अतीत कभी सम्पूर्ण रूप से व्यतीत नहीं होता। बहुआयामी समय के साथ वह भिन्न–भिन्न रूपों में प्रकट होता रहता है। इतिहास अतीत का उत्खनन करते हुए उसमें व्याप्त सभ्यता, संस्कृति, नैतिकता, अन्तर्विरोध, अन्त:संघर्ष, विचार एवं विमर्श आदि के सूत्रों को व्यापक सामाजिक हित में उद्घाटित करता है। कारण अनेक हैं किन्तु इस यथार्थ को स्वीकारना होगा कि भारतीय समाज का इतिहास लिखते समय ‘दलित समाज’ के साथ सम्यक् न्याय नहीं किया गया। भारतीय समाज की संरचना, सुव्यवस्था, सुरक्षा व समृद्धि में ‘दलित समाज’ का महत्त्वपूर्ण योगदान होते हुए भी उसकी ‘योजनापूर्ण उपेक्षा’ की गई। ‘भारतीय दलित आन्दोलन’ का इतिहास (चार खंड) इस उपेक्षा का रचनात्मक प्रतिकार एवं वृहत्तर भारतीय इतिहास में दलित समाज की भूमिका रेखांकित करने का ऐतिहासिक उपक्रम है।
