में एक महत्त्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाते हैं, उसी तरह पैग़म्बर मुहम्मद के अनुयायियों ने भी निभाई। ये लोग भी मक्का के समाज के मध्यवर्ती स्तरों से ताल्लुक़ रखते थे जहाँ एक ख़ासी बड़ी सीमा तक शत्रुतापूर्ण वर्गीय सम्बन्ध पैदा हो चुके थे।

भाषान्तर में व्याख्या का सूक्ष्म प्रकार अनिवार्य होता है और वही अनुवाद का वर्तमान और अतीत के मध्य संवाद बनाकर बहुत कुछ को परम्परा में जीवित तथा प्रगतिशील रखता है। अतः ग्रन्थ में अनुवाद के लिए उपयुक्त भाषा, पुरातन ध्वनि बहुलता और समसामयिक सजीवता के संरक्षण की दृष्टि से तत्सम, तद्भव एवं देशी शब्दों के समन्वित प्रयोग किए गए हैं। साथ ही, गम्भीर और बहुमुखी अर्थों को स्पष्ट करने के लिए क्रियापदों के अनुवाद, दुरूह पदों के अर्थनिर्वचन में धातुपाठ, निरुक्त की पद्धति एवं आधुनिक तथा तुलनात्मक व्याकरण के अनुसरण से सहायता ली गई है।
वेद आर्षकाव्य के निर्देशन के साथ-साथ अध्यात्मगवेषियों के मार्गदर्शक भी हैं। अतः ऋचाओं में संश्लिष्ट आधियाज्ञिक, आधिभौतिक, आधिदैविक और आध्यात्मिक अर्थों को उद्घाटित करने का प्रयास किया गया है। व्याख्याकारों में जहाँ विवाद की स्थिति है, वहाँ प्राचीन एवं नवीन दोनों ही मतों का विवेचन प्रस्तुत किया गया है। इस प्रकार काव्यात्मक पक्ष की प्रस्तुति, निगूढ़ अर्थ के आयामों का विश्लेषण और विवादित स्थलों का तुलनात्मक विवेचन इस ग्रन्थ के अनुवाद एवं व्याख्या की अभीप्सित विशेषताएँ हैं।
इस खंड में ‘ऋग्वेद’ के पहले मंडल (पूर्वार्द्ध) का व्याख्या सहित हिन्दी अनुवाद प्रस्तुत किया गया है।

Like almost every major religious text in India, the Gita cannot be accurately dated to its composition. However, it appears to have been composed later than the 'classical' Upanishads, with the possible exception of Maitri, and to have been a work of Buddhism post-dating the period. It is clear from materials dating from the fifth and second centuries BCE that the major teachings of both the Upanishads and early Buddhism were similar to those of the Gita, as was the dualistic teaching, commonly known as Samkhya, later defined in the Samakhya-karika Ishakrpa.
